Jones Beach Air Show Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are very pleased to announce the star-studded final lineup for the 2016 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, May 28th and Sunday, May 29th, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. For the first time, three jet teams will perform at the Bethpage Air Show including show headliners,

the legendary United States Navy Blue Angels, returning to the Bethpage Air Show for their seventh performance during their 70th anniversary season. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will give the final performance of the show at approximately 2 p.m. The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be making their 3rd performance at the Bethpage Air Show where they will perform over 50 different formations and maneuvers for fans. The last of the

three jet teams to perform is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s elite professional civilian jet aerobatics team, returning to Long Island for their second consecutive performance following a successful performance last year. The new United States Air Force F-35 Lightning II, the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, will also perform at the Bethpage Air Show for the first time in its inaugural year its F-35 Heritage Flight

performance. The F-35 Heritage Flight performance will feature the F-35 flying alongside WWII, Korean and Vietnam-era aircraft in a dynamic display of our nation’s air power history. With a top speed of 1,200 mph, the F-35 is capable of setting off sonic booms as it did this past January for all of the East Coast to experience! Other star-studded performers at this year’s Bethpage Air Show include the United States Army

Golden Knights Parachute Team, performing in their 12th Bethpage Air Show; legendary air show pilot Sean Tucker performing in his custom-built Oracle Challenger II biplane; extraordinary aerobatic pilot Matt Chapman; the John Klatt Airshows – Jack Links’ Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team; the world famous GEICO Skytypers and their flight squadron of six vintage WWII aircraft; the American Airpower Museum Warbirds;

One-Act Festival Bayport-Blue Point High School talented studentactors presented the Drama Club’s ninth annual One Act Play Festival this spring in the auditorium. During the event, students performed three plays, including one written by junior Lena Diaz. Lena wrote, cast and directed her first production, “And the One Who Did It Is… Wait Till the End!” After the performance, Lena had a question and answer

session with audience members about her process and intentions. The other shows featured during the event included “Bad Auditions by Bad Actors” and “The Internet is Distract - Oh Look, a Kitten!,” both by published playwright Ian McWethy. This year’s actors included seniors Justin Martinez and Darren Plante, juniors Devin Bressler, Lena Diaz, Sean Hickey and

Helen Johannesman, sophomores Nezaket Arabaci and Shannon Conrad, and freshmen Gia Bono, Elizabeth Johannesman and Lauren Rodriguez. Crew members who supported the cast were Anna Kearns, Sarah Koerner, Sidney Okray and Madeline Silecchia. Teacher advisers are Ms. Eberhard and Ms. Pearce. Former student Jamie Oswald is the stage manager.

Practice Makes Purr-fect Fire Island School District’s Woodhull Elementary School’s concert band recently participated in a “Practicea-Thon” to benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and ended up raising nearly $500 for the nonprofit organization. The funds were raised entirely by four sixthgraders, Toby Heslin, Brooke Lambie, Casey

Cole and Eli Finnick, with nearly half the funds coming from Lambie alone. The students, who practiced over a three-week period, found sponsors among family and the community, who agreed to donate at a rate per minute. Music teacher Mr. Philip Tamberino coordinated the issuance of receipts and thankyou notes as well as the delivery of proceeds to the

ASPCA, whose fundraising team provided a web page to track the progress of the project. The ASPCA was selected as a beneficiary based on a majority vote of students after exploring various causes to support, and participation in the activity was voluntary. Proceeds will be used by the ASPCA in its effort to rescue, place and protect as many animals in need as possible.

Jump Rope for Heart Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students, staff, parents and teachers recently came together to fight heart disease by participating in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart initiative. Jump Rope for Heart

is an American Heart Association program which encourages healthier living, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and

support research to fight heart problems. Students raised money by pledging to participate in the Jump Rope for Heart event and asking their family and friends to donate to the American Heart Association.

started a NYS learner’s permit training and testing program in his class. Students sit at a computer in the classroom which links to the NYSDMV online test. Three months ago, Matthew, a Comsewogue UFSD student, secured employment at Uncle Giuseppe’s in Port Jefferson. Matthew has an entry level position. He does parking lot maintenance, collects carts, and helps people find things in the store. He found the job on SnagAJob.com and completed an online application. “We looked for a job related to the skills he is learning in the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program,” said Abel. Matthew’s mom drives Matthew and picks him up from work. Matthew has his learner’s

permit and will be taking his road test in April. He said, “I like working at Uncle Giuseppe’s. I’m nervous about taking my driving test. I hope I pass. It will make it easier if I can drive myself to work.” Matthew has another goal, to obtain a forklift certification, which is also offered in Abel’s class. “I feel that having that ability, that skill, will help me advance at work,” Matthew said. Abel said, “It’s important that our students transition from school to successful employment. Having the ability to get a learner’s permit right in the classroom and then secure a job with the skills that lead to employment supports the vision of our school and the mission of the ESBOCES agency.”

Five students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center’s Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program completed their learner’s permit training and passed the New York State Learner’s Permit Test in the comfort of their classroom. Teacher Ken Able was encouraged by Principal Pete LePore to “think out of the box” and find ways to include training and testing skills that would lead to employment for the special career education students. used multi-media materials and demonstrated how learning another language can be useful and fun. The goal of this collaboration was to enrich the 5th graders understanding of the culture, geography and worldwide use of the French language. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently invited a group of elementary school students to Town Hall to congratulate them on their recent success in the FIRST Lego League Tournament. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Tournament asks competitors to construct mobile ‘robots’ that can perform simple tasks. The students, from Bayport’s Academy Street Elementary School, were among the youngest competitors in the entire

School District dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students in 4th and 5th grades. Over the course of C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages program including French, Spanish, Connetquot Central Italian and German School District’s Idle languages and culture. Hour Elementary School students recently spread springtime cheer by assembling flower pots for senior citizens at the Bohemia Arbors Assisted Living facility. Students in each

Despite competing against middleschoolers, these students finished 6th out of 40 teams in the championship tournament. “We’re so proud of these students and everything they have achieved,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “They made the effort to keep learning about science and technology outside of the classroom, and this dedication paid off at the FIRST competition. We’re looking forward to their future projects.” The theme for the 2016

championship was “Trash Trek,” and concerned recycling. The team, known the Brainstormers, toured Covanta, the Islip Recycling Center and the Islip Town Compost Facility in preparation for the tournament. The team learned how there are more people on Long Island who do not participate in recycling than those who do participate. The Brainstormers created a home recycler machine, called “The Recycler”, to eliminate the storage and mess of recycled materials in the home.

Springtime Cheer grade level contributed decorations including colorful cutouts of bees, ladybugs, butterflies, petals and flowers. The flower pots were made of recycled empty milk cartons to celebrate Earth Day. By the end of the students’ visit they had made over a

dozen new grandfriends at Bohemia Arbors Assisted Living and brought smiles to the senior citizens’ faces. This event was part of a district initiative to teach students how to give back to the community and express themselves in creative, productive ways.
