Sachem High School East Hosts Museum Walk

The Sachem High School East Diversity Club recently held a museum walk with socially distant exhibits featuring information and activities from various cultures around the world. The museum exhibits created by the club’s outstanding effort featured

countries including China, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal and Taiwan. Among the activities on the museum walk were Chinese yo-yo and Irish step-dancing lessons, as well as games from each culture that students could play at each exhibit.

different settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, schools and funeral parlors,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “Designating April 30 as Pet Therapy Day is our way of saying thank you and recognizing all the good these animals and their handlers do to bring moments of joy to people in need in our community, especially given the difficulties of the last year.” According to the Mayo Clinic, the term pet therapy encompasses both animalassisted therapy and more casual animal-assisted activities. In animal-assisted therapy, dogs and other animals are used to help people recover from or cope with physical conditions, such as heart disease or cancer, or mental health conditions, such as stress, anxiety and depression. Therapy animals and their handlers can be found visiting schools, hospitals, pediatric care units, airports, the court systems, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities as well as libraries and psychiatrist/ psychologist offices. “The health and emotional benefits of pet therapy are well documented and I am grateful for the comfort and healing these animals and their handlers bring to our communities,” said

Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn, a co-sponsor of the resolution to designate Pet Therapy Day in Suffolk County. “Sometimes nothing warms the soul more than a loving wet nose and some slobber.” Legislator Sarah Anker, who also co-sponsored the resolution, added, “I am happy to co-sponsor designating April 30th as Pet Therapy Day here in Suffolk County. This year has brought many challenges to our community and our residents, including learning how to cope through the pandemic. Therapy pets have helped improve the mental health and well-being of many residents, so it was important to acknowledge and thank all of Suffolk County’s therapy animals and their handlers for their service to our residents, especially during these challenging times.” According to Pet Partners, growing evidence supports the idea that the humananimal bond has a positive impact on wellness. Thousands of pet therapy teams serve communities across the country. “There is something special about the unconditional love of a dog, and having brought therapy dogs to visit groups and individuals across Long

Suffolk Community College Board Freezes Tuition for Second Consecutive Year For the second consecutive year, Suffolk County Community College’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to freeze tuition at the State University of New York’s largest community college, citing the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and strain it has put on students, their families, and finances. The Board adopted a $208 million College operating budget at its monthly meeting for the 2021-22 academic year that includes no tuition increase and represents a $5 million reduction in expenditures

from 2020-21. Additionally, fees will also remain flat or in some cases be reduced. “By freezing tuition and fees, we are not only prioritizing students, but working to ensure cost is not a barrier to receiving a quality and affordable education,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone in reaction to the Board’s vote. “Facing unprecedented pandemic-driven revenue losses we are committed to remain the affordable, high quality, accessible resource for Suffolk residents that we have always been,” said Suffolk County Community

College Board of Trustees Chair E. Christopher Murray. We know many are unexpectedly out of work and others are looking for convenient, close-tohome options to pursue their college education. Suffolk County Community College is and will continue to be here for them,” Murray said. Murray said the College faced a more than $2.5 million budget hole resulting from an enrollment decline and the resulting loss of tuition, and pandemic driven costs and reductions in state aid. College Board of Trustees

Budget and Finance Chair Kevin M. O’Connor said sound fiscal management combined with belttightening initiatives, as well as staff reductions through attrition, not filling vacant lines, reconfiguring course sections to be more efficient and the College’s workers who voluntarily agreed to wage and benefit reductions helped ensure that Suffolk County Community College will continue to be an affordable, premier provider of higher education and workforce training. “Freezing tuition and reducing fees are tangible

manifestations of the trustees’ and our county partner’s commitment to our most important mission, the futures of our students,” said Jim Morgo, vice chair of the Board of Trustees. “The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Suffolk students particularly hard,” O’Connor said. “The Board of Trustees recognizes that we cannot ask our students and their families to shoulder a greater share of the burden during this tough time. Suffolk County lawmakers unanimously approved a proposal by Presiding Officer Rob Calarco to designate April 30 as “Pet Therapy Day” in Suffolk County. To mark the passage of the proposal, Presiding Officer Calarco joined Smithtownbased Therapy Dogs of Long Island during the nonprofit’s visit to Fort Salonga Elementary School, where the Presiding Officer and the nonprofit spent the morning with students and a fourlegged friend named Ken. April 30 has been recognized nationally as a day to celebrate therapy animals through the efforts of Pet Partners, the nation’s leading organization registering therapy animals for animal-assisted interventions. Presiding Officer Calarco felt it was important to mark the day on the county level to recognize the local groups working to improve the health and well-being of Suffolk residents through animal-assisted therapy and activities. Legislators approved his resolution to designate Pet Therapy Day in Suffolk County at the legislature’s April 20 General Meeting. “Therapy animals and their human companions bring joy and healing to people of all ages in many

Sayville Girls Varsity Tennis Wins League III/Division Title, first time since 2009

Story by Linda Mittiga Coming off a great season for Sayville Girls Varsity Tennis, Coach Stephen Aronson reported that the Girls won the League III/Division title, their first win since 2009. “We have our entire starting lineup going to counties, “Coach Aronson said. “I’m pretty sure this is a first in school history.

Undefeated regular season (12-0), Mary Madigan and Abby Breen are the number 1 and 2 singles seeds respectively to represent our division at counties, along with Kylie Person (3rd singles) and Meredith Albertelli (4th singles). The doubles teams for Sayville at counties are Jenna Guerra/Sasha Gagnon (number 1), Sara

Jaklitsch/Riley Lapine (number 3) and Kate Leigh-Manuell/Karishma Patel (number 4). We haven’t had an All-State Tennis player since 2011, when one of the athletes on the Boys Team was allstate. These accomplishments resulted in the girls competing at the Counties.

The Sayville Music Education program first received this accolade in 2004 and has won it consecutively for the past twelve years. NAMM’s Best Communities for Music Education designation, now in its 22nd year, is awarded to districts that demonstrate o u t s t a n d i n g achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Sayville Music Department

answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community musicmaking programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. You can expect to ﬁnd beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selﬂess efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

South Country Central School District’s Music Program Receives National Recognition

For the eighth consecutive year, the South Country Central School District has been designated by the NAMM Foundation as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education for its outstanding commitment to music education and for demonstrating outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and advances active participation in music. To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education designation, the district

answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “The music program here at South Country has continued to provide students with a wellrounded education from kindergarten to the 12th grade,” said District Music Chairperson Victoria Hartman. “This award recognizes the commitment our teachers, administration and

community make toward a child’s educational, cognitive, emotional and social skill development by way of a strong music education program.” Ms. Hartman explained that during the pandemic, school districts like South Country have recommitted to their already stellar music education programs, which provide valuable ways to keep students engaged. Bellport High School junior and vocalist Emma Butler described the importance of music in her life. “Music is important to me because it provides me with an outlet to express myself throughout the school day,” Emma noted. Bellport High School

Principal Timothy Hogan expressed his deep pride in the district’s music program. “Even during these turbulent times, our teachers have provided a supportive and meaningful experience for our students,” Mr. Hogan said. “I look forward to a return in normalcy in the years ahead but am thankful for the opportunities and experiences provided to our students in the interim.”
