It was a tight competition but the Golden Flashes lost with a score 1:0, taking Second Place. The student body at Academy Street Elementary recently raised an astonishing $13,950.14 for the American Heart Association through the Kids Heart Challenge. The school’s top two fundraisers were third graders Troy

Collotta and Max Cardillo, who raised $2,384.92 and $1,754.81, respectively. As part of this challenge, Academy students also learned about heart health and worked on their jump rope skills during each physical education

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. The South Country Central School District is proud to announce that 11 Bellport High School fall and winter sports teams were designated as scholar-athlete teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for excelling in both their sports and in the classroom. The cheerleading team received the designation for both the fall and winter seasons.

To receive scholarathlete recognition, a varsity team’s average GPA for 75% of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90%. Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Robert McIntyre said, “These studentathletes and teams work very hard throughout the school year and deserve to be recognized for their academic success.” The following varsity

Canoe And Kayak Storage Rack Program Just In Time For The Summer Season Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office joined with representatives from the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 at Blydenburgh County Park to announce the launch of the “Suffolk County Canoe and Kayak Storage Rack Pilot Program”. Together, they unveiled the first of six storage racks for canoes and kayaks which will be located at various parks and beaches across the county beginning Memorial Day. This initiative, spearheaded by Majority Leader Legislator Berland, will allow residents to rent a space to lock their kayak or canoe for the entire season, making it easier and more convenient for them to enjoy the water in our county parks and beaches. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting. The material and labor used to construct the racks were generously donated. The material by the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and the labor by Laborers Local 66. The program allows residents to purchase a seasonal sticker to place on their canoe or kayak. They will then be assigned a specific storage rack location and are responsible for providing their own device(s) to secure the canoe or kayak to the rack. The season will run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Storage racks will be located at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown, Southaven County Park in Brookhaven,

Lake Ronkonkoma County Park in Lake Ronkonkoma, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, Indian Island County Park in Riverhead and Smith Point County Park Marina in Shirley. Permits can be purchased in-person through the Suffolk County Parks Department at the West Sayville Administration Building (200 Montauk Highway, West Sayville). Those interested in reserving a space may download the form online at https:// w w w. s u f f o l k c o u n t y n y. gov/Departments/ Parks/Doing-Business/ Seasonal-Kayak-CanoeStorage-Rentals. For Suffolk County residents who are Green Key Card holders there is a $100 fee for a seasonal permit and a $250 fee for nonresidents. “We are so fortunate to live in a place where we have beautiful waterways, beaches and parks,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I sponsored this program to make it easier and more convenient for our residents to access and enjoy the water in our County parks and beaches. Thank you to the Suffolk Alliance of Chambers and Local Laborers 66 for their generous donations and help in getting this program up and running. I look forward to expanding the program to more county parks and beaches in the future. Sometimes his travel would keep him away from home for years at a time. “So this year for spring break we sent Mozart on traveling adventures with our students. We called it The Flat Mozart Project! In school, the Kindergarten and First grade classes showed Flat Mozart what a school looks like, because young Mozart never got the chance to go to one. Our Second through Fifth graders even created digital images of Flat Mozart traveling to places all around the world. The project continued over spring break as Flat Mozart went home with every child. Some families traveled and brought Flat Mozart with them, other families stayed home and showed him around town. Some even emailed him to a distant relative or friend and had them travel with Flat Mozart. Everyone who participated took pictures of their adventures and added them to the project.”

To replicate the journals young Mozart kept in the 1700s about the people he met and the sights he saw on his travels with his father, Mrs. Cirillo created a project webpage and twitter account for The Flat Mozart Project. The twitter feed is the Sayville Elementary Schools’ version of Flat Mozart’s travel journal. Sayville Elementary Schools Follow Flat Mozart on Adventures Story by Linda Mittiga Lincoln Avenue Music teacher Christine Cirillo orchestrated a new project for the music students in all three elementary schools. Borrowing the premise familiar to the students from “The Flat Stanley Project,” which follows the title character as he travels to different places and learns about different people and cultures, Mrs. Cirillo collaborated on “The Flat Mozart Project” with her Music colleagues Mrs. Amy Baron, and Mrs. Kristi Woerner for the Sayville elementary students. “Every class, Kindergarten through Fifth, in all three elementary schools,” Mrs. Cirillo explained, “did a composer study on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart just before spring break. Mozart began his musical career when he was five years old, the same age as our youngest students in Sayville Schools. Not only did we learn about his music, but we learned that Mozart spent the majority of his short life on the road
