Planting Seeds As part of an interdisciplinary English and science project, several Bayport-Blue Point High School students completed a hands-on project this spring aimed at taking care of the Earth and their community. The students, who are enrolled in classes
taught by Stacie Pintar, Phil Turano, and Michele Cornwell, learned how to plant and transfer seeds in the high school’s green house and then put their new skills into action. They worked together to transfer dirt, plant seeds and care for the plants. The seeds planted included

Sayville Sophomore Zoe Rivera had an amazing vision. The Girl Scout who had been working independently on the highest Girls Scout achievement - the Gold Award - selected a project that would fulfill the requisite of having a positive impact on a community. However, Zoe chose to broaden the community aspect by relocating her project all the way to Africa. “Her project was to build a water well in Liberia,” Mrs. Kathy Van Dorn explained about her former student, “right outside of a school and provide a clean water
source to the surrounding villages. In order to accomplish this, she had to raise $3,000 to install the well. This required raising awareness about a less fortunate country within our own community.” Zoe gave presentations within the school district to inform her home community about her project and to help raise awareness for the importance of clean water. Her energy was unstoppable and her ingenuity was enterprising. “Zoe set up bins to collect loose change at schools and organized fundraisers,” Mrs. Van Dorn continued. “One of the fundraisers
she hosted was a benefit concert which was held at Sayville High School with the Tri-M students, middle school jazz choir and two a capella groups from William Floyd High School. She also arranged a Pancake Fundraiser at Applebee’s in Patchogue.” The fundraisers along with the loose-change collection added up better than originally hoped. “What an outstanding young lady! Not only did she raise her target goal of $3,000,” Mrs. Van Dorn announced with excitement, “she ended up raising $6,200!” With more than double the target, Zoe will now be able to fund two water wells for some well-deserving children. In late March, after Zoe paid the company to build the wells in Liberia, a process expected to take six to eight weeks, the Liberian videographer/ photographer associated with the project began sending Zoe photos of her one-time vision, now a reality.

Legislation Passed 92, on December 6th, 2015, is well deserving of this park bearing her name. Whitehouse was an integral part of the Sayville community where she was a teacher in the Sayville School District for 25 years and a member of the Sayville School Board for five years. Whitehouse also spent much of her time giving back to the community
as a civic leader with boy and girl scout troops, little league sports and youth sailing clubs. Additionally, Whitehouse volunteered for the Sayville Food Pantry, Sayville Library, and St. Ann’s Church of Sayville. Whitehouse was also ahead of her time as it relates to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Special Delivery By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now
showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Fowl Play: Through the Lens The chicks at Isabella Rossellini’s Long Island farm are ready for their close-up. The international actress and filmmaker has collaborated with Brookhaven photographer Patrice Casanova in a series of portraits capturing her Heritage Breed of chickens in all their fine-feathered glory. The photographs will be on exhibit at the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society (BBHS), beginning with the nonprofit’s annual Gala on Saturday, June 4th, and on view through July 31st, 2016. Isabella’s Farm is part of the Peconic Land Trust, a nonprofit organization established to ensure the protection of Long Island’s agricultural heritage. The farm produces organic crops, natural honey, and is home to many breeds of chicken, including Blue and Silver Cochin, Barred Rock, and Wyandotte. Others, including Golden Campine, Egyptian Fayoumi, White Crested Black Polish, and Silver Spangled Hamburg, are quite rare and distinctive. Neighbors Francisco Costa and John DeStefano, Executive-in-Charge, Black Swan Stables; are the “proud parents of the flock,” having paid for the chicks, the hen house, and the chicken run. As recognized by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, artisanal farms are increasingly critical to the global protection of old seeds, heirloom vegetables, and rare breeds of farm animals. “I’m raising chickens for the first time, and was surprised to discover they have personalities – one, calm and docile; another, dominant and aggressive,” explains Ms. Rossellini, known for her modeling career as well as acting. “These personality traits give them distinct
postures and expressions often too fleeting and subtle to register with the naked eye. But Casanova’s photographs capture these expressions, revealing real ‘chick appeal’ and, as presented on stark white background, might well spring from the pages of Vogue.” According to Mr. Casanova who visited Isabella’s Farm every week, the photography project started as a record of the chickens’ passage to maturity, from ‘peeps to full grown,’ but ultimately, revealed the feathered flock as “fashion plates.” “I was astonished by how the varieties of chicken began to differentiate over time, some with a topnotch
of feathers, others with finely detailed, jewel-like heads, and others with personalities just made for the camera,” said Mr. Casanova. “The BBHS exhibit is a chance for viewers to see farm animals in a new light, and with fashion’s sense of flair.” Patrice Casanova, who comes from Aix en Provence,

Fifteen outstanding educators, from schools located in the 4th NYS Senate District, were honored at a ceremony held on May 5th at the Bay

the best and brightest each year to ensure that the classrooms are pieces of intellectual rigor and stimulation. Senator Boyle proudly honored two West Point Cadets from his district; Cadet Shannon Wisseman (class of 2018) who resides in Sayville, and Cadet Jordan Bailey (class of
