More than 300 female athletes and an equal number of parents, coaches, friends and fans gathered to watch young women from over 25 local high schools compete in a variety of track and field events. Directed by Mr. Jim Crowley, this is an annual event which serves as an opportunity to showcase the talent of young female athletes.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Maidstone Club, East Hampton on Wednesday, June 3rd. Twenty–two foursomes will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. The Maidstone Club is a private country club on the Atlantic Ocean in the village of East Hampton. Maidstone Club boasts a private beach, pool, tennis house and club house. The club was founded as a ninhole course in 1891 and expanded to eighteen holes in 1899. The golf course was originally designed by William H. Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Library Literacy Luau On Monday, April 29th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Fourth Annual Library Literacy Luau, a districtwide program sponsored by the librarians of the Connetquot School District in cooperation with the PTA. Held at Connetquot High School, the luau provided students with the unique opportunity to meet local authors and illustrators. Literacy-themed student artwork was on display for all to enjoy. Attendees visited the library’s table where Librarians Christina Mattessich and Nancy Seims provided literature on library services including museum passes and Live-study help. Children and their parents were happy to receive
“Pete the Cat” bags as well as color by numbers. This novel event, designed to celebrate the joy of reading, provided games and activities for participants with raffles and prizes. As the library commemorates its 40th anniversary, they continue their commitment to young patrons with innovative programs from “Baby’s Great Beginnings” to “Battle of the Books.” With spring quickly fading into summer and the days growing longer, our celebration continues. Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Assistant Principal, Mr. Joseph Licator, welcomed Suffolk County Police Detective James Mosby and BMX icon Stephen Cerra to the campus to speak with
sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Detective Mosby, using a visual slideshow, talked to the students about his work for the Suffolk County Police Department and the methods used to protect citizens and solve crimes. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently swore in over 120 students into the Ambassador Program, a program that is run and created by Town of Islip Anti Bias Task Force Chairman Rabbi Moss and Co-Chairwoman Mary Louise Cohen. The students are selected from nine high schools and middle schools. They meet four times each year, rotating locations. Sessions feature guest speakers who tell stories of various biases and present a final project
about how they will take what they have learned and make a difference in their schools and communities. This program has grown quite significantly since its inception five years ago. They hope to continue to expand and include all middle and high schools throughout the Town of Islip. “It is encouraging to see these young leaders come together in an effort to improve relations within our community and promote equality,”

Students across the country were invited to focus their minds and efforts to engage people to recycle plastic bags through the “Think Outside the Bag!” plastic film recycling contest, sponsored by Jason Learning and the Plastic Industry Trade Association, along with support from Hilex Poly, a plastic bag manufacturer. This contest challenged students to use creativity to increase the recycling of plastic bags
and influence others to recycle, including product wrapping, dry cleaner bags and grocery bags. Ms. Moran’s Lincoln Avenue students created a beautiful basket using these materials, and students created posters urging consumers to recycle. Their posters and baskets were entered in to the “Think Outside the Bag” national contest, accompanied by a power point. Their work was reviewed by a panel at
the Plastic Trade Industry Conference held in Houston, Texas last week, and their work was awarded third place in the K-4 band and first place in their category! The team will receive a plaque, student certificates, and $250 in which the students wish to purchase science-related books for our library. Congratulations to Ms. Moran and her Lincoln Avenue students! We thank them for their important work!
“Harold Limouze was a peace-loving man who touched people’s hearts and lives in many ways,” remarked his daughter Judy Limouze Price during the recent tribute held in honor of the former Sayville educator and High School Principal whose entire career and life-long pursuits were devoted to peace. After an extraordinary ninety-four years, Harold passed away in August 2014. So, it was certainly apropos that the South Country Peace Group, part of the Suffolk Peace Network, would choose the Sayville High School Courtyard and the site of the High School peace pole for their dedication. The dedication included the installation of a memorial plaque in the Senior Lounge, and after
introductions by Carol Kolar from the South Country Peace Group, a retrospective provided by his daughters Judy and Wendy Joy Forrest that described Harold’s life accomplishments and philosophy and touched upon Harold’s active involvement in the Sayville community. Among the guests at the well-attended dedication ceremony were Harold’s wife of seventy-two years Edna, daughters along with their spouses David Price and Keven Forrest, two of his five grandchildren, Jeffrey Price and Jim Price, and Harold’s nephew Peter Goodale and his wife Virginia. Dignitaries representing the South Country Peace Group, Sayville Rotary, the Sayville Library, Sayville School District, St. John’s
Lutheran Church, and the Maritime Museum also joined the ceremony, representing the diverse groups in which Harold was involved during his lifetime. Others present to honor Harold were neighbors, members of the Garden Club of Sayville and many other community residents. The plaque donated by the South Country Peace Group reads: “Education leads to Understanding. Understanding leads to Peace. All three are needed to solve the major problems that confront the world. This peace pole is dedicated to Harold J. Limouze, Sayville High School Educator/ Administrator, 1946-1975,” and is a fitting tribute to such an exceptional man.
AFTERNOON TEA - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined the Sayville Village Improvement Society at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum for a celebration of the Society’s 100th Anniversary. Everyone there happily took part in an arboretum tradition: afternoon tea; prepared and experienced the way that William Bayard Cutting’s family would have experienced it at the turn of the 20th century. Supervisor Carpenter praised the Society’s members for their tireless efforts to improve the greater Sayville community, and presented an official certificate from the Town Board thanking them for their service.

Early May weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a grand opening of a green house. The Functional Academics and Career Development class officially opened the doors to the greenhouse at a grand opening ceremony on Saturday May 2nd. The Sayville students, along with their teacher Donna Trpicovsky, Transition Coordinator Claire Rymer, and Administrator for Special Education Tracy Von Eschen, were hard at work to make their project a huge success. Claire Rymer, Sayville Public Schools Transition Coordinator, summarized the concepts, philosophy,and excitement of this endeavor with the following remarks: This experience that we have set up for these students is related to the occupational goals of each student. The project is designed to introduce students to the world of work and to develop traits in their area of specialty. This educational project is
designed to give students training in basic greenhouse operation through actual work experience in a student operated greenhouse. It is our plan to have the students growing, maintaining and selling their own plants, vegetables, herbs and flowers for next year. It is my hope that this project will positively impact our students in some of the following ways: Prepare our students for the world of work: • Help our students adapt themselves to changing business world; • Help our students develop the skills needed to achieve their personal career goals; • Help our students become knowledgeable consumers; • Increase student awareness of new trends in Greenhouse technology and products The greenhouse is also a great way to link gardens to the school curriculum: the greenhouse can provide
Connetquot Central School District administrators and 13 former Connetquot High School student-athletes and coaches recently attended a ceremony for the induction of the newest members to the Connetquot Athletic Wall of Fame. The ceremony, followed by a brunch, honored 11 former Connetquot student-athletes and two former coaches for their outstanding athletic achievement during their time at Connetquot High School. Each year, a committee of veteran coaches, teachers

The 2015 inductees received a replica plaque of those to be hung on the wall denoting their graduation year and the sport for which they were honored. My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

D’Arcangelis’ boyfriend and Connetquot High School senior, AJ (Andrew) Serra has contacted Coach Castaldo a
week in advance to plan his “prom proposal” before the Lady Thunderbirds game against Ward Melville High School. Marissa and her fellow captains met with the other team captains and umpire before the game while the rest of the team helped unfurl a tenfoot banner between the second and third bases that
read “Marissa, Will You Go To Prom With Me?!” Upon hearing the crowd’s reaction, Marissa turned to find the surprise waiting for her. She said yes and the crowd, including district Superintendent Lynda G. Adams cheered on the happy couple. Marissa and her teammates eagerly await prom which is set for June 24th, 2015.

Art Contest Winners The first annual eSchoolData Login Page Art Contest was a resounding success, with over two dozen entries received. The contest runs regionally in NY over the course of the school year to promote as much student participation as possible. School districts in Suffolk County were the latest to complete the contest and will be followed by eSchoolData districts in the Western New York region. The Northeast region was the first area scheduled and was completed in December of 2014 followed by districts in Nassau and Westchester Counties. Participating districts’ initial entries were accepted from February 2015 through April 2015. After careful consideration, the voting committee selected the First, Second and Third Place winners below:
• First Place - Rob Subtirelu (Connetquot School District) • Second Place - Amanda Crowley (Babylon District) • Third Place - Mia Karlin-Cappello (East Hampton School District) The following students were awarded Honorable Mention: Jennifer Sanchez (Copiague School District), Hira Ali (Connetquot School District), Christina Crichlow (Brentwood School District), and Elizabeth Pitre (Copaigue School District). Contestants were required to submit works of art that focused on a specific theme relative to current educational topics. This year’s theme was STEM + Art, and challenged students to find how art is incorporated into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students were
allowed to submit either a photograph or a scanned image of a drawing. The first place winner’s submission will appear on the eSchoolData login page as part of release 4.5 later this month and will remain until the next regional winner is announced. In addition, all winning submissions will be displayed on the eSchoolData website at: w w w. e s c h o o l d a t a . c o m <http://www.eschooldata. com/> eSchoolData, LLC created the art contest as a unique way to give back to school districts and the surrounding community, by promoting local art and providing monetary awards for the winning entries. homerun put Connetquot ahead early in the game. Schwartz was also the winning pitcher for the T-Birds pitching a complete game with 6 strike out-outs against the opposing Patriots of Ward Melville High School.
Connetquot High School’s Varsity Softball team has an overall record of 14-4 in the League 1 standings. Coach Ross Castaldo and his team look forward to the upcoming season playoffs.

Golf Outing Set On June 4th, Mercy Haven will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Empire National Bank Vice President and Branch Manager Dorothy Overton, who serves as Board Chair for Mercy Haven, emphasized Empire’s commitment to community issues like those addressed by Mercy Haven. “Everyone deserves safe and dignified housing,” says Overton.
“Mercy Haven has been making it happen for some of Long Island’s most at-risk residents for 30 years.” She added, “The golf outing is a wonderful way to meet neighbors, network, and show support for one of the causes that makes Long Island a great place to live.” Empire National Bank has been the Tournament Sponsor since 2008. For the third consecutive year, volunteers will walk 130 miles across Long Island raising money for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The journey will begin on Sunday, May 24th, at the Montauk Point Lighthouse and will take the seasoned volunteers to the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, May 30th. The funds raised will benefit the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, as well as bring about awareness of autism and other developmental disabilities. “I have had the honor and pleasure of working with these students/alumni from St. Johns University for over three years,” commented DDI Director of Development Dan Rowland. “I was astounded when they first proposed the idea of doing such an event and then amazed that they are undertaking this journey for the third year in a row. I think this reflects very well on this generation of our future leaders as they all embody the highest ideals and dedication to serving others less fortunate.“ “DDI is an organization
