onnetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Concert Choir recently visited Philadelphia, PA, for a day-long workshop with popular conductor, composer and musician Dr. Matthew Glandorf, at the Curtis Institute of Music. The students received interactive tutorials and learned about skills that need to be honed in order to be successful professional performers. A great time was had by all in attendance.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. On Saturday, June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center. Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise

money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner. Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling

for Poker event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and

paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100.

This year, The Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40-foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m.

Counting Down The Days To The End

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a

graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can

give back a medal to a school that has given me so much. If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders. Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III recently presented Oakdale Civic President, Carol Schwasnick, with a proclamation honoring her as the 2014 Suffolk County Woman of Distinction for the 8th district. In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Suffolk County Legislature and the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission recognizes and acknowledges women in our society by honoring a Woman of Distinction every year in each legislative district. “Carol is an effective leader and advocate for all Suffolk County residents,” said Lindsay III. “Carol truly fights for the best interest of our community and brings a dynamic approach to civic engagement and community activism.”

In addition to being a Senior Director within the field of Corporate Real Estate, Carol joined the Oakdale Civic Association in 2007 with the intention to give back to her community and to advocate for all residents. New Bleachers Installed

Over a week after Support Our Troops Day was held at the baseball field, a.k.a. “The Swamp,” Sayville Baseball celebrated another achievement - stadium bleachers for Sayville Baseball spectators. Coach Cox’s original concept and design ideas for the field began years ago when the dugouts were first installed. Through his patience, perseverance, and a solid plan, along with the cooperation of the Sayville Board of Education, the Administration, and the tremendous support of the Baseball Booster Club, this field of dreams recently became a reality. Though a SponsorA-Seat Campaign, “we raised $60,000 over the course of two years to put

in bleachers.” Coach Cox explained. Donations by families, friends, alumni, and faculty sponsored seventy of the 146 seats in the stadium. “There were some seats sponsored in memory of Marie Joost-Cox and Steve Hintze,” Coach Cox added about district personnel whose legacies and commitment to the district should not be forgotten. Thanks to all involved, Sayville Baseball has a fitting stadium to welcome its spectators with seating behind home plate. On installation day, Sayville Little League and Lincoln Avenue Fourth grader Thomas Liguori ceremoniously threw the first pitch while his great grandmother, Elizabeth Steckle (Sayville Class

of 1940) watched in the stands.

CLEANUP A SUCCESS - Semiannually, the Holbrook Beautification Committee partners with the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce and most recently, Legislator Bill Lindsay III to clean-up Holbrook’s main roads and sidewalks. On May 3rd, over 150 local athletes, boy scouts, girl scouts, church groups, business owners, and residents came out to Seneca Middle School on a beautiful Saturday morning to give back to their community by participating in the Holbrook Clean-Up. Volunteers were able to collect more than 250 bags of litter and 400 recyclable bottles throughout Holbrook and Holtsville.

Successful athletes know that gearing up for a big event requires the right fuel. Often they participate in a Pasta Night the day before a big race or a playoff. Both the food and the camaraderie serve to boost each athlete’s body and spirit. Inspired by this practice, Cherry Avenue Third Grade Teacher Geraldine Batterberry in Sayville School District organized a combination “Pasta Night” and Matthew’s Giving Tree Fundraiser for the thirdand fifth-graders. While it was not for a physical race, but for a mental one, the idea was to help the students reduce any test anxiety for the upcoming ELAs.

“I thought it would be fun (and hopefully encouraging) for children to attack the test like a runner,” Mrs. Batterberry, a runner herself, explained. “Testing is just like a race. You need to pace yourself. You want to perform your best on race day, and like all runners….the only one you are really competing against is YOURSELF. Runners in a 5K aren’t racing each other….they are trying to score the personal best time in each race.” “The Common Core testing is not a race against other students or other districts.” Mrs. Batterberry continued. “We wanted the kids to go for their personal best.”

For a $2 donation to Matthew’s Giving Tree, approximately 100 Cherry Avenue student enjoyed the afterschool event in the fabulous Cherry Avenue restaurant (cafeteria). Especially after cooking twenty pounds of pasta, Mr. Batterberry was very appreciative of those Cherry Avenue staff members who donated boxes of pasta, jars of sauce, and stayed to serve. The outcome was a success! Not only were the students fueled and refreshed for their ELA tests the next day, but Pasta Night had raised about $350 for Matthew’s Giving Tree.

Sachem Teams Honored At the May 13th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislators Tom Muratore and Bill Lindsay III recognized three teams from both Sachem High Schools for winning their respective championships. Sachem East Varsity Boys Volleyball became the League Champions under the direction of Head Coach William Kropp and Coach Damon Gall. They beat Port Washington, 3-0 to win the Long Island Championship, defeated Lindenhurst 3-1 to win the Suffolk County title, and also eliminated their rival Sachem North in the Suffolk semifinals, 3-1. Additionally, the team became finalists in the New

York State Championship. Sachem East Varsity Girls Field Hockey, under the direction of Head Coach Tina Moon and Assistant Coach Genna Kovar, continued their victory streak by being named Conference Champions, Division I Champions, Suffolk County Champions, and Long Island Champions for the third year in a row. They also became finalists in the New York State Championship. The Sachem North Arrowettes, a dance kick line team, were the 2014 National Champions in the category of Small Varsity Jazz for the third consecutive year. “Once again, I am

pleased to join Legislator Lindsay in recognizing Sachem teams for their extraordinary talent,” stated Legislator Tom Muratore. “I commend all the athletes and coaches for a job well done. For the third consecutive year, Goldman Sachs volunteers will work with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s corps of volunteer gardeners on May 19th to prepare, plant and mulch the Museum’s large organic vegetable garden. The project includes preparation, weeding and planting the flower gardens around the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry. Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot. CTW is Goldman Sachs’ global initiative that allows the firm’s employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local nonprofit organizations. In 2013, more than 25,000 volunteers from 50 offices around the world partnered with over 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects. The 43-acre estate was built in the early twentieth century by William K. Vanderbilt II, greatgrandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad and builder of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate includes a spectacular, 24-room, Spanish-Revival style mansion. The museum complex includes a marine museum as well as natural-history, ethnographic-artifact and animal-habitat galleries, and the newly renovated, state-of-the-art Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium.

Fitness and a cleaner environment may be some of the original reasons for participating in Bike/WalkTo- School-Day, but for the Cherry Avenue Elementary School students and their families, it is the spirit of community that for the third year has brought out the “pedal pushers” in droves. After years of success with Walk-To- School-Day on national and international levels, the Partnership for a Walkable America introduced National BikeTo- School-Day three years ago; and thanks to the efforts of Cherry Avenue PTA Wellness Committee Chairperson, Jennifer Travaglia, Cherry Avenue families have been biking since the beginning. “The goal of Bike-ToSchool-Day and Walk-ToSchool-Day is to get kids active in new, fun ways.” Mrs. Travaglia explained. “We all lead such busy lives today, and these events show family members that it is possible to wake up a little earlier and get the

family physically active. I hope our Cherry students and their parents will make biking or walking to school part of their regular routine.” Cherry PTA President Marisa Milo was pleased with the response that has been generated by this event. “This event has quickly become a family favorite at Cherry. And as our students and their families arrived at school this year, they were not only cheered on by Principal Dr. Ihne, but they were also greeted by a special guest—QuackerJack from the LI Ducks! He was on the grounds to give highfives, take pictures, sign autographs and help us support our riders.” As a reminder that the Cherry Avenue PTA has organized a “Cherry Avenue Night Out” at the Ducks Game for some time in June, QuakerJack made a “promotional” social call to the school. “We thought it would be a great idea for QuackerJack to greet students as they rode their

bikes’ to school.” Mrs. Travaglia said. Community support for Bike-To-School-Day continued with officers from the Suffolk County Police Department’s C.O.P.E. unit mounted on bicycles to ensure the bikers safety and to offer their encouragement. While Mrs. Milo expressed on behalf of the PTA, how proud we are “of our families and how they have embraced these events that are spearheaded by Mrs. Travaglia,” Mrs. Travaglia was already looking ahead, adding, “Cherry Avenue Elementary will be participating in Walk-ToSchool-Day on June 4th, 2014.” It may certainly be true with these Cherry Avenue events, that a community that bikes and walks together, enjoys safer neighborhoods and healthier environments, and actually has fun doing it.

Honoring Veterans

Admiring the qualities of character, honor, integrity, and loyalty demonstrated by active and former military personnel, like his father, Sayville Baseball Coach Ryan Cox wanted to instill respect for these values in his players. Four years ago, the first SUPPORT OUR TROOPS DAY was launched before the home game in the baseball field (aka “The Swamp”). Still going strong today, the recent SUPPORT OUR TROOPS DAY, organized by Varsity Baseball Head Coach Ryan Cox and the Sayville Varsity Baseball team, celebrated its Fourth Anniversary by again doing double duty: as a day of recognition for those who served as well as a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, during

which approximately $1,000 in proceeds were raised through sales of camouflage t-shirts, baked goods, and refreshments sold by High School clubs, classes, and Baseball Booster Club. The highpoint of the event honored veterans along with current service men and women, including those valiant Sayville alumni who are currently serving here and abroad to defend our country. It began with Sayville High School student Sean Barry playing military themes on the bagpipes and the Color Guard from VWF Post 433: Gary Gentile, Andy Henning, Michael Alcabes, Joan Furey, Rick Erdmann, and Chris Imperato marching across the infield. “We, as Americans,

are grateful to our military personnel who are presently serving our country,” began the prepared announcement, read by Physical Education Teacher Jen Wittman Cahill, which was broadcast across the field as part of the Support Our Troops ceremony. “…and to our Veterans who have paved the way with their service.” After those words of thanks, Senior Bobby Danzi played a jazzed-up version of the National Anthem on his electric guitar. The ceremony officially ended with the first-pitch, thrown by Michael Hewson, Sr. (Air Force) to his son: Matthew Hewson, a Senior pitcher for Sayville. The game with Amityville ended in victory for the Sayville Flashes.

SHOWING APPRECIATION - Connetquot Central School District John Pearl Elementary School kindergarten students recently hosted the annual Mother’s Day Tea event to celebrate Mother’s Day. The students treated their mothers, fathers and grandmothers to tea and cookies and entertained them by performing songs dedicated to the mothers. Students also created colorful greeting cards and placemats with special Mother’s Day messages for their guests. The annual “Mother’s Tea” is an opportunity for students to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of parents and guardians.

On Wednesday evening, April 23rd, car aficionados assembled at the Connetquot Public Library for H. Roy Jaffe’s slideshow presentation of The Most Beautiful And Unusual Cars Ever Built. Before the program, patrons reminisced about their most treasured automotive gems, and the thrill of driving them. Roy took the audience on a passage through time, from the 1911 Breese Paris Convertible Roadster to the 1972 Maserati Boomerang. Roy’s journey began in the Northwest Bronx at the tender age of thirteen when he first considered a career in car design. Although, his first vehicle was a motorcycle, it was unique, one-of a-kind cars that captured his imagination.

He displayed a sketch of the Phantom Corsair that he’d seen at the 1938 World’s Fair. After obtaining an engineering degree at New York University, Roy went to work for General Electric but his career eventually took his to the experimental department of General Motors. It was at GM as a senior stylist that he worked on designs leading to some of the most innovative cars built in the 1950s. During this groundbreaking time in the automotive industry, Roy designed the last three-wheeled Martin in 1954. The Power Point presentation covered a series of pioneering vehicles with exceptional design features including the 1954 Rolls Royce Wraith Hooper which was

built with no blind spots. According to Roy, the stylish 1936 Hispano Suiza V-12 ranked amongst the world’s greatest cars. Upon his retirement, Roy later became a freelance industrial designer. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Project Lifesaver On Tuesday, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine presented a Project Lifesaver informational seminar to parents and caregivers of individuals with Autism and other cognitive impairments. Representatives from

Eastern Suffolk BOCES, as well as local school and medical professionals also attended the event, which was held at the Brookhaven Town Hall Auditorium in Farmingville. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver program is a countywide emergency response locator service

capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments which may cause them to wander and become lost. The program, which Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented in Suffolk County in 2007, combines radio technology and specially trained search and rescue personnel from the

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. Suffolk County Sheriff’s

Office Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a person who has a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome,

Field Of Dreams The 6,000 pinwheels displayed on a Stony Brook University field represents the annual lives lost to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field of pinwheels is also symbolic of a growing theme of the annual Ride for Life and for Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization. Pendergast, the ALS specialists at Stony Brook Medicine, and supporters of the Ride for Life envision that like the pinwheels, a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease is out there with an answer ‘blowing in the wind.’ “Hope is alive, and there is no doubt in my mind we will eventually find a cure. That’s why we press forward,” said Pendergast, at the Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony took place on the Stony Brook University campus on May 10th. The ceremony is the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients that ends in Manhattan on May 17th. The Ride for Life, which raises awareness and funds for ALS research, began in 1998. During the ceremony, the Ride for Life donated $160,000 to Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association-certified center on Long Island. “This day is about the Riders, the people who support them, those who provide their medical care, and the researchers who are working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital, and Senior VP for Health Systems at Stony Brook Medicine. “We salute the courage of all the patients and remember those who have been lost due to ALS.”

“All of the pinwheels we see do represent the many lives taken because of ALS, but we see something more,” said Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “I am going to borrow a phrase. It is a ‘field of dreams’ with hope that we will soon celebrate a cure.” Since its inception the Ride for Life has raised close to $5 million to fund ALS research and clinical services. Through the ALS Center of Excellence, Stony Brook clinicians and neuroscience researchers are conducting

research to develop better targeted treatments and launch clinical trials of new investigative therapies against ALS. “The Ride for Life is an amazing experience, and I hope to go the distance,” said Frank Wojcik, 52, of Commack, a patient at Stony Brook and first time Rider. Diagnosed in January 2013, Wojcik said Pendergast inspired him to join the Ride for Life. He has learned more about the disease during his patient journey and thinks that as science continues to gain more knowledge

about ALS, a cure may emerge at some point. “Right now what has been most inspiring is the support along the way, especially all of the kids at the schools on Long Island. They give you so much energy, and hope,” added Wojcik. This year a record number public schools are participating in the Ride for Life. According to Pendergast, more than 50 schools from East Hampton to Manhattan are taking part, some with donations directly from student efforts. An estimated 8,000 Long Island students this month are learning first-hand about the ALS Ride for Life cause. Two ALS patients at the event were strong enough to walk the day’s trek onto the Stony Brook University campus. Clinton Strait, of East Northport, who continues to work as a project manager, said he felt inspired and would hopefully walk on other days during the Ride. Paul Weisman, of Bohemia, walked the Ride course for two days prior to the Stony Brook event. On hand to support the Ride for Life and Stony Brook event were New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn. The event concluded with the Remembrance Ceremony – when the names of 90 people lost to ALS – representing the number of minutes between deaths from ALS in the United States – were read aloud. As the gusts of a coming rainstorm picked up, the families and friends of patients stood around the pinwheel “field of dreams.” Family members then read their loved one’s name aloud, a bell was rung, and a balloon released into the air to honor each of them.
