n celebration of Mother’s Day, third-grade students in Nicole Greco’s class at Academy Street Elementary School paid tribute to their mothers with a literacy celebration. The students created personalized poems and fun quizzes about their moms and a special coupon book for them to use at a later date. The third-graders proudly shared them aloud during a class Mother’s Day Tea celebration just before this year’s holiday.

After qualifying for Nationals at the Long Island and New York City Regional Competition, the Sayville History Club’s Inaugural Quiz Bowl Team, Sean Lorthioir, Michael Sugarman, Curran Boyce, and Jared Bergen were galvanized. Each week, they diligently prepared for the National Geography Challenge by researching past questions and practicing the different formats of the bowl. They were already making school history as being the first History Club team to compete in the National History Bowl competition,
scheduled this year in Arlington, VA for April 26th through28th. At the Nationals, the Sayville team competed against 1,200 other students from private and public school s representing all 50 states. History Club Advisors Mr. Michael Pace and Mrs. Sue Hart expressed their pride in the boys for taking on this endeavor with such vigor and enthusiasm. “The competition was fierce,” Mrs. Hart said, “and the team members held their own, advancing to the second round on Saturday evening. In addition, Sean Lorthioir
competed on Friday evening in the National Geography Challenge. After five hours of written and oral competition, he placed 50th! Truly a commendable feat being that this was his first time participating in such an event.” Both Mr. Pace and Mrs. Hart would like to thank and acknowledge the spectacular efforts by this Inaugural Quiz Bowl Team during the National History Bowl competition. Advisors and competitors are looking forward to building upon this success for next year.

Over $20,000 was raised for the American Heart Association by the Sayville School District’s Lincoln Avenue elementary school students in Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades - and they did it in ONE day! The fundraising event, generally known as Jump Rope For Heart, was “much more than doubledutch” this year, thanks to physical education teacher and program leader, Elizabeth Bolger. “This special event raises funds to support life-saving heart and stroke research and educational programs,” commented Beth Bolger, “and it provides a venue for authentic lessons in the circulatory system, exercise, and the dangers of smoking. I am so proud of our students!” Starting at 7:30 a.m., and with the assistance of twenty parent volunteers and twenty teachers, Lincoln students who participated this year maneuvered through eighteen challenging stations or activities. In addition to the traditional jump rope, students engaged in team-building/
cooperative games, climbed and swung from ropes, traversed miniobstacles, enjoyed spinning plates, and exercised other heart-healthy activities. “Certain students who raised more than $100 on-line,” added Lincoln Avenue Principal Dr. Michele Leblanc, “became eligible for the random draw to ‘pie’ a teacher! In a teacher’s absence, Mr. Votino, the parent of fifth grader Hailey, stepped up to the ‘plate.’” Punning aside, Dr. Leblanc also had high praise for the fundraising extravaganza - which put the fun in fundraising - as planned by Beth Bolger. “Coach Bolger provides a valuable service learning opportunity for our students, as well as a strong lesson in empathy. This event is highly successful each year because of her meticulous planning, energy and creative talents. I would like to thank the Sayville Community for their tremendous support of our children and this event.”

What Would You Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.
But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster. Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK COURSE – Bethpage, Over the Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany and won a “Best on Long Island” award. The Great Gatsby, Nassau County Museum of Art’s 2013 Museum Ball, celebrates the glamorous Gold Coast era immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. In the spirit of the Fitzgerald novel and the new Baz Luhrmann film, the Museum Ball through décor and the attire of Ball guests, will evoke that unforgettable era of fabulous parties and wealth on Long Island’s North Shore. The 2013 Ball, to be held on Saturday, June 8th at 7 p.m., returns to the grounds of museum’s own historic Gold Coast mansion, the former Frick Estate, Clayton. This elegant black tie evening of dining and dancing to the music of The Alex Donner Orchestra, along with a spectacular silent auction, is the museum’s major annual fundraiser. The Suffolk County Water Authority has been voted to have the best tasting water on Long Island by those who casted their ballots in the Long Island Water Conference’s 28th Annual Best-Tasting Water Contest. “I would like to congratulate the Suffolk County Water Authority on this much-deserved accomplishment of having Long Island’s besttasting water,” said Long Island Water Conference Chairman Mike Boufis. “This contest is an excellent way to celebrate drinking water week and further shares with Long Islanders how great our drinking water is. “ During the week of May 6th, the Long Island Water Conference invited residents of Long Island to Farmingdale State College where they were asked to participate in a blind taste-test of tap water from dozens of suppliers across the island. On Wednesday, May 7th the Suffolk County Water Authority was the recipient of the Best Tasting Water in Suffolk County award and on Thursday, May 8th the West Hempstead Water District was the recipient of the Best Tasting Water in Nassau County award. The final competition awarding the Suffolk County Water Authority as the Best Tasting Water on Long Island took place at the first-ever, cosponsored groundwater symposium on Friday, May 10th. The conference served as a culmination to the weeklong celebration of National Drinking Water Week and part of the ongoing effort to encourage residents to choose tap water because of its purity and great taste. The Long Island Water Conference is an association of more than 50 public water suppliers dedicated to providing a safe and reliable supply of
public drinking water for over 3 million people in the Nassau/Suffolk area. Its members maintain over 1,000 supply wells, 10,800 miles of water mains and nearly 79,000 fire hydrants across the Island, guarding against contamination and ensuring quality service for a region more populous than 20 states.

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared Fire Island open for business for the summer of 2013 season. He was joined by the Mayor of Ocean Beach, James Mallot, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, and members of “Revive FI”, the Fire Island grassroots business association, to provide updates on the state of Fire Island’s economic recovery for Summer 2013. Just over six months ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated the remote 32-mile-long barrier island leaving residents and businesses with the challenge of trying to restore normalcy before the summer months. The restoration effort was forced to begin immediately, as local businesses rely entirely upon tourism spending for its survival during a slim 12-week summer vacation season. This restoration effort included an unprecedented debris removal process coordinated across multiple municipalities, government agencies, and local community organizations. Fire Island is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and accessible only by boardwalk or ferry. It offers a private close-tohome paradise to New Yorkers looking for a beach getaway while also serving as a barrier beach to protect the south shore of Long Island. “We are proud to declare Fire Island ‘Open for Business!’ We want to thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, and all of the local towns, municipalities, and community groups that collaborated in an unprecedented fashion to complete a debris removal and rebuilding process that

Woodhull Elementary School fourth-grader Alden Sahi and fifthgrader Tess Lambie received high praise and an “Outstanding” rating – the highest a musician can receive – during this year’s NYSSMA solo festival. Alden, who performed an arrangement of Adagio in G Minor by the Baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli, received a perfect score for his Level 1 saxophone solo. Tess, who performed an arrangement of Minuet in G by Johann Sebastian Bach, received a
near-perfect score for her Level 1 clarinet solo. To prepare for the festival, both students began working on their solos during their weekly lessons with school music teacher Phillip Tamberino back in January. “These students did a great thing by just accepting a challenge and doing their best, but I’m glad they can walk away feeling good about it too,” he said. Each year, students across New York participate in the NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals

Sayville School Middle Librarian, Pam Rooney, recently received an Eastern Suffolk BOCES Model Schools Program Award for her work integrating technology into curriculum and instruction. As part of the awardwinning project, Ms. Rooney helped her students create “Book Trailers,” a concept similar to Movie Trailers. The students video taped themselves reviewing books they had read. Using a special educational account from YouTube for creating a QR (quick response) code, the students linked the video to the QR codes for all the different books that had been reviewed. To see the Book Trailers for the reviewed collection,
the students used an iPod touch that read the QR codes, allowing them to watch on their mobile devices the videos they had previously produced. The students were very enthusiastic about their technological integration, which through personalized peer recommendations, promoted reading. At the 2013 Celebration of Technology In Education, during which Ms. Rooney received her award, she had invited the students to accompany her and share their “Book Trailers” experiences with other districts. Held at the Dowling College, Brookhaven Campus Aircraft Hangar, the 13th Annual Celebration of Technology
in Education again showcased the best practices in technology, allowing teachers and students to network with the educational community and learn more about exciting innovations that launch “learning with technology.” “Congratulations to Pam Rooney for receiving this special award from Model Schools!” said Sayville’s Coordinator of Instructional Technology Barbara Hall. “She is truly a leader in her building, promoting meaningful and important experiences for our Middle School students, as she integrates instructional technology into curriculum and instruction.”

Scientific Study
As a complement to their classroom science lessons, Blue Point Elementary School kindergarten students had the chance to get an up-close look at the animals and insects they were studying when local professionals visited their classrooms. As part of their “swimmers and crawlers” unit of study, the students learned about different aquatic animals and
commonly found insects, including their body parts, life cycles and habitats. With help from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, the kindergartners were shown how to set up an aquarium and filled their classroom units with guppies, catfish, shrimp and snails. After creating a terrarium filled with beetles and pill bugs, they were educated on the
different components of insects, various stingers, and types of antennae and eyes when a representative from the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences came to the school. During a “builda-bug” workshop, the students helped to create a classroom bug. Using pipe cleaners and egg cartons, they also fashioned individual keepsake bugs.

Science Fair Winner For her project focused on students’ success on exams based on how they are administered, James Wilson Young Middle School sixth-grader Emily Phua captured a first-place win for her grade level at this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair. “I was very surprised when my name was announced,” said Emily. “It felt really good that all of my hard work paid off.” Employing the skills she had acquired in her school’s science research class, Emily completed the project over a six-week period, during which time
she created two math exams and administered them to 17 volunteers. Introducing variables into the experiment, Emily worked to determine if a person’s score improved or declined based on how they take the exam; that is, whether they complete it from start to finish in one sitting or whether they take short breaks. After graphing her results, Emily noted a 32 percent decline in her subjects’ scores when breaks were taken. Speaking to the benefits associated with students completing research projects, teacher
Kathy Brand explained, “Science research, and in fact science in general, teaches students how to reason. With the skills they acquire during this class, they begin to look at world problems with an eye toward the scientific process and always ask questions about why things occur.” This is the third time a Bayport-Blue Point student has won the BNL Science Fair in the past five years, which is how long the science research program has run at the middle school.

The Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society (BBHS) has announced its summer 2013 exhibition, Bellport: Summer, 1900, a celebration of the summer style and social life — complete with grand hotels, summer houses, and picket fences — enjoyed at the turn of the century in this village along the Great South Bay on Long Island’s south shore. The exhibition opens to the public Thursday, June 13th and remains on view Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday, August 31st, at the BBHS, 12 Bell Street, in Bellport. Admission is $5. A Gala Party will be held on June 8th and four lectures corresponding to the exhibition are scheduled over the month of June at the BBHS. Curated by designer and cultural historian Tricia Foley (http://www.triciafoley.com/) Bellport: Summer, 1900 presents a look at life in this seaside resort town at the turn of the last century through period photographs, paintings and objects from the BBHS collection depicting the village’s iconic summer style. The exhibition includes “Wish You Were Here!” -- a collection of photographs, including a scrapbook of images by local photographer Frances H. Toms -- that depict the bay, sailboats and white-shingled houses with wide porches that were popular subjects of the day. Also on view are photographs of the grand hotels – The Wyandotte, Hampton Hall, Bay House, The Goldthwaite — that attracted visitors from New York and Brooklyn. Families and guests made their way to “the cottages” every June to take up residence for “the season.” There were fairs and fetes, musicales and theatrical productions, croquet and cycling for Bellport’s seasonal society to enjoy. Sailing was Bellport’s great attraction, and launches lined up in the bay to carry visitors and residents to the
beaches for bathing, shell collecting and clamming. Picnic lunches were packed, salt-water taffy sold at the ferry, and the bay filled with white sails. But more than social and sporting life thrived in Bellport at this time. The suffrage movement was strong, and Bellport ladies hosted luncheons and teas to rally for votes for women. The Long Island Rail Road made its way to Bellport in 1882, and that enabled working people, some with their first paid vacations, to get away from the city’s heat and dust and relax; the Bay House was transformed into the Jewish Working Girls Society. Irish chambermaids spent the summer in service at the hotels, local boys caddied at the Golf Club and sailors were kept busy until September taking visitors for evening sails. The fashions of summer whites, bathing costumes and broad-brimmed straw hats depicted in photos and postcards from BBHS archives, allow viewers to imagine these summers of the past – and appreciate many of the same pleasures today. Tickets for the opening party on June 8th from 6 to 9 p.m. are $150 per person and include the Exhibition preview and the opening night Gala Party. Proceeds from this special event benefit the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society, a non-profit local organization with the mission of preserving the rich history, heritage and beauty of our Long Island communities. A variety of lectures are scheduled in conjunction with this exhibition. Each lecture will be held at the BellportBrookhaven Historical Society, 12 Bell Street in Bellport, NY. The Sayville Music program has so many talented students, many of whom have distinguished themselves with stellar performances. One such noteworthy instance involves Sayville High School Senior Kieran Harrison. Recently, Kieran Harrison won the “Music Lovers Scholarship” from the nonprofit group that promotes music on the island. It’s open to high school senior music
applicants from the Towns of Islip and Babylon. During the two days of preliminary rounds, Kieran auditioned and earned a spot as one of ten chosen for the finals. Kieran had to perform one more time before winning one of the four “Music Lovers Scholarship” that would be awarded. After, as a Scholarship Winner, Kieran performed in a special concert with his accompanist, Luiza Raab-Pontecorvo who is a professor of Horn at Hofstra, at which time he was awarded the scholarship money. In addition, Kieran was chosen as this year’s “outstanding soloist” by the Atlantic Wind Symphony. The band awards one student every year for which the “prize” is to play a full solo with the Atlantic Wind Symphony at their June concert!
Kieran will be playing the same piece he performed for the Music Lovers Scholarhsip concert, this time accompanied by the entire symphony. Next fall, Kieran will be attending college for music education at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He will be studying with the world famous sax performer, Dale Underwood,who awarded him a full tuition scholarship, based upon Kieran’s audition. Congratulations, Kieran!

Teddy Bear Clinic
Hearing about head injuries can be a frightening topic for children, but thanks to the Teddy Bear Clinic, the Kindergarten students at Cherry Avenue in Sayville learned the benefits of safety precautions. This program, which is sponsored by the Division of Trauma and Emergency Medicine at North Shore LIJ Southside Hospital, brings awareness about injury prevention in an age-appropriate manner. During her visit with the students, Southside Hospital Trauma Program Manager, Angela Scimone “opened” the Teddy Bear
Clinic to discuss rules for bike and pool safety, and proper child-restraint systems in vehicles. She impressed on the students that they can be proactive in knowing and practicing what is the correct method to keep their heads and bodies safe. “We talked about how and why we wear bicycle helmets,” Kindergarten teacher Kate Enea explained, “and we talked about never going near or around a pool without a grown-up. Then we worked on fixing our ‘patients.’” The children enjoyed bringing from home a special toy “patient” to
the clinic where they were instructed how to tend to specific injuries. The topic had the students thinking seriously about the best ways to prevent injuries. Kindergartener Abby Streek advised, “You should wear your helmet when you are biking,” as she tended to her toy monkey who “fell off the tree.” Classmate Sofia Congelosi explained, “I got to help Clifford who fell off his bike and I learned you should stay in your booster seat.” That’s using you head!
BUNNY NIGHT - Mr. Stu Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia joined PTA President Tina Garcia in welcoming students and parents for the March 27th Bunny Night! Families with very excited children attended the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) sponsored night of games, crafts and temporary tattoos, which would include snacks, an egg hunt and a visit with the Bunny! Thanks to all the parent-volunteers who supervised the races, fun games and craft tables.

On Tuesday, April 9th, members of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted a mentoring session for elementary students preparing a piece for the upcoming NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Students from the Sycamore, Bosti, John Pearl, and Idle Hour elementary schools practiced performing their scales, solos, and sight reading for OBMS Tri-M students. In addition to gaining more experience performing for a new
audience, the elementary students interacted with OBMS students, met the middle school music teachers, and had the opportunity to see where their music classes will be held at OBMS. According to Mrs. Johnson, “The experience was enjoyable and rewarding for all ages!” Each spring the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) sponsors festivals across the state in which students have the opportunity to perform solos and small ensembles for an impartial judge. They listen to
each student perform a graded selection from the NYSSMA manual, and a short sight reading. NYSSMA is the state professional organization for music educators. Mrs. Johnson thanked the Tri-M members for working with the elementary students, as well as OBMS music teachers Ms. Theresa Rowden and Mr. BentleyGarfinkel, for making the afternoon session so enjoyable and rewarding for all the talented youngsters.
TWO FOR TEA - In celebration of Mother’s Day, third-grade students in Nicole Greco’s class at Academy Street Elementary School paid tribute to their mothers with a literacy celebration. The students created personalized poems and fun quizzes about their moms and a special coupon book for them to use at a later date. After carefully revising and editing their descriptive poems, the third-graders proudly shared them aloud during a class Mother’s Day Tea celebration just before this year’s holiday. Celebrating Stars Of Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery, held on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $290,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. More than 250 community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long
Island. Guests arrived by red carpet entrance to the Hotel, and enjoyed a silent auction, dinner and dancing throughout the program. LICADD unveiled a video that highlighted its newest programs, as well as the personal stories of clients who found recovery in the agency’s programs and services.
