Cleanup at Santora/Bonacasa VFW Post 400 Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa recently coordinated a yard cleanup at the Santora/ Bonacasa VFW Post 400 in Farmingville. In addition to Caracappa and Post members, assistance was provided by Affatato Paving, Boy Scouts from Troop #124, Cub Scouts from Pack# 124 and other community members.

The cleanup effort was organized as a result of illegal dumping of concrete and debris that occurred on Post #400’s grounds. “I was astonished to learn that an individual or business would dishonor our veterans by selfishly littering on the post’s grounds,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “I knew they needed help,

and was pleased with the response and outpouring of support I received from Affatato Paving, the Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts from Troop 124 in Holbrook, and many others. As we honor our veterans during the month of May, which is National Military Appreciation Month, I thank all volunteers for a job well done.”

Beneﬁts Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Story by Linda Mittiga Coach Nicole MendezChicas reported that during their last dual meet on April 9th, the Sayville/ Bayport Blue Point Girls Swimming & Diving Team had significant accomplishments. “That day we recognized and said good-bye to our seniors. However, the seniors were not the only ones who were highlighted. All of the girls swam and dove well, many beating their best times and winning points for the team. Kathryn Brady made the NYS Championship qualifying time in the 200 IM; Jordan Carpentieri and Emma Haas made the qualifying time in the 100 Butterfly. However, the biggest accomplishment was made by Sayville

Junior Jillian Rastello, who not only beat her best score in diving, she broke the school record with 303.6 points. That score places her first in Long Island and 4th in NYS.” Jillian’s mom, Kerri, attributes her daughter’s remarkable diving to her ten years as a competitive gymnast. “…she tried diving in the spring of seventh grade. The varsity coach came to see her and asked her to dive with varsity in the fall of eighth grade and that’s where she started diving and ended gymnastics.” After the Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving Team won the League III Championships on Friday, April 16, Coach Nicole Mendez-Chicas was elated by more achievements. “It

was a very exciting meet,” she said, “with more girls making Suffolk County qualifying times (Chloe Jeffares in the 100 Freestyle and Taylor Carpentieri in the 100 Breaststroke), Brenna Horan making the NYS Qualifying time in the 100 Butterfly, and Jordan Carpentieri breaking the school record in the 100 Butterfly with a meter time of 1:04.87! Boys Varsity Lacrosse Improves To 2-0 The Connetquot boys’ varsity lacrosse team defeated crosstown rival SachemNorth, on May 6th at home, by a score of 7-5. In the most exciting game so far this season, the T-birds got off to a 5-1 lead by the half, only to

fight off a ferocious offense by the visitors in the second half to earn the win. Sophomore Tyler McCarthy scored four goals, and sophomore Tyler Moore added two. Shaun Hill went 15-16 on faceoffs, and Nick

Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Woodhull Elementary School first grade students helped to spread the word about the importance of recycling as they created projects for this year’s Earth Day Challenge organized by Senator Phil Boyle’s office. The students used recycled materials to create new creations. Their original projects included a necklace made from water bottle tops and plastic eggs, a book using a paper bag and recycled handwriting paper, a throwing game using two water jugs and a bird feeder made from a laundry detergent bottle.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health

at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated

appliances. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the

affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http:// doi.org/10.1002/jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a non-traumafocused, easy-to-learn technique that was found in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are trauma-focused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This

The artwork of Bellport High School studentartists Giana Porter and Maria Slavnova were selected from 331 submissions to exhibit at The Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists 2021 juried exhibit. Additionally, Giana won the Donald G. Hom, Jr. Scholarship Award for her piece, “The Beauty of Day Dreams.” Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum is among the most prestigious juried art shows for high school students on Long Island. Of the 50 high schools that participated, only 83 pieces were included in the exhibition, which runs from April 27-May 23. To be considered for the exhibition, students

The cultivation of delicious crops was at the forefront of a recent yearly initiative at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, as students across grade levels geared up to raise different fruits and vegetables in the building’s numerous growing areas. Fourth and fifth grade students created pallet gardens to be placed outside each second and third grade

classroom for students to plant an assortment of lettuces, radishes and herbs. They also constructed growing trellises for kindergarten and first grade students to plant and care for snow peas. As part of the expansive study of the growing process, students start seeds inside using both traditional pots and a hydroponic system. As the year progresses, younger students will be paired with

older students to hold buddy planting events to transfer the seedlings to their permanent growing place in either the pallet gardens or one of the school’s raised garden beds. Each year, this outstanding effort led by students and staff produces hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables which are donated to Island Harvest and distributed to families in need.

Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have announced that the first-ever Youth Week will be held through May 23 to honor, mentor and celebrate young people in Suffolk County. A collaboration among the Suffolk County Legislature, Suffolk County Executive Bellone, the Suffolk County Youth Bureau, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, the inaugural weeklong celebration will feature several events including a job fair, an awards ceremony, and a day of community service. Suffolk County Youth Week is the result of legislation sponsored by Legislator Richberg and approved by the county legislature last year to designate the third week of May as “Youth Week” starting in 2021. The goal of Youth Week is to recognize children between the ages of 9 and 12 and teenagers, and celebrate their active participation in their communities. “I want to thank all of our partners and supporters who helped to bring this Inaugural Youth Week to fruition,” said Legislator Richberg, the representative for the 15th Legislative District. “Youth Week

All students in grades 3 and up participate in instrumental music ensembles. Students in grades kindergarten through second grade receive general music twice a week. Students in grades 3 and up also receive one period of

general music each week. For the 2020-2021 school year, students participated in vocal activities during remote instruction. The instrumental ensembles continued to rehearse weekly following all Covid guidelines and safety regulations. Despite the challenges brought on by pandemic conditions, Woodhull was able to successfully and safely offer their music program to all students this school year.
