The event provided extended information about the importance of health, nutrition and overall wellness. Organized by nurse Janet LaViolette, the program provided students with the opportunity to become familiar with authentic medical equipment. A great time was had by all.

The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A Day At The Races.

prestigious university without pushing myself through high school. Even though my Grade Point Average was not the greatest during my four years at St. John’s, I had one of the highest ACT scores in the grade. Despite being below the top 10%, I believe my scores were high enough to keep me in the competition for ‘Nova. In addition, my extracurricular activities are what really swayed the admissions officers’ decisions. Now that I’ve gotten into my dream school, I look forward to helping my younger brother do the same. After going through the entire process, I feel as

though I am well versed in the art of the application. Although I may not be the smartest, I realize that one’s grades do not define him/her. There is more to the applicant than a number. Holistically, any student can contribute to an outstanding freshman class. With that being said, if anyone has any questions about my decision, or the application process, feel free to e-mail me. I would love to help, as well as share my knowledge of the college admissions process. As I glide through my last two weeks of high school, I am looking forward to the next four years at Villanova.

Stony Brook University has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and environmental stewardship. Boo Boo Clinic, learned how to change a diaper at the Dolly Hospital, and went on an EMS medical call in a pretend ambulance. Snack was provided at the Rainbow Café, where children were instructed in the importance of eating a healthful rainbow diet. Yoga classes were given by Superintendent Loretta Ferraro, a certified yoga instructor. In addition, there was a healthy heart workshop, body system puzzle play and a simulated operating room for students to explore.

One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Twenty years ago, at five years of age, Daniel Trust almost died in the Rwandan genocide that took his father, mother, and several siblings. That he can talk calmly about his harrowing experiences despite those one hundred days of genocidal mass slaughter of Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda by members of the Hutu majority, as well as the abusive life he endured as a child survivor, is in itself amazing. But the young man (his English name is Daniel Trust) who presented his story to the Sayville High School students was so full of joie de la vie that his genuine message of hope and tolerance resonated with the Sayville students. Sayville Social Studies teacher LynnAnn Perlin invited the Rwandan Genocide survivor to speak to select students on Human Rights Day, ending the weeklong focus on Human Rights. Daniel provided a history of the horrific events that drastically changed his life. He explained that while his mother, father, and two sisters were massacred right before his eyes, thanks to a sympathetic Hutu who hid him, Daniel lived that day. In the aftermath, he suffered the life of an

Green Thumbs Bayport-Blue Point High School students are learning about botany and horticulture in a hands-on way this year by working in the district’s reactivated greenhouse. Located on the high school’s property, the structure has not been in use since the late 1990s and was renovated this fall with the help of several students and science teachers, Phillip Turano and Amity Baum.
