For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl
(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective

at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Add a minute per side for well-done (160 F). 4. If you are making cheeseburgers, put 2 slices of cheese on each burger 1 minute before the burgers are going to be done. 5. To toast the buns, put them cut-sides down directly over the fire for the last minute of cooking. 6. If serving the burgers directly from the grill, serve on the buns. If the burgers will sit, even for a few minutes, keep the buns and the burgers separate until just before eating. The best garnishes for burgers are the classics: a slice of ripe beefsteak tomato, a mound of sautéed onions, a leaf of romaine lettuce, a dollop of coleslaw or a few slices of dill pickles.

South Country Student-Artists Among Long Island’s Best

The artwork of Bellport High School studentartists Courtney Gerard, Patricia Prott and Tyler Walsh were selected from 388 submissions to exhibit at the Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists 2020 juried exhibit. Additionally, Courtney received the
Costas Family Award for Excellence in Photography for her digital photograph, “Floating.” Tyler also received the Renzo and Lynette Bianchi Scholarship Award for his ink and watercolor work, “Euphoria.” Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the
Heckscher Museum is the only juried exhibition on Long Island offering high school studentartists the opportunity to exhibit their work in a museum. As the museum marks its 100th anniversary this year, 100 works of art were selected for exhibit. Each year, students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit artwork inspired by art shown in the museum. For the first time in the museum’s history, an online format features all of the student artwork selected for exhibit, the students’ artist statements and the artwork that inspired the selectees. The South Country Central School District congratulates the students on this outstanding artistic achievement.

Did You Know? According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, nurses are the second largest group of licensed professionals in the United States. While laws vary depending on where nurses work, many nurses must have their licenses renewed at certain intervals. State boards of nursing, sometimes referred to as “BONs,” were established to oversee and assure the safe practice of nursing in an effort to protect the public’s health. Part of the responsibilities of a BON is to evaluate licensure applications, and some BONs, depending on the state laws, will handle license renewals as well. The goal of license renewals is to ensure licensed nurses are up to date on the latest best practices and procedures. In addition, nurses who have not practiced in some time but want to return to practicing may need to take a refresher course to ensure they can still serve as competent nurses. In states where renewals are required, nurses who continue to practice without renewing their licenses may be subject to discipline. Nurses are urged to stay abreast of the licensing laws where they practice and to contact their BON if they have any questions about the licensure process.

It's always the right time of year for fresh apple pie
C
ertain foods are synonymous with particular holidays or times of year. For example, few people can imagine celebrating Valentine’s Day without ample supplies of chocolate on hand. And what summer barbecue is complete without grilled hot dogs and hamburgers? While these foods and others are must-haves during certain times of the year, that doesn’t mean they cannot be enjoyed whenever a craving arises. Apples, and particularly apple pie, are a staple of many holiday season celebrations. But apple pie is just as delicious in March, April, May, etc., as it is during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s especially true when the apples are fresh. Whether yours is a seasonal or non-seasonal craving for apple pie, be sure to satisfy it with this recipe for “French Apple Pie” from Mollie Cox Bryan’s “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies” (Ten Speed Press). FRENCH APPLE PIE

apples (preferably a tart variety)
1 recipe Plain Pie Pastry (see below)

Makes one 9-inch pie

Separately, combine the corn syrup, flour and sugar and mix well, then add to the raisins and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool until the mixture is just warm, about 10 to 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with 1 rolled-out crust.
PLAIN PIE PASTRY Makes two 9-inch pie crusts cups all-purpose flour teaspoon salt cup vegetable shortening to 7 tablespoons cold milk

tablespoons water
Peel the apples, cut them into thin wedges, and put them in a large bowl. Separately, combine the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, then add to the apples and gently stir until evenly mixed.
Spread the apple mixture in the crust in an even layer, then spread the raisin filling evenly over the apples. Brush the rim of the crust with water, cover with the second rolled-out crust, seal and flute or crimp the edges, and cut a steam vent in the center. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 1 to 2 hours, until completely cool.
To make the icing, combine the sugar and water and mix well. Add the butter and mix until smooth. Brush over the top of the cooled pie before serving.
Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the milk over part of the flour mixture. Gently toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Sprinkle another tablespoon of milk over another dry part, toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Repeat with the remaining milk until all of the flour mixture is moistened. Press the dough together to form 2 equal balls, then flatten into disks. Roll out the crusts right away, or wrap the dough tightly, smoothing out any little wrinkles or air pockets and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball to a thickness of 1⁄8 inch. Use a light touch and handle the dough as little as possible.

Bayport-Blue Point High School students Lauren Zabell and Daphne Sparacio were recently honored with Student Achievement Awards from the Town of Islip in World Languages and Performing Arts, respectively. Zabell has been a French student since seventh grade and has acquired a high level of proficiency in French vocabulary and grammar. Her curiosity and interest in other languages and cultures led to her decision to study a third language starting in 10th grade, when she added Spanish to her academic course load. She has been a top student in both French and Spanish ever since and is currently is co-president of her school’s World Culture Club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and an elementary school tutor. Sparacio has studied music since elementary school. She is currently a tenor saxophone player in the high school Symphonic Band and Jazz Band and performs vocally with the high school Vocal Jazz Choir. She has worked tirelessly to prepare NYSSMA solos that have earned her selection into the competitive NYSCAME/SCMEA All-County Mixed Chorus and the SCMEA Vocal Jazz Ensemble. For the past two years, Sparacio’s NYSSMA All-State auditions afforded her an alternate spot with the prestigious NYSSMA All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which she performed in March. Daphne has also assumed leading roles in Bayport-Blue Point High School’s musical productions for the past few years, most recently as Mabel in “The Pirates of Penzance.” The Bayport-Blue Point School District congratulates both students on this welldeserved honor.

The American Cancer Society’s cadre of 1.5 million dedicated volunteers are not only helping fight cancer but using their skills in unique ways to help those affected by Coronavirus. Nathan Levinton is a career counselor for the National Guard. His passion for music has led to a part time job as a DJ, to which he regularly volunteers to play music in support of American Cancer Society events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. These days, the Medford resident has a new way of giving back to the community through his hobby as a 3D printer. When the COVID-19 crisis began and with supplies in demand, Nathan decided to utilize his resources to create face shields for medical professionals and first responders. The response has been so great that he is finding it hard to keep up. He’s already donated 170 face shields and 150 mask extenders plus has another 6-dozen ready for use in Suffolk county. He’s working alone and
in tandem with a Long Island wide network of creators who are making supplies for our first responders. “Nathan is a volunteer hero in my mind,” says Brittany Lawton, a community development manager at the Society. “When Gov. Cuomo asked for ingenuity, Nathan took the lead in helping others. His talent motivates walkers at Jones Beach each October during Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and today his talent and his commitment to service is keeping others safe. “The American Cancer Society strives to create a culture of gratitude for all volunteers,” says Marie Cimaglia, Director of Community Development on Long Island and NYC. “This National Volunteer Week, we take an extra moment to express gratitude to each and every volunteer who has joined our mission, and the mission to help us through this pandemic,” she said. Cimaglia continues by saying that during this difficult time, cancer won’t stop; and neither
will we. “Despite cancelled events, the cancer-fighting work of the Society continues,” she said. As the COVID-19 crisis grows larger every day, cancer patients – many of whom already have compromised immune systems - are more vulnerable than ever. The public is asked to stay informed during this crisis at cancer.org/coronavirus. Donations are being accepted at cancer.org/ rapidresponse. Right now, the greatest need is information related to COVID-19 and cancer with 80 percent of all inquiries on the phone and online chat during March were related to this crisis, according to Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director, American Cancer Society. The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and
will still go out and put themselves at risk to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10-week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media. GIRLS ON THE RUN LONG ISLAND CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR GIRLS DURING COVID-19
As we are adjusting to a new way of life for the time being, Girls on the Run continues to provide inspiration, support and joy to our communities and girls during this challenging time. In addition to transitioning to a Virtual 5K event, we have mobilized other strategies to drive our mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident: GOTR at Home provides fun and interactive lessons that girls and families can do at home, designed specifically for girls in mind! These lessons aim to provide girls of all abilities with an opportunity to learn and grow, just as they would have at their scheduled practices. GOTR at Home lessons are available in an easy-to-follow written format so girls and their grown-ups can participate together AND as a YouTube video series specifically for girls. # G O T R G o t Yo u r B a c k aligns with the Girls on the Run mission and values and includes content, resources and activities to help girls and families stay physically active, connected and engaged. This digital campaign will offer alternative tips and activities for all families, volunteers,

About Girls On The Run Girls on the Run is a national physical activitybased positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. South Country Faculty Parades Through Kreamer Street Community Stormy skies on April 30 cooperated during the afternoon for Kreamer Street Elementary School faculty as they drove through the school community’s neighborhood streets, accompanied by South Country Ambulance, to demonstrate unity and support for students. During the parade, residents were encouraged to wear their Kreamer Kingdom gear, make a
celebratory sign, wave and make noise as drivers passed by students’ homes. Even residents who do not live on the parade route parked their cars on neighboring streets to join in the festivities. The parade brought about a sense of togetherness for all who attended. Principal Sean Clark said the parade’s goal was to raise student spirits and to instill a sense of unity during a time when
social distancing is in place and students are learning virtually, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Kreamer Kingdom is known for its sense of community spirit, and this parade is an example of how our faculty instills a sense of pride and togetherness, even in a time of social distancing and school closures,” Mr. Clark said.
