Kat’s Ribbon of Hope presented a grant of $100,000 to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program for their bilingual patient navigation program for underserved breast cancer patients. The grant will be used to support patients at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) and local hospitals through their diagnosis and treatment. The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s social workers address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Additionally, the program facilitates a Spanish language support group, Cafecito, in the community for breast cancer patients. “Our partnership with

the Adelphi program supports our goal to provide financial assistance to women who would otherwise not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer,” says Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the cofounder of KROH. Kat, who was diagnosed when she was 32, says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed in many ways with the support of her family and excellent medical care. She realized that there were many women who did not have such support and was determined to do what she could to help. She and her husband George Raptis and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. “The staff of Adelphi is

a big part of what we do,” says Despina. “Through their work they define what Kats Ribbon of Hope is all about.” Last year, KROH gave the Adelphi program a grant which allowed them to hire an additional patient navigator. “The generosity of Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is greatly increasing our ability to help underserved women,” says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support, education and advocacy for breast cancer patients and the community. This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Community Night Takes Flight

During a collaborative display of community, family and friends, Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District transformed its classrooms into a collection of informative activities for all to enjoy as part of its annual community night held on April 19th. The theme for this year’s community night was “The Air Around Us” and was the basis for each of the exciting activities taking place throughout the building. As part of the theme, students engaged in a number of lessons during classroom instruction that focused on a wide range of careers and concepts involving air. Serving as an exciting kickoff event, on April 18, students were treated to a unique presentation on hot air balloons given by Captain Lee Teitsworth

of the Liberty Balloon Company from Groveland, New York. Teitsworth performed a partial inflation demonstration from which students learned how a balloon reacts to wind. During the introduction to ballooning, students learned about the importance of weather, physics and aviation concepts that contribute to a balloon’s successful flight. On the night of the event, the school cafeteria was lined with booths represented by local vendors and community members who have careers associated with air. Students and their families visited booths led by BeeWitched Bee Local Honey and Bee Products, CPI Aerostructures, Patient AirLift Services, St. Charles Hospital CPR educators and a commercial airline pilot, among many others.

Around the building, students had the opportunity to fly a plane using a flight simulator with help from private pilot Brian Schulman, Skype with meteorologist Chris Bruin from The Weather Channel, learn how sound waves move through the air and view air-themed projects created by students on each grade level. The fun continued at multiple other stations where students spoke with scuba divers, learned about birds and bird feeders, crafted egg carton helicopters and constructed paper airplanes. In addition to the night’s festivities, the student chorus put on a perfect performance of air-themed songs, including “Defying Gravity” from the worldrenowned Broadway musical “Wicked.”

Seneca Middle School music students in the Sachem Central School District shared their performance experience with fifth-grade musicians from Grundy Avenue, Merrimac, Nokomis and Tamarac elementary schools during the annual moving-up music visit. The visit was an opportunity for elementary students to become better acclimated to the various experiences they will encounter while practicing

and performing on the middle school level. The fifth-grade students were able to ask the middle school musicians questions about their experience, including when they received their instruments, what extra music opportunities are available to them and how lessons are taught in a large group setting. Following the opportunity for questions, band and orchestra students separated into

their respective ensembles for a large group performance that joined middle and elementary school students together. The band performed “The Great Gate of Kiev” by Modest Mussorgsky and the orchestra performed “Dragon Slayer” by Rob Grice. Each Sachem middle school welcomes students from its feeder elementary schools for a similar music experience each year.

The eleventh graders in Lindsay Schultz’s U.S. History class at the STEM High School recently created an escape room as part of a creative project after studying the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. The escape room mysteries to be solved employed skills from multiple high school subjects. The STEM High School is

part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the career and technical education program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. To enter the escape room, students had to decode a word puzzle involving a quote from the Great Gatsby. Once inside, they had to utilize a physics reference sheet to perform a mathematical

calculation. Other challenges that followed led them to look inside the paper recycling bin in the room after reading, “Reform, Recovery and Relief” (part of FDR’s economic plan), which was hidden in a desk. A single piece of paper in the recycling bin contained a phone number. Participants dialed that number and the person who answered the phone talked about the stock market crash, providing the next clue. Students gradually worked their way around the room until they solved the last puzzle and found a key. Said, Justin Rosado, Connetquot CSD, “Creating an escape room for our classmates was a fun way to use everything we’ve learned in our classes, push ourselves to be smarter and to think up ways to challenge other people.”

Garden Dedication A special Memory Garden, located in a quiet shaded area on the grounds of Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center (PLC) in Oakdale, is dedicated to students who attended PLC. The garden provides a place for staff, family, and friends to visit to remember and honor the children who have passed away. Premm Learning Center is a center-based functional academic skills program for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The primary goal of the program is to maximize each student’s potential and to teach skills that will enable them to become as

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Family STEAM Night Sachem Central School District parents marveled at countless crafty creations made by students during Merrimac Elementary School’s inaugural Family STEAM Night on April 19th. The family event served as an opportunity for each grade level to showcase a specific classroom project that students participated in as part of STEAM instruction. First-graders created kites, secondgraders crafted musical

instruments, third-graders made recycled paper, fourth-graders constructed robots from recycled materials and fifth-grade students showed off their Ozobot Olympic course. Throughout the building, a number of exciting activities were taking place for families to enjoy. Sachem Aftershock robotics team towed a wagon with one of their past robots, the Sachem Public Library provided STEAM activities for

families to take part in and the art room was dedicated to design and construction challenges with Legos. In addition to the night’s festivities, the winner of the fifth-grade science fair was announced. Nicholas Prosa and his project that determined if hand dryers or paper towels are a healthier hand drying option will be moving on to the science fair at Brookhaven National Laboratory on May 5th.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter met with local Girl Scout Troop 3061 at Town Hall recently, to congratulate the young scouts on the success of their recent Bronze Award project. Through Girl Scout cookie sales alone, the Scouts, ranging from 10–12 years of age, raised a total of $824 to aid in the purchase of a new Freedom ADA Swing for

the Bohemia Recreation Center playground. The donation will cover more than half the cost of the new all-inclusive swing, which will enable children of all abilities, including those inhibited by traditional swings, the opportunity to enjoy the timeless playground activity in a safe and secure manner. In addition to raising funds for the new swing,

Troop 3061 now plans to beautify the entire playground, cleaning, planting flowers and painting artistic murals on park waste bins. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter accepted the Girl Scouts’ generous donation on behalf of the Town, and presented each Scout with a Town Certificate in recognition of their hard work and continued efforts.

Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older: Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told. Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud. Names and addresses might be more easily remembered after they’re repeated out loud because repetition increases the

likelihood that the brain will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. When studying for exams, many students repeat important points to themselves time and again, and that same approach can be applied by adults who are trying to improve their memories. Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster University in Ontario and the National University of Ireland in Galway, the study followed more than 27,000 people in 40 countries for an average of roughly five years. All participants were 55 and older and had diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Those who ate the healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than people with the least healthy diets. Break things down. Breaking things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single sentence at a time, only moving on to the next sentence when you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding sentence to memory. Periodic memory lapses are often nothing to worry about. But men and women concerned about maintaining their memories can employ various strategies to do just that.

Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difﬁculty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells. A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as near-sightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike in time

spent looking at things close-up and a lack of outdoor activities that require focusing elsewhere. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that a separate study recently found that excessive screen time usage in adolescents was associated with development of acute onset esotropia, or crossing of the eyes, and that limiting usage of gadgets decreased the degree of eye crossing in these patients. Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax. The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn’t too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue. Antireﬂective lenses on eyeglasses or ﬁlters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare. Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.

First Place Finish A team of five Sachem High School North students from the Sachem Central School District secured a first-place finish at the 20th annual Long Island Regional Envirothon environmental studies competition on April 25th. Seniors Chris Eagler, Emily Hudak and Molly Kearns teamed up with junior Emily Gelardi and sophomore Miranda Garcia-Cassani as they navigated the five subject areas of this year’s Envirothon. The

topics included the four recurring subjects of aquatics, forestry, soils and wildlife, and rangeland management served as the current issue for this year. During the competition, students cycled throughout the subject stations, where they answered a collection of multiple-choice questions that incorporated handson elements, including various equipment, maps and audiovisual devices. As part of the competition, students were given an environmental issue

for the focus of an oral presentation that is delivered to a panel of judges. Students underwent extensive preparation during their free time leading up to the detailed 10-minute presentation. As first-place winners, each team member received $500 and a local field guide and was awarded an all-expensespaid trip to compete at the New York State Envirothon in Geneva, New York, on May 23rd and 24th.

Fun with Science Students enrolled in Tina Feil’s fifth-grade class at Cherokee Street Elementary School recently engaged in a series of fun and educational science lessons with the help of former Connetquot Central School District science teacher Tom Seff.

During Mr. Seff’s visit, the students created thought-provoking puzzles utilizing both the alphabet and numerical values, and then shared their work amongst one another. Mr. Seff began his career as a science teacher in the Connetquot Central

School District in the late 1960s and served as an inspiration to thousands of students during his time teaching. Later in his career, he assumed the role of chairman of the district’s science department.

Alyssa’s project, titled “Will the fish be affected?” utilized a small fan in a fish tank to mimic wind turbines placed in local ecosystems to see if their usage negatively effects the sea life residing there. Brennan’s project, “Shhh…It’s a secret,”

tested different cleaning solutions, such as dish soap and laundry detergent to see which was the most effective at cleaning. Additionally, he created his own dish soap to further enhance the possible outcomes of his project.

Stop the Bleed The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high

Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding. “The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop. “Empowering Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed helps round out their capabilities if faced with serious bleeding, enabling them to provide assistance to save lives and limbs. This training should be required for Athletic Trainers in every school district on Long Island.” NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers are part of the Hospital’s Sport Medicine program and the Athletic

Trainers’ services include community outreach on acute care of injuries. “Although most injuries that occur in athletics are relatively minor, lifethreatening injuries are unpredictable and can occur without warning,” added Tony Marra, Athletic Trainer at Locust Valley High School. “Serious injury can occur during any physical activity – and at any level of participation. Now, following Stop the Bleed training by NYU Winthrop trauma experts, I’ll be equipped to provide lifesaving assistance during serious bleeding situations should they arise.” Stop the Bleed is a national program that encourages first responders and everyday citizens to become trained to assist in a bleeding emergency until professional medical aid arrives. The NYU Winthrop Trauma team has been training organizations and residents across Long Island, bringing the program’s lifesaving

techniques to firefighters, public safety officers, health professionals, universities, public entertainment venues and, more recently, high school staffs. Noted Steve Tozer, the Athletic Trainer at Syosset High School, “As a certified Athletic Trainer, I am called upon to assist students who suffer injuries during athletic competitions. Stop the Bleed training enables me to now provide immediate assistance to halt serious bleeding until emergency responders arrive. While I hope I never have to utilize the skills learned in Stop the Bleed, the training could one day prove to be the difference between life and death.” According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize

life-threatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing (filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth. Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure. Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions to install Stop the Bleed kits, which include tourniquets, alongside defibrillators in public venues and at schools. In an effort to both enhance and develop new linguistic skills, students enrolled in Donna Giambruno’s Italian classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently met with students in the Connetquot Central School District C-Quest program to give them a lesson on the language. During their visit, the middle schoolers engaged the C-Quest students in a series of activities designed to teach them several

Italian words, including how to say numbers, weather patterns, conversation etiquette, adjectives and the proper pronunciations of traditional Italian dishes. The younger students highly enjoyed themselves as they took part in these exercises, and were even granted the opportunity to put their skills to the test as they wrote down some of their favorite hobbies down on a worksheet utilizing the Italian words

they learned. With help from C-Quest advisers Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, the district’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth- and fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Frozen Faces and short informational essays filled with facts about the person they chose to portray. As the second-graders remained frozen in their poses, students throughout the building walked through the wax museum. Parents also visited and learned about the many significant people from history the students represented. The “wax” figures

included Susan B. Anthony, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, Barack Obama and George Washington, among many others. The annual wax museum aligns with the nonfiction genre studies element of the English language arts curriculum, in which students choose biographies of historical figures to research.

For the secondconsecutive year, several members of the Connetquot High School Anti-Bullying Club participated in the Town of Islip’s Anti-Bias Task Force in an effort to help cultivate a positive learning environment and community. In preparation for the program, the students were trained to assess bias concerns, make positive changes and influence character

development in their school and community. As a culminating activity, the students worked together on addressing prejudice, engaging in meaningful discussions on how to combat the issue. Connetquot High School Principal Kenneth Costa congratulated AntiBullying Club adviser Barbara MartorelliShapland and her students for their efforts to fight bias and for sharing their work

with members both the Connetquot community and other school districts.
