Additions to Makerspace Program the fundamentals of engineering and computer programming. Due to the interactive nature of the Ozobots, the computer clubs spent an entire meeting familiarizing themselves with them, and all seventh-grade math workshop students spent time in the library exploring and designing. Additionally, the OBMS Makerspace was recently able to collaborate and bring their innovative designs to life utilizing a 3-D printer on loan from

Eastern Suffolk BOCES. “At both district middle schools, the makerspace vision was able to be expanded upon,” said Mairead McInnes, the library media specialist at OBMS. “During our district librarians’ meetings, we were constantly talking about how we can coordinate our programs and what direction we would like to see the makerspace go, and with the help of the district we were able to expand our vision.”

Most people understand the importance of a clean environment, but the employees at Paramount Land, Inc. in Islip took this Earth Day concept and turned it into positive action. The company, which specializes in title insurance, teamed up with Keep Islip Clean for the national Earth Day events that are collectively known as the Great American Cleanup. Paramount Land employees are committed KIC volunteers who have cleaned up Main Street in Islip every year for a decade. This year, twelve staff members took the material provided by KIC, stepped out of the Main

Street office and donated their lunch hour on a beautiful May afternoon for a litter cleanup. The group filled eight bags with litter by the end of the project. “I’ve been with Paramount Land, Inc. for 10 years and participated in the KIC cleanup every year since the beginning, said Kelly Dunbar, Esq. She added that “one of the retailers on Main Street expressed appreciation for the cleanup and noted our commitment to the project. Although our company supports a number of charitable events, it’s particularly nice to get outside this time of year and see immediate results.”

Another Paramount Land employee, Jennifer Ludewig, noted that “we work for an amazing organization that allows us to not only do our jobs but encourages us to focus on volunteering and supporting the community in which we work.” A Main Street often lends character to a community, so this cleanup effected many Islip residents. “Paramount Land, Inc. is a good neighbor to the community. Our town is more attractive and the environment healthier thanks to their continued good work,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC.

As a supplement to their STEM-filled education, kindergartener through second-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School have been exploring the

world of science hands on. They have been analyzing the life cycles of lady bugs, hermit crabs and crawfish in their classrooms. As part of the crosscurricular study, the students observed the

live animals throughout the stages of their development and took note of their eating habits, sleep patterns and reactions to change in environment.

Throughout his career at Bayport-Blue Point High School, Philip was a member of the Science Olympiad team, and was deeply rooted in the music department – lending his musical talents as bassist in the jazz band and a cellist in both the chamber and pit orchestras. This fall, he will attend Stony Brook University, where he will be majoring in biomedical engineering within the school’s University Scholars Program. While at Stony Brook, Philip plans to seek out research

opportunities in the medical field and become involved in university jazz band, orchestra, and the university martial arts clubs. While at BayportBlue Point High School, Olivia was a member of the varsity tennis team and was an accomplished musician, garnishing AllState, All-National and AllEastern orchestra honors. She will attend Fordham University with a major in political science following a pre-law track. As part of her extracurricular studies at Fordham, Olivia plans to get involved in the university orchestra, Fordham College Republicans organization, and hopes to write for the Fordham Political Review. Samoset Does Broadway

From T-shirt production to a theatrical production, the students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) at Samoset Middle School and Islip Career Center (ICC) worked collaboratively to bring the production of Samoset Does Broadway to the big stage at the Samoset Middle School. Art Teacher Darlene Siracusano and Graphic Arts Teacher Cora WeuleSparwasser each received mini-grant funding to provide for the design and printing of T-shirts that would be used as costumes for the theatrical production. “The uniformed T-shirts would make the students look like a cohesive team with minimal need for costumes,” said Siracusano.

Designing and printing the T-shirts offered practical work experience to the Special Career Education students at ICC. Mini-grant recipients Music Teacher Philip Merkel, Speech Teacher Kim Leonard, and other classroom teachers completed the team effort for the big theatrical production. The students learned about the history of Broadway, about famous composers, they were taught basic choreography, and worked on narrations for each musical production. The production included songs from A Chorus Line, The Wiz, The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, and The Little Mermaid. The ensemble filled the stage for the finale song New York, New York.

This was a unique fine arts experience for the students and provided collaboration between a Special Education and Special Career Education program.

Learning About Local History Connnetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School fourthand fifth-grade students in Patrick Brennan’s and Tracy McIntyre’s classes recently learned a little bit more about their local history when retired Idle Hour teacher and Oakdale Historical Society member Rhoda McManus visited

the school. Mrs. McManus’ visit to the school served as an introduction to the fourthand fifth-grade students upcoming “A Quest for Knowledge: The History of Oakdale” activity, in which the students will be visiting several of the historical landmarks around town and answering a series of

questions. “It is my hope that with these experiences the children will come away with a sense of pride in their community; that they will then continue to preserve its history, and share these experiences with future generations,” said Mrs. McManus.

Gang Meeting

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined local school superintendents and Islip Public Safety officials to discuss the rise of gang activity nationwide, and how it affects all hamlets and school districts across Long Island. The Public Safety Department made a

presentation to those assembled, and highlighted the recruitment strategies of local gangs. Afterward, a discussion was held to identify ways that school districts can take steps to reduce and prevent gang influence among student populations. “Recent events demand a full response from all those

in a position to make a difference,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I hope today’s presentation and discussion lead to tangible solutions that can help those who are threatened by gang activity. School officials can be the ‘eyes and ears’ for law enforcement who are working to combat gang recruitment efforts.”

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III along with the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce once again sponsored their Holbrook Spring CleanUp. Despite the rain, this year garnered over 50 volunteers who picked up over 75 bags of litter and debris on a cold and wet spring day. The Chamber of Commerce first started this event with former

Presiding Officer Bill Lindsay and has continued this tradition; holding 8 community cleanups with current Legislator, Bill Lindsay. From boy scouts, girl scouts, students, athletes, and parents, the Holbrook community joined together with great enthusiasm and energy, to make their community a better place. “Turning out on a cold and wet day like we

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

For the past three years, Mr. Bonadonna has worked as the assistant director of pupil personnel services/ committee on special education chairperson for Garden City Public Schools. During his time in this position,

he was responsible for creating programs and assisting in the development of specially designed instruction and curriculum, and supervision of the development of postsecondary transition plans and procedures. Additionally, Mr. Bonadonna was instrumental in supervising the district’s classified student population across seven

school buildings spanning grades K-12. Prior to his position in Garden City, Mr. Bonadonna worked in a similar role in the Elmont Union Free School District, where his duties included supervising district special education programs and services, as well as attending all district CPSE meetings while managing all CPSE related tasks. In addition to being an accomplished administrator, Mr. Bonadonna is a seasoned school psychologist, having worked in the West Hempstead Union Free School District for over five years. There he conducted Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans alongside comprehensive report writing and IEP Development. Mr. Bonadonna holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a business minor from Hofstra University. He received both his master’s degree in school psychology and an advanced certificate of district leadership from Adelphi University.

Traveling with Flat Stanley Second-grade students at Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently interacted with students from different regions of New York State via video chat to discuss similarities and differences of their school and community as part of The Flat Stanley Project. Throughout the course of their discussions,

the Bayport-Blue Point second-graders were able to answer informative questions sent from the upstate students such as, “How many secondgrade classes does your school have?” and “Do any students have pets at home?” In addition, the students from upstate New York were happy to answer the questions that the Sylvan Avenue Elementary

students posed. According to the official Flat Stanley website, the basic principle of The Flat Stanley Project is to connect children, students or classrooms with other students or classrooms participating in the project by sending out “Flat” visitors created by the children through mail or digital resources.
