Once upon a time, Toni Panariello and Samantha Buser were a couple of local yoga instructors working at a studio that abruptly closed, igniting their combined entrepreneurial spirit. “We loved the space where we were working, and decided to re-open that yoga studio ourselves, for our community and for our love of the numerous health and wellness benefits of yoga. Now, two years later, Toni and Samantha celebrated their two year anniversary on April 17th, as co-owners of The Welcome Mat Yoga & Wellness, located at 560 Main Street, Suite 3, in Islip. The studio offers all types of yoga practice, including hatha, vinyasa restorative; with beginner through advanced classes. In addition, the studio
offers kids yoga, teen yoga, yin yoga, meditation classes, reiki healing and more. People of all ages can benefit from yoga practice and meditation. For multitasking adults, it offers a calming and balancing sanctuary to restore and regenerate physically, emotionally and spiritually. For children and teens, it sets healthy habits, mindful wellness practices and a more present state of consciousness that will last a lifetime. According to Healthline. com, regular yoga practice is thought to improve quality of life, reduce inflammation, fight depression, improve sleep quality, improve heart health and relieve feelings of anxiety. New students of The Welcome Mat Yoga & Wellness can take advantage

Senior Residents Recognized On April 30, the Bayport-Blue Point School District hosted their 12th annual Senior Resident Recognition Dinner and Evening of Music in the Bayport-Blue Point High School cafeteria. During the course of the event, senior residents of the Bayport-Blue Point community were treated to a special evening filled with delicious food, beautiful musical accompaniment and an exciting raffle courtesy of numerous donations from local businesses and school partnerships.

The sweet sounds of music filled the air due to the efforts of the James Wilson Young Middle School Jazz Band, Bayport-Blue Point High School Jazz Band and Bayport-Blue Point High School Vocal Jazz Choir. Catering was generously
provided by The Fish Store and Cavanaugh’s, as the attendees lined up and were kindly served delicious meals by both staff and community members of the BBP community. To conclude the special evening, prizes were awarded during a raffle, including prize donations from Bayport Flower Houses, Harbor Crab, Parent-Teacher Associations from all educational buildings and the BBP SEED Foundation, to name a few.

On April 30, Supervisor Ed Romaine was joined by Town Councilman Neil Foley and Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri to make their inspection of the new Patchogue River jetty and lighthouse at the Town’s Sandspit Marina. Reconstruction of the jetty and lighthouse is
a joint project funded by New York State ($650,000), the Town ($300,000) and the Village ($100,000). A new fishing pier, which will be accessible to people with disabilities, is to be constructed over the jetty using Town of Brookhaven Community Block Grant funds ($100,000). The
new jetty improves the navigation of vessels moving in and out of the river and the lighthouse provides a beacon to guide them safely on the bay. Pictured left to right in both photos are Councilman Foley, Mayor Pontieri and Supervisor Romaine.

The Connetquot High School Concert Choir recently visited Minnesota, where they participated in several musical performances alongside internationally-renown musicians. During their visit, they took part in a workshop at St. Olaf College lead by choir conductor Dr. Anton Armstrong, who is known in the choral music world for his talents. Based on their high level of achievement and musical successes in the past, the CHS Choir joined the world-famous St. Olaf Choir in their
rehearsal, and were given the opportunity to sing for them as well. The students were also able to collaborate with the Concordia Choir students in conducting classes and rehearsals, singing a preplanned song together and impressing all in attendance. While in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, the Connetquot choir attended a performance by and later performed with the Rose Ensemble, a vocal group specializing in “early music.” Jordan Sramek, Rose Ensemble’s founder and
artistic/executive director, showered the CHS Choir with words of praise for their performance. “The events that took place on the trip to Minnesota were once-in-alifetime experiences for the students of the Connetquot High School Concert Choir,” said Concert Choir Director Brad Drinkwater. “Not only have they transformed into more skilled, knowledgeable and complete human beings, but the choir itself has elevated its standing amongst the top high school choirs in the country.”

Art Students Win At BAFFA
Ten of Bellport High School’s most talented artists featured their artwork in the Bay Area Friends of the Arts High School Exhibit on April 7, held at the BAFFA Art Gallery in Sayville. Carolyn Slovensky was the winner of the prestigious Women Sharing Art, Inc. Scholarship, which is given to a graduating female senior who plans on pursuing art education at the college level. She also received a first-place award for her watercolor, “Roman Temple.” In addition, Hannah Tapler received first place in pottery for her
work, “Evening Falls.” Kyle Muldoon’s mixed media work, “In Your Likeness,” and Audrey Barry’s acrylic painting on wood, “Point of View,” received third-place awards for mixed media and painting, respectively. The annual invitational show and juried exhibition is open to high school students in Sayville, Sachem North and South, Connetquot, Bellport, Longwood, William Floyd and PatchogueMedford. The show is also an opportunity for high school students to showcase their best pieces of artwork and to view the
Powerful Poetry Despite only being a sixth grade student at Ronkonkoma Middle School, Cristian Martinez has already garnished an impressive number of accolades due to his profound work in the world of poetry. Most recently, Cristian was awarded the title of Grand Champion at the Walt Whitman Student Poetry Contest of 2019 for his poem a “A Glimpse of Tomorrow” out of a total of 2,500 other entries.
Due to his successes, his poem will be published in the anthology, “Whitman’s Apprentice Anthology.” He will also be published in the “Poets to Come Anthology” for his original work “Unanswered Questions,” along with two poems in the “Leaves for Me Anthology” for his other works “The Glory” and “My Mentor Robert,” and the Suffolk County Poetry Review for his poem, “Winter.” In addition to his
multiple publications, he won first place for his poem, “Clouds Have Secrets” in the Princess Ronkonkoma 2019 Poetry Contest. Cristian was also a featured poet at his first poetry reading which was held at the Barnes & Noble in Lake Grove in April. He shared that this experience was amazing because he was able to read several poems on different themes that he is concerned about.

As a culminating activity for National Autism Awareness Month, Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J.
