Great Expectations “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What
does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies
frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Optimum Community recently recognized students at Bellport High School as the Suffolk County grand-prize winners in this year’s Charity Champions, a program that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice. The school was presented with $5,000 to be donated to HELP Suffolk, a 76-unit transitional housing facility for homeless families. New York State Senator Thomas Croci also participated in the event. The students selected HELP Suffolk because it is a local facility in which 11 Bellport High School students and their families reside. The money raised will be used to update the facility’s Student Center with new computers, sports equipment, craft supplies and DVDs. After opening remarks from Student Council Advisor Ellen Hoffman and Optimum Community moderator Shawna Ryan, Senator Croci recognized the students’ efforts and congratulated them on being the Suffolk County grandprize winner. A representative from HELP Suffolk also commended the students who were then presented with a $5,000 check. Garden of Learning Following the adage that daily consumption of fruits and vegetables is an integral part of leading a healthy lifestyle, students at Woodhull Elementary School recently started growing their own garden. Earlier in the year, Woodhull PTA member Melissa Adams raised the idea of having a school tower garden for use in PTA Lunchbox Parents activities and the initiative was implemented this spring for this purpose, as well as for use in the

school’s health and science education. Tower gardens use aeroponics to grow plants in a vertical configuration using only water, light and air. The growing time for tower gardens is less than the traditional amount of time for plants in soil. Each plant grows in its own “net pot” and the five-foot-tall tower can accommodate 27 individual plants at once. Woodhull’s tower literally sprung to life in a matter of days with a variety of leafy greens,
including kale, Swiss chard, arugula, celery, cilantro and basil budding. The tower is housed in the school cafeteria and students take part in the planting, growing, harvesting and, of course, eating of the items grown. With the help of school health services director Janet LaViolette, Karen McNulty’s Early Elementary class recently harvested the greens from the tower to make a delicious salad that everyone enjoyed.

Scouring the Shoreline
The local marine environment is cleaner and therefore healthier thanks to a recent cleanup of the shoreline along Havemeyer, Sexton and Captree Islands by volunteers from the Islip Town Leaseholders
Association. ITLA members often have ties to the area for several generations and participate in this cleanup of public shoreline as part of their year-round environmental stewardship of the islands.
The group worked from both land and boat to fill 40 large contractor bags with litter. Large debris was discarded in a dumpster provided by the New York State Parks Department, which has jurisdiction over the islands.

Community Ambulance Company of Sayville along side Brentwood Legion Ambulance and Exchange Ambulance joined United States Representative Lee Zeldin on the evening of May 14th in welcoming home World War II Veterans returning from an Honor Flight to
Washington, DC. These veterans were given the welcome home of waving flag and banners they never received when originally returning home from deployment. Long Island MacArthur Aport arrival area was filled with hundreds of patriotic members of the
community. The Veterans were welcomed by grateful civilians cheering and thanking them for their service. The honor flight is intended to honor many of these selfless veterans for their duty.
Who Made a Difference in my Life Close to 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the following Connetquot students were selected as the five winning entries: Hafeza Mim (Mrs. Debra Smith), Amber Hughes (Mrs. Pat Krawczyk), Emily Farrell (Mrs. Pat Nixon), Katie Kresic (Mrs. Cheryl Sosa) and Ryann Brennen (Mrs. Christine Carino). The Connetquot Teacher’s Association has been increasingly involved in community events such as providing financial support of both boys’ & girls’ local sports teams, collecting clothing & snacks for the needy, raising funds for cancer research, as well the financial awards for graduating Connetquot students. The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the
Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Mr. Felicio and CTA Vice President Mr. Chris Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families, for submitting quality essays. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot’s professional educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized. Mr. Felicio also thanked the following CTA members who helped organize the evening’s award ceremony: Chris Dolce, Joanna Zaleski, Christine Dassler, Cathleen DiPeri, Ellen Perz and Robert Bachisin. For the sixth consecutive year, Sayville Baseball held its Annual SUPPORT OUR TROOPS DAY in a brief ceremony honoring veterans, along with current servicemen and women, which preceded the home game on the baseball field (aka “The Swamp”). Admiring the qualities of character, honor, integrity, and loyalty demonstrated by active and former military personnel, like his father, Sayville Baseball Coach Ryan Cox began this tribute to honor the commitment they have shown, to say thank you for their great service and sacrifice, and to instill these values in his players.
This year’s ceremony began with the Color Guard from VWF Post 433, Rick Erdmann, Gary Gentile and Andy Henning, marching onto the field, while the invited veterans, Coach Ryan, assistant coaches Chris Clehane, Eric Cox, and Peter Blumenauer, and the Sayville Baseball team stood in respectful silence for the National Anthem on the third baseline. After, Sayville High School student Sean Barry played military themes on the bagpipes. As part of the timehonored tradition this year, special recognition was given to Mr. Paul Simonsen, student assistance counselor at
Sayville Middle School for the past 25 years. “We, as Americans, are grateful to our military personnel who are presently serving our country,” Physical Education Teacher Jen Wittman-Cahill read the prepared announcement broadcasted across the field as part of the Support Our Troops ceremony. “… And to our Veterans who have paved the way with their service.” This was followed by a history of Mr. Simonsen’s military background. After as part of the yearly tradition, retired Staff Sargent Simonsen threw the first pitch.

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was again invited to attend the May 12th Bagels and Books Breakfast at the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was invited by Ms. Andrea Ramos-Topper, EAC Regional Director, to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Children’s Center to provide a safe area for youngsters while their families are involved in court proceedings. For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, clothing, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center. On this latest visit, Felicio, and CTA member Mrs. Lisa Manzo, delivered a handcart filled with children’s books, along with jackets, coats, hats and gloves that the
center can distribute to visiting children. Felicio thanked the organization for the services and supplies they make available to the children, and their families. He also thanked the advisory board members, and fellow advocates, for allowing the Connetquot Teachers Association to be a part of this important effort. Felicio noted that the work done by the employees and the volunteers at the Children’s Center is vitally important to the youngsters that visit. The center also allows families to know their children are in a safe, nurturing, environment for the time that they need to take care of business while at the courts. The center is open five days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Tinamarie Bernocco. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,500 children. Since January alone, reflecting an increase in the number of children serviced, over
500 children, along with close to 450 families, have taken advantage of the Children’s Center. Connetquot teachers stopped by earlier this school year to provide additional hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes. Felicio thanked Mrs. Cheryl Zimmer, who is retiring as Supreme Court Advisory Board CoChair, for the years she has dedicated to the success of the Children’s Center, and welcomed the Honorable Judge Janine A. BarberaDalli who will be her successor. “As educators, we come to the profession because we love working with, and helping, youngsters. We do that every day within the school house,” said the CTA President. “To be able to have a positive effect on children outside of the classroom is very gratifying to us.” Felicio has assured the EAC of the Connetquot Teachers Association’s continued support.

Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Felicio and CTA committee members, welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the five winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500. “I would like to express how proud we are of our teachers for being chosen by former students as the teacher who has made a positive difference in their lives. Ride for Life began in 1997 as a way to highlight the struggle that ALS patients and their loved ones face every day. Each year in May, which is National ALS Awareness Month, those afflicted by ALS are joined by thousands of supporters as they ride across Long Island, bringing attention to the disease and raising funds for research that could one day lead to a cure.
