Town of Islip officials held a public hearing that was attended by hundreds, who turned out both in favor of, or in opposition to, the proposed Heartland Town Square project. The Heartland Town Square proposal involves the development of the former Pilgrim State site into a mixed-use space, containing commercial, retail and residential areas, in what developers are calling a “self-contained community.” Over 144 members of the public

registered to voice their opinions on the proposal at the meeting, adding to the roughly 1,600 comments submitted online through the Town’s website. “This is one of the most important decisions to ever come before the Islip Town Board, and we have to ensure that the public is given every chance to be heard,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Last night we heard spirited comments from people and groups representing all interested parties,

Heartland Proposal which is how the process is supposed to work in our Town.” The submission period for online comments has ended. However, anyone wishing to submit any additional comments may do so by mail through the end of business, May 15th, by mailing or delivering to the Islip Town Clerk at: Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, Islip, NY 11751. All comments received will be entered into the public record.

St. John the Baptist DHS Junior Michael McKenna of Blue Point has received a distinctive award, being named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist for 2017-2018. Students who are selected as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists score in the top 96th percentile of all students who take the PSAT exam. Two St. John’s Seniors, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack and Dominick Rich of Bay Shore, were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists as well. Sachin will attend Cornell University in the fall while Dominick plans to attend Johns Hopkins University.

Senior Public Health Educator John Martin and Director of School Health Education Nancy Hemendinger, MPA, brought an interactive and informational presentation “Being an Upstander” to the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC). Students from 22 different Special Career Education programs at ICC participated in either the morning or afternoon session. The presentation began on a serious note as Hemendinger spoke about bullying and how people should move from silence, a bystander, to action, an upstander. She showed the students a short video Out of the Shadows about body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. “Be careful not

to judge; we all need to work on that. Also, people get into the habit of putting themselves down but you need to love yourself,” she said. The resounding message was, don’t judge, we are all in this together, and beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and sexualities. Martin launched into his portion of the presentation by tossing beach balls into the audience. Words of encouragement such as ‘you are amazing’ were written on them. He lit up the room with his positive energy, persuading all the students to participate in a variety of interactive activities. He asked the students to pledge participation in the group games, even if they felt awkward and silly, because

‘we will all do it together and we will all feel awkward together like one, big, awkward, silly Islip Career Center family.’ They got to know each other through a game Martin devised. Everyone formed a circle and one-byone each student said their name, everyone responded and said “Hi,” then the student shared what they liked to do, and the group said “Nice.” It was an icebreaking activity that served to introduce the students to each other and pay compliments. Martin said, “Kindness is a behavior that we all need to practice. Recognizing a person and affirming what they said is important and kind.”

RECYCLING EVENT - On April 8th, Councilman Kevin LaValle hosted his first “3 in 1” recycling event of the year in Council District 3 in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven’s Waste Management Department. During the event, which was held at the Sachem Public Library, 11,860 lbs of paper was collected. The Town also collected 12 full boxes of pharmaceuticals, 7,878 lbs. of electronics for recycling. Sixth grade students from the Jefferson Academic Center paid tribute to Earth Day by volunteering their time and energy at a local garden. Special Education Teacher Anna Cuevas said, “We offered our services and volunteered to help beautify the Port Jefferson Village Center garden.” Students weeded the garden, and planted seeds and flowers. Cuevas said the students would monitor the garden on a regular basis to see how the plants

were developing. It was an exciting opportunity for the students to help out the environment and contribute to the Port Jefferson Beautification Project. They were honored to receive a Thank You plaque for all their efforts. Lessons about Earth Day began with researching the origin of Earth Day to understand why we celebrate the day each April. Students learned that Earth Day is celebrated to demonstrate support for environmental protection. They participated in

a variety of activities including writing poems and delving into science activities to learn and understand plant growth and development. *The academic program at the Jefferson Academic Center is available to special education and nonclassified “at risk” students who require an alternate approach to learning. The students have moderate to severe learning disabilities, and Autism Spectrum disorders.

Leading the Way Connetquot High School is proud to announce the top 25 students for the graduating senior Class of 2017 - a high honor based on the students’ achievements and scholarly dedication throughout their academic careers. Included in the list of outstanding scholars are Class of 2017 valedictorian Mit Patel and salutatorian Anthony Mannino. During his years at Connetquot High School, Mit was integral in creating the school’s Science Olympiad team and was an active member of the Model UN, Interact and Habitat for Humanity Clubs. He has committed himself to studying at Harvard University this fall, where he will be

majoring in biochemistry. Mit plans to continue to be active in the scientific field and hopes to join one of the many science research based clubs along with politically-based clubs. Throughout his studies at Connetquot High School, Anthony has been a part of the Science Research Club, for which he won a third-place award in the Hydrogeology category at a recent competition. Additionally, he is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and plays trumpet in the school marching band. He has committed himself to attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a major in physics. While attending RPI, Anthony plans to engage in physics-

based research and become involved with the school’s debate team and politicallybased clubs. An “Escape Room” specifically designed for the younger set was a recent enrichment activity offered to Third through Sixth graders, thanks to Sayville High School’s Forensics Team and science teacher/Forensic Team Club advisor Sally Stoll-DePompeo. The “Escape Room Game,” often called Breakout, is a themebased, life-sized game of challenge held in a closed environment embedded with clues. educational escape-room activity,” explained Sally Stoll-DePompeo. “The Forensics Team decided to host this enrichment activity based on the theme of climate change for elementary-aged students in the district. There was no cost for attendance; we merely requested a free-will donation of nonperishable food items for the local food bank.” The grade-school students who signed on for the enrichment activity learned the value of teamwork during the course of the game. They put their heads together and dealt with each step of the challenge thoughtfully on their journey to the solution. Hints were available if the students needed a nudge here and there to get past a difficult

clue. “I was so impressed by the fifth-grade group. They worked hard to solve the Room without using any hints! They were awesome!” Having an aptitude for computer literacy and reading comprehension along with good observational skills were important, but being willing players ready to adapt to each clue brought genuine excitement to the game. In the end, each of the teams solved the clues and puzzles that helped them open the locks on a box containing the answer to the negative effects of climate change. “All of the teams were able to break out in time,” Mrs. Stoll-DePompeo said. “Congratulations to all!”

The school’s library was transformed into a Ye Olde Arts & Crafts center and Food Court, inviting students to write with quill feathers, design their own masquerade masks and play board games inspired by the Elizabethan era. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - The Islip Town Board recently held its annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring students from across the Town in a range of subjects. The students had to demonstrate that their success in a subject went above and beyond what is normally expected of a student. The Town Board members thanked the students for their hard work, and thanked the parents and teachers as well who have succeeded alongside the students.

Careers Program at Islip Career Center (ICC) were visited by Marine Corps veteran Amanda Donald, a representative of Paws for War and Guardians of Rescue. Amanda is personally familiar with Paws for War because she and her husband have two dogs that have been certified as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) service dogs. The dogs have been trained to perform tasks, assist in a medical crisis, and improve the quality of life for both veterans and non-veterans. Donald brought two puppies, Catahoula Leopard

The Sayville High School History Club, advised by Social Studies teacher Susan Hart and Michel Pace, continues to be very active with communityservice and volunteer programs, informational field trips to both local and national historic sites, and school-awareness activities. Recently, during Human Rights Month, the History Club focused on the topic of human trafficking and attempted

to bring an awareness of this important issue to the entire High School community. History Club Secretary Hanna Decker explained: “The Club created a Powerpoint presentation and went into classrooms telling students about the prevalence of human trafficking and what we can do to help stop it. The Club also decorated the school with posters and black chains emphasizing the need to ‘break the

chain.’ Outside the cafeteria, the History Club members set up a table where they collected donations. These proceeds went towards Long Island Against Human Trafficking, a local organization that focuses on this issue on the island. All in all, the Club raised $300 and was extremely successful in raising awareness about this horrific issue currently plaguing the world.”

Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.
