The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.
One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. The Bayport-Blue Point School District Board of Education celebrated a number of staff and student accomplishments during its May 7 meeting. To begin the night’s recognitions, BayportBlue Point High School freshman Matthew Allen was thanked by the board of education for raising enough funds to plant the large tree which now resides in the front courtyard of BayportBlue Point High School. Matthew and his fellow Boy Scouts dug the hole and planted the tree with assistance from Director of Facilities Dennis Martin. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School third grade teacher
Lori Mandracchia was acknowledged as the Teacher of the Month for the Month of April, and was met with words of praise from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy P. Hearney for her accomplishment. According to her colleagues, Mrs. Mandracchia is always invested in her students’ academic, social and behavioral growth throughout the year, reinforcing positive character traits and behaviors that model good citizenship along the way. James Wilson Young Middle School science teacher Erick Mueller was recognized as the Teacher of the Month for May
due to his enthusiasm he displays for his content and his engaging classroom presence. Additionally, he is credited for bringing fun and entertaining multisensory activities into his classroom to enhance student learning. After Dr. Hearney spoke kind words on behalf of Mr. Mueller, he recognized the 14 James Wilson Young Middle School students who took part in this year’s Science Olympiad Competition. Along with technology teacher Robert Donarummo, Mr. Mueller serves as co-adviser to the accomplished team, who were just one spot shy of making the top 40 teams at this year’s competition.

SLEEPING BEAUTY - Fourth grade students enrolled in Victoria Latino’s class at Academy Street Elementary School recently put on two stunning performances of the classic fairytale “Sleeping Beauty” for both their families and the entire student body. After spending weeks rehearsing their lines and coordinating their dance routines, the students brought the performance to life with dazzling costumes, beautiful set designs and impressive vocal performances throughout the play. South Country Top Athletes During its April 25 meeting, the South Country Central School District Board of Education and Central Administration honored the district’s top wrestlers, who received All-County designations. Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Robert McIntyre announced that Bellport High School student-athletes Wyatt Gentzel, Josh Leidig and Ka’Shaun Parrish received multiple designations that led the team to the League IV championship. Mr. McIntyre also noted that the team was awarded
the most improved team in Suffolk County, and the coaching staff received coach of the year honors. Wrestler Wyatt Gentzel finished the season with a 32-8 record. He won the Kujan Tournament, held at William Floyd High School; the Walt Whitman High School’s Peers Tournament; and at 99 pounds placed sixth in Suffolk County. Wyatt is the second wrestler in school history to place in the Suffolk County tournament as a freshman. Ka’Shaun Parrish, a sophomore who received All-County football honors
in addition to wrestling, finished the season with a 31-5 record. He was also a winner at the Kujan Tournament and placed fourth in the Suffolk County Championships at 170 pounds. Junior Josh Leidig finished the wrestling season with a 38-3 record. Josh won the Rick Herrmann Tournament and the Peers Tournament, and at 160 pounds placed third in the Suffolk County Championships. The district congratulates the athletes on these outstanding accomplishments.

The South Country Central School District is pleased to announce that seniors Tyler Brock and Aneeqa Majid have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the Class of 2019. Grace Armann was also named essayist. The district’s three top students were honored during a reception in the Bellport High School library on April 18, where they were congratulated by the board of education, central administration, faculty and parents. Principal Timothy Hogan called their being named valedictorian, salutatorian and essayist as a “remarkable achievement.” He said these students “serve as leaders of the building and as role models to other students.” As valedictorian, Tyler acquired an overall weighted GPA of 102.9919. Tyler is an advanced Placement Scholar with Honors. Prior to his senior year, he successfully completed nine honors and five Advanced
Placement classes and is currently enrolled in an additional six AP courses. Tyler will graduate with a Regents diploma with advanced designation and with honors and mastery in math and science. An outstanding athlete, Tyler has been a member of the varsity tennis team for four years, earning a first single position for the past three years of competition and the title of captain. He also ran cross-country for three years and was a member of the 2016 League Championship team. He is also a member of the National, Science and Math honor societies, Student Council, French Club and Students for Environmental Quality. Tyler also played roles in two high school musicals. His volunteer commitments include Safe Halloween, food drives, homework help at the South Country Public Library, math tutoring, Special Olympics and assisting with religious education. He plans on pursuing his interests in
either civil engineering or architecture this coming fall. Salutatorian Aneeqa Majid acquired an overall weighted GPA of 102.6667 and was designated by the College Board as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, having completed five honors and six AP courses prior to senior year and successfully challenging five AP courses this school year. Aneeqa will graduate with a Regents diploma with advanced designation and with mastery and honors in science. Born in Pakistan and fluent in Urdu, Aneeqa moved to the U.S. when she was 9 years old. Having to work hard in fourth grade to make an academic transition, she thrived prior to coming to Bellport High School in ninth grade, evidenced by her membership in the National, Math and Science honor societies. Last school year, Aneeqa was selected to participate in a summer engineering program at Stony Brook University and has been a
member of the math team and varsity tennis team. She writes for the school newspaper, The Clipper, and volunteers at the Brookhaven Public Library as a Junior Ambassador for Suffolk Literacy, where she recruits volunteers to help those who need assistance in learning to read. She also volunteers at Stony Brook Hospital and enjoys drawing and creating crafts. Aneeqa plans on attending Stony Brook University this fall where she will pursue a career in chemical and molecular engineering. Essayist Grace Armann acquired an overall weighted GPA of 102.3955 and was designated as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. Her musical accomplishments include Tri-M Music Honor Society, membership in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, concert mistress of both the pit and chamber orchestras and designation as an AllCounty musician in both the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association and Long Island String Festival Association. Her
STEM-related activities include being involved in Women in Science and Engineering at SBU for the past three years, as well as membership in Students for Environmental Quality, math team and Envirothon. In addition, Grace is a reporter for The Clipper, a tutor and a student assistant in the district’s summer music program. Her hobbies include photography, where she recently received an district art award, traveling, reading and music. Grace plans on pursuing a major in journalism and political science and eventually a career in print and broadcast journalism. The district looks forward to seeing where Tyler’s, Aneeqa’s and Grace’s futures lie and wish them the best as they continue to make Bellport High School proud.

A recent student-led service-learning project at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District helped raise money for an incredible cause, as students across grade levels rallied together to collect money for the Special Olympics. Fourth-grade student Gabriel Nagel developed a plan to raise money for the Special Olympics and brought his idea to Building Principal Veronica DeCicco to make
it a reality. Gabriel held a coin drive where students donated spare change, and he also organized a kickball tournament with various incentives for the winning team. Additionally, Gabriel reached out to the popular Long Island organization John’s Crazy Socks, which came to Merrimac to host an assembly program for students. Before the assembly, students learned about Down syndrome, what the Special Olympics are and
about the inspirational story of John’s Crazy Socks. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son team which was co-founded by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down syndrome. During the assembly, John shared information about the Special Olympics and how he never lets Down syndrome hold him back. To conclude the assembly, John answered questions prepared by the students and presented Gabriel with his own special socks.
Blow Bubbles For Autism Awareness As a culminating activity for National Autism Awareness Month, Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently hosted their inaugural “Bubbles for Autism” event, as hundreds of students and staff members from the school community gathered in the back of the school to support autism awareness. “As a sign of community
and respect for students, family members and friends living with autism, members of our community gathered on the field in the outline of a large heart and blew soap bubbles,” said Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Laura Kimball. Mrs. Kimball expressed her gratitude toward Nichole Johnson for coordinating the event, Joanna Zalewski and the

“Recycling Rangers” for donating the bubbles, along with Michael Oldis, Jusin Maas and Mike Johnson for their invaluable help throughout the course of the day.
