Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

With programs specifically designed for teens, education, enjoyment and community service are vital. The Connetquot Public Library also introduced a Teen Advisory Board in March

2015 through the hard work and dedication of Teen Librarian Angela Breslin. Over two years later, with about 53 active members, their role has expanded, grown and flourished. While the program gives teens from 6th grade and up the opportunity to earn community service, it also gives them the opportunity to change a life. Teens take part in programs throughout the year, assisting staff and serving as role models for our youngest patrons. Volunteers also help out at various school functions including the John Pearl Harvest Festival. On your next trip to the library, when you hear the echoes of laughter, or see the art projects and culinary delights of our youngest ones, know that along with a committed staff that there are teens enriching the lives of the next generation, changing the world, one stitch, one act, one day at a time.

Festivals of Music Bayport-Blue Point High School student-musicians gathered multiple awards and recognitions during their recent trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2017 Festivals of Music Competition. The district is happy to announce that the symphonic band, jazz band, symphony orchestra and string orchestra earned placed first in their respective categories. The

concert band and chamber choir earned second-place standings within their categories. Additionally, the symphony orchestra was awarded the Overall Orchestra Award, and the symphonic band was awarded the Overall Band Award. In addition to the group awards, student-musicians Alisa Barsch, Josh Lurie and James Herlihy were

also awarded based on their outstanding solo performances. “This weekend the Bayport-Blue Point HS Music Department had a wonderful and successful trip to Washington, D.C.,” said Bayport-Blue Point High School music teacher David Johnson. “We are very proud of the students and the way they handled themselves throughout the course of the weekend.”

Race to the Finish More than 100 individuals from the Connetquot Central School District took part in this year’s Duffield Dash – a one-mile fun run and the 5K footrace around the neighborhood surrounding Helen B. Duffield Elementary School. “Our multiple sponsorships from local vendors and the hard work of the PTA made the Dash a fun and

successful experience for all involved,” said Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell. Throughout the event, volunteers of the Lakeland Fire Department were on hand and provided tours of several emergency response vehicles and spoke with attendees about the various equipment used to protect the residents. While the event was a great way for the

community to join together in fitness and fun, several individuals were presented with top awards for their finish times in the races. The top performers for the One-Mile Fun Run were third-grader DJ Hellberg and fourth-grade student Victoria Flynn. The male and female winners of the 5k race were community members Joshua Jastemski and Sarah Hansen, respectively.

Arbor Day at the Arbors Third-grade students in Diane Boccio’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently visited their friends at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility of Bohemia in celebration of Arbor Day. Throughout the course of their visit, the students

were able to share their colorful drawings and posters illustrating the beauty of the spring season, and placed beautiful flowers into pots with their Arbors’ friends. “Each year, the school comes up with a theme connected to academics, social-emotional learning and dignity for all students,”

said Donna Leopardi, youth and family services coordinator at John Pearl Elementary School. “The themes are integrated into the children’s everyday experience, and this year’s theme of ‘Hand in Hand Across Our Land’ has been applied to districtwide initiatives.”

Members of the Woodhull Elementary School community helped to beautify the Robert Moses Field 5 in late April as they participated in an islandwide cleanup project of Fire Island National Seashore. The students were given

supplies by FINS Assistant Superintendent Kelly Fellner and preceded to collect debris and refuse along Burma Road up to the National Parks Service checkpoint. On the return trip, the group split up and cleared the bay and ocean shores.

The cleanup project was a collaborative effort of the parks service, the Fire Island Association, and the Fire Island Year Round Resident Association, and coincided with the annual national celebration of Earth Day.

Lessons in Recycling Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School first-graders recently learned about recycling and the benefits such actions have on the world during a recent visit from Recycling Educator Danielle Wynn from the Islip Town Department of

Brushing Up on Safety “During the event, the children of the community had their bicycle helmets checked for proper size, and had their tire pressure measured,” said Linda Tabatchnik, retired Connetquot educator and CFAC volunteer. “Additionally, the students were able to ride their bicycles through an obstacle course with

turns and stops, and all participants received bicycle safety literature, activity booklets, reflective armbands and collars.” The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office provided the bike rodeo clinic to teach children real world skills necessary to ride bicycles safely. Close to 75 children took part in this fun event.

Rallying to Support

The halls and classrooms of Connetquot High School were recently filled with students, staff, administrators and teachers wearing special grey T-shirts to show support for and help to celebrate student Alexa Renda’s 17th birthday. Connetquot’s Helping Hands Club, along with the junior class, rallied together to show their

support and also raise needed funds to help the Renda family. Alexa is currently a junior who was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, while her sister Brook, a freshman, is also being treated for leukemia. “Proceeds from the sale of these special T-shirts go directly to the Renda family to help with medical expenses,” said Susan

Schiappa, Connetquot High School Helping Hands Club co-adviser. “So far, we’ve raised over $2,000. The family knows too well about the struggles of battling cancer; they are fighting the fight and winning, and we want the family to know that we will support them in any way this community can.”

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, in association with the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children and the Suffolk County Police Department, recently hosted a districtwide Bike Rodeo event as means of reminding students of key bike safety tips while having fun along the way.

Raising Awareness Staff and student volunteers at OakdaleBohemia Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently joined together to combat diabetes during a schoolwide Juvenile Diabetes Research fundraiser. As part of the initiative, school nurse Gail O’Connor

conducted an interactive video presentation during gym classes in an effort to speak with the students about the disease, and explain how students and the school community could help fund research. Several OBMS students who have juvenile diabetes spoke to their classmates about how the disease

affects their lives, and how important it is to fund the research to provide relief and a cure. After learning more about the topic, the students were then asked to help raise money by selling paper sneakers, and taking part in a communitywide walk event which will take place later this May.

Football Stars Commit During Connetquot High School’s signing ceremony, the following student-athletes were congratulated for committing to continue their academic studies and athletic careers at their chosen college or university. Anthony DeNegro is a wide receiver and linebacker who also earned All-State, All-Long Island, All-County honors. He decided to stay local and has committed to attending Stony Brook University. is a wide receiver and cornerback who was named to the All-Division team, and will attend SUNY Cortland in the fall. Luciano DeRenzo is an offensive and defensive tackle who was named to the All-Suffolk County team and will attend Wagner College. Chris Ferraiolo is an offensive tackle and defensive end, and he will attend Rhodes College in Tennessee. Brandon Hurley is a running back and linebacker, an All-Division athlete and will attend

Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Cameron Rose is an offensive tackle and defensive end, also an AllDivision athlete, and will attend Wagner College. “These young men have been a great source of pride for the coaches, their families, and the entire Connetquot community,” said coach Michael Hansen. “They will be missed, but we are confident in their success, in the classroom and the football field as they move on to the next level.”

Studying Nature Students enrolled in Philip Turano’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes at BayportBlue Point High School were recently able to further their studies with two firsthand nature experiences featuring live animals. The classes raised trout inside their classroom fish tank as the culmination of a project surrounding testing water quality and ecology. After the fish hatched within the classroom, the students

traveled to the Caleb Smith State Park in Smithtown to release the specimen into the Nissequogue River. Additionally, Tony Valderama of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge visited the class and spoke with the students about the various species of owls which live on Long Island and highlighted the unique and critical role that the predators play in the ecosystem. Earlier in the school year, the students dissected owl pellets in an effort to learn more

about the predator-prey relationship in nature, and were able to tie in their research to Mr. Valderama’s visit. “I was very proud of the class and grateful for the opportunity the district affords the Environmental Science program to host qualified guest speakers and conduct meaningful field research projects,” said Bayport-Blue Point High School Environment Science teacher Philip Turano.

Teacher of Excellence Based on her incredible ability to both teach and connect with students in her classroom, Connetquot High School earth science teacher Stephanie Burns was recently recognized by New York State Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence.”

Utilizing her background in meteorology, Ms. Burns recently developed a new weather unit that her students used to gather and analyze data. Additionally, Ms. Burns extends her expansive knowledge to benefit students at the collegiate

level, as she is also an instructor at Stony Brook University, teaching a course titled “Foundations of Earth Science.” Not only is she an expert in her field, but she also possesses an innate ability to mentor her students.

Students Partner The Computer Graphic Arts students in Cora Weule-Sparwasser’s class at Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale used their creative talents to help foster a more supportive environment in Sayville Middle School. Our artists designed and produced eight vinyl decals, each bearing different positive affirmations, and then visited the school to

adhere them to the risers of a staircase located at the center of the school. Sayville Middle School contacted WeuleSparwasser to commission this project because it is something that their students and staff will see every day. Said WeuleSparwasser, “Sayville Middle School is making a difference with the help of our students. This was

an opportunity for our students to help others while utilizing the skills they learn in class.” Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs between the ages of 16 to 21. The skills these students acquire may help them to obtain entrylevel employment.

sandwiches for the Bellport Boys & Girls Club, creating dozens of toiletry baskets to be donated to benefit local veterans, planting gardens courtesy of donations from Bayport Flower Houses and cleaning up debris at Bayport Beach. “Through the Peersto-Peers Program, every ninth-grade student is provided with academic, emotional and social

support,” said David Johnson, Peers-to-Peers program adviser and Bayport-Blue Point High School music teacher. “The program fosters a positive and inclusive school environment while providing every student with an opportunity to develop a meaningful connection with other students and staff.”
