THERAPY DOG VISIT - Connetquot Central School District Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed four therapy dogs, Maureen, Orlagh, Nefertiti and Sadie, along with their handlers for a special assembly about the purpose of therapy dogs. The visit coincides with a three-week educational program when kindergarten students learn about the responsibilities of owning a dog, safety around dogs and the many types of jobs dogs have including police dogs, detection dogs, assistance dogs, guide dogs and therapy dogs.

DUFFIELD DASH - Connetquot Central School District Helen B. Duffield Elementary recently hosted the annual “Duffield Dash.” The event, sponsored by the Duffield Parent-Teacher Association, brought together hundreds of community members, students, family and friends to participate in the one mile “Fun Run” or the 5K footrace around the Duffield neighborhood.

As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors

Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of

Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

When we last left our two Sayville Students, Jared Bergen and Emily Sneddon had advanced at the Regional National History Day Competition, held at Hofstra University, by placing Second in the Senior Group Website category. This made them eligible to compete at the state level in Cooperstown, NY. Now, the historic date of April 27th, 2015 will be memorable in Sayville High School Social Studies Department. On this day, Emily and Jared won First Place for New York State at the State Convention for the National History

Day competition (They competed in the website division). To compete in National History Day, the Sayville social studies students did more than just look up a few facts about the past. Rather, they engaged in critical thinking and problem solving while honing their research, reading, and writing skills. By thoroughly learning their subjects, they became genuine authorities. This was quite evident during the evening showcase, when the students confidently answered questions about their presentations.

With Social Studies teacher advisor LynnAnn Perlin, the two students had worked diligently researching Robert H. Jackson and his legacy with the Nuremberg trials. Their research included interviews with survivors from more recent atrocities such as Sierra Leone and Rwanda, as well as Jackson’s living relatives. Congratulations, Jared and Emily, on winning for New York State! Wishing them the best of luck as they will be competing for the National Title between June 14-18 in College Park, Maryland!

National History Day

When forty Sayville High School students from the Leadership Club visited Amityville High School in November as part of a Cultural Exchange program on Long Island, they spent the school day participating in classroom lessons and school-related activities from different geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic perspectives. The Sayville students expressed positive feedback about their day with their Amityville counterparts and looked forward to reciprocating, which was implicit in the Cultural Exchange plan. For Phase Two, the Amityville students would be invited in Spring for a visit to Sayville High School. In April, approximately forty Amityville students who were members of The Warrior Awareness Club, also known as the WAC PAC, spent the day at Sayville High School with the Leadership Club

for another day of sharing class lessons and related activities. As the students got off the Amityville bus, they were greeted with cheers and applause by the Sayville Leadership Club members and welcomed into the Senior Lounge for a Bagel Breakfast. The mingling over casual fare was actually a reunion of familiar faces from their previous fall encounter, and there was so much to share even before classes began. Leadership Club advisors Ms. Jennifer WittmanCahill and Angela O’Hoppe along with The Warrior Awareness Club advisor, Jason McGowan, were very pleased with the overall success. Mrs. O’Hoppe remarked, “It was great to hear the feedback from all of the students and to learn that their experience has elicited some true empathy.” Ms. Wittman-Cahill added, “I think students from both schools will remember the

experience for a lifetime.” The students also expressed a positive response overall. They commented on how two very different student bodies could possess similar strengths and weaknesses. They felt the majority of students were welcoming and kind. Participants were courageous enough to point out differences too. Students from Amityville as well as Sayville indicated that class time at Sayville involves more rules, focus, and learning while Amityville’s atmosphere was more friendly and inclusive. The advisors of both the Leadership Club and the WAC PAC hope to maintain this established relationship between schools so that other students can experience the cultural exchange and all it has to offer in the future!

Supporters from Stony Brook Medicine gathered with the family and friends of patients to celebrate hope – as symbolized by the pinwheels that a cure for ALS is ‘blowin in the wind.’ “ALS is a remarkable challenge to physicians and neuroscientists, but this is an exciting time in the Neurosciences and through research we continue to seek better treatments and hopefully a cure,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “We are all here today to join together in hope and strive to make ALS a tragedy of the past.” During the ceremony,

a $60,000 donation was announced to the Ride for Life on behalf of the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter. The funds will be used to support clinical services and research at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Keynote speaker Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs in the School of Medicine, had attendees join hands as a sign of unity to fight against ALS and hope for a cure. A recitation prayer by the Reverend Rich Allen of Sayville United Methodist Church added to the spirit of hope at the event. The ceremony closed with a jolt into the sky – as a 16-rocket launch salute took place. The “spirit salutes,” as they were referred to, symbolized the 16 lives lost to ALS every day.

RESPECT FOR ANIMALS - Connetquot Central School District Idle Hour Elementary School Director of Youth and Family Services, Ms. Lara McNally, recently welcomed Kira Dorn and her rescued pit bull, Indy, to talk to students about the proper care of animals. Dorn is the founder of Unchained New York, an organization that provides services for chained and neglected dogs throughout Long Island. The volunteer-run organization works to educate the community about the care of animals and seeks to break the cycle of animal abuse.

Academy Elementary School third grade students are seeking inspiration from renowned artist Georgia O’Keeffe for painting project with teacher Beverly Maier. In advance of the project,

ALS Awareness Day

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by Councilman Steve Flotteron, Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr., and Tax Receiver Alexis Weik, as well as countless members of the community to declare May 4th as ALS Awareness Day in the Town of Islip. ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis,

is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. This year’s ALS Rise for Life, a marathon spread across Long Island which helps to bring awareness to ALS, began in Greenport on April 27th and arrived at Islip Town Hall on the morning of May 4th. Town Officials

proclaimed May 4th as ALS Awareness Day in the Town of Islip and also honored town resident, Paul Weisman, for his organization of a recent Polar Plunge to raise awareness and funds for ALS, as well as the West Islip High School Honor Society, as they showed their support and walked in marathon.

SPRING MUSIC ASSEMBLY - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students performed their 2015 Spring Music Assembly for fellow students, teachers, family, staff and “grandfriends” from the Arbors’ Assisted Living facility. The Arbors residents interact with Connetquot students throughout the school year and are often invited to school performances. The 2015 Spring Music Assembly featured performances from the Edward J. A chorus of cheers and bagpipers could be heard as patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus in their power wheelchairs at the annual Ride for Life event. Stony Brook University athletes escorted the Riders who rode to Stony Brook to take part in the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony on May 2nd, the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair Ride for Life trek across Long Island that ends in Manhattan on May 9th. Christopher Pendergast, President and Founder of Ride for Life, and a 22-year ALS patient and advocate, led the way with six other ALS patients as they rode to the ceremony area, where 6,000 pinwheels were displayed. Congratulations to Sayville History Club members, Jared Bergen, Elias Kalomiris, Jack Novak, and Travis Brown who competed in the National Quiz Bowl in Washington, D.C. in late April and placed FIRST in their varsity bracket. The fierce competition

with 250 teams representing all fifty states consisted of ten Quiz Bowl rounds with forty questions. This is an amazing accomplishment for a fledgling team. In addition, Sayville’s Sophomore Anthony Pascarella competed in the Geography Olympiad and

placed in the top half on the written exam portion of the event. Both History Club Advisors Mr. Michael Pace and Mrs. Susan Hart are very proud of these amazing young men who opted to prepare and participate in these rigorous competitions.

integral part of the Earth Day Celebration were representatives of Keep Islip Clean (KIC), a not-forprofit, community service organization dedicated to keeping the Town of Islip looking beautiful. The event also showcased demonstrations from local companies including a solar panel company called GreenLeaf, which displayed a solar paneled mini house at eight feet wide, twenty feet long and thirteen feet high. Visitors could walk through and experience solar paneled living. A&A Sewer and Drain Maintenance had a display of an Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) which helps treat the wastewater from the septic tanks in an earth-friendly manner.

Fifty-nine Seventhgraders and four Eighthgraders earned their welldeserved recognition at the 2015 Sayville Middle School National Junior Honor Society annual candle-lighting induction ceremony. These industrious students have both maintained a grade average of 95 or above for four quarters as well as exemplified the five attributes - represented by five candles - of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship required to become a member of the prestigious National Junior Honor Society. Middle School Principal Thomas Murray and NJHS advisor Mrs. LloydMatthews were proud to welcome the inductees and their families for the

evening ceremony. Assisting with the celebration, Eighthgrade society members participated in various capacities: opening with the Pledge of Allegiance (Emily Manning), describing the five attributes: Scholarship (Eric Gustafson), Service (Hannah Rose Niggemeier), Leadership (Amy Tomko), Character (Sara Holmes), and Citizenship (Avery Rosado), announcing the inductees (Sierra Boyce, Simone Carniaux, Julia Kaczmarek, Abigail Sneddon), and lighting the symbolic candles (Madeline Recker). After all the new members received their certificates and handshakes from Mr. Murray on stage, they returned to their seats where current member Harrison Bench led the inductees in the NJHS pledge.

Closing the ceremony with parting words, Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews reminded the new members that they are required to continue upholding the attributes of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character as they complete their years at the Middle School, while Mr. Murray commended the students for bringing such pride to the Sayville Middle School community. Congratulations to all. NJHS is the leading organization that recognizes exceptional middle-level students who have successfully demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character throughout their Middle School years.

TAKING A TRIP - First grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently welcomed Christina Godfrey of the Long Island Center for the Arts & Sciences sponsored by the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School PTA. Sixty-five first grade students learned about the planets that make up the solar system through a multi-media presentation, Q&A session, games and hands-on projects. Students also had the opportunity to create a colorful craft project identifying the planets, which they took home to their parents.

DISABILITY AWARENESS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth grade students recently welcomed Mr. Lopez, owner of the Inclusive Sports and Fitness (ISF) gym, and students from Stony Brook University during an assembly which focused on disability awareness. The fifth grade students were shown the capabilities and characteristics people with disabilities have to be admired and respected. The assembly aimed to create awareness and sensitivity towards people with disabilities and for students to learn about the importance of support towards others.

NYSSMA PREP - Connetquot Central School District Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently performed for former New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) President, Mr. Marc Green, in preparation for the upcoming NYSSMA evaluations. The chorus, comprised of fourth and fifth grade students, performed three selections which will be included in their upcoming school concert as well as their NYSSMA evaluations.

Music To The Ears Connetquot Central School District OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Music Honor Society members recently met with students from every elementary school in the district to help them prepare for the upcoming New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Music Festival. The OBMS music students mentored the elementary students by assisting them in practicing their scales, solos and sight reading exercises.

NYSSMA is an organization that evaluates student musicians throughout the entire state of New York from elementary school to high school. Each spring, students register through their school music programs to attend the NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals where they are judged on a number of criteria like tone, technique, accuracy, interpretation and sight reading. Students can be evaluated for a myriad of

instruments including voice, piano, strings, woodwind/brasses and percussion. These festivals take place at local middle schools and high schools within the fifteen different NYSSMA zones. The day of mentoring not only fostered a sense of community between the students of the Connetquot Central School District but also strengthened the musical talent within the district.

A-TRAIN A-GAME - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary recently received a visit from a Harlem Wizards Basketball star. Arnold “A-Train” Bernard. The 5’6” handling legend, showed off his skills to the students while also teaching them some ball-spinning tricks. A New York native and former ‘Globetrotter,’ Bernard visits many schools to share his skills. He encouraged all the students to attend the game where Connetquot School District teachers compete against the Wizards.

LITERACY LUAU - Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School librarians recently hosted the 4th Annual Literacy Luau. Over 1,000 students, teachers, administrators and family members enjoyed various exhibits, games, music and creative activities. Over 15 children’s book authors attended the Literacy Luau to sign copies and talk about their books. Groups of students created colorful poster art COURTYARD DEDICATED - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti of their favorite books, while others played literary bingo and Jeopardy. Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden, joined students and teachers for the re-dedication of the school’s Courtyard Classroom. Following a generous donation from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children, four outdoor combination bench/tables were purchased and placed in the courtyard at Edward J.
