Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those ﬂip ﬂops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the ﬂoral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be ﬂourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Students in the social welfare policy class at Misericordia University recently traveled to Harrisburg to participate in the National Association of Social Workers Pennsylvania (NASW-PA) Legislative Education and Advocacy Day. The students, accompanied by David Hage, M.S.W., L.S.W., L.C.S.W., director of field education, met with state Sen. Lisa Baker, R-20, Lehman Township, and attended a Pennsylvania Senate legislative session. They were among more than 700 social work students and professionals from across the state that gathered to advocate for legislation that is

relevant to the social work profession. Among the pieces of legislation they discussed was Senate Bill 65, which would forgive student loans of Commonwealth residents who use their degrees to work in child welfare. Proponents say the bill will help address recruitment and retention of social workers and ensure that competent, qualified workers continue protecting Pennsylvania’s children. They also addressed the need for Senate Bill 530, which would amend the Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors Act to create practice protection and update

FIRST® Tech Challenge Team #5477, “Innovo” from Hewlett; Team #4137, the “Island Bots” from East Setauket; and Team #9421 the “Hydroﬂuoric Robotics” from Greenlawn; each competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge SuperRegional Championship in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th. These teams earned the chance to compete at that post-season event following the FIRST Tech Challenge SBPLI Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 9th. A total of 15 FIRST® Robotics Competition teams will represent Long Island at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 25th-28th. Included among them is Team #810, the “Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown, which won the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition #2 on Saturday, April 14th, along with the event’s coveted Chairman’s Award and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. Foreign Language Honor Society In recognition of their outstanding academic performances throughout their careers in the Spanish, French and Italian languages, 51 student members of the Connetquot High School Foreign Language Honor Society were recognized during a High Honors and Awards Presentation held on April 17th at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. Foreign Language Honor Society advisers Adriana DeFelice, Eileen McGinnis and Cheryl Sosa were joined by Connetquot Central School District Director of World Languages/ English as a New Language Denise Hannaoui, and they congratulated the students on their multiple achievements thus far. Each student had the opportunity to say a few words about their experiences, and

to comment on their fellow students, as they distributed certificates to one another. Achievements in Literacy The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its seventh annual Library Literacy Celebration at Connetquot High School, inviting district staff, administrators, students and their families to witness a culmination of literary displays and projects from students of all district elementary schools. Throughout the halls of the high school, various makerspace tables were

lined up for students to engage in, containing activities such as teambased poetry, creating artwork from their thumb prints and designing illustrations with assistance from students of Connetquot High School’s art program. In the auditorium, audience members were treated to a special presentation from alumni John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski, authors of the popular nonfiction work “A

Speck in the Sea,” which chronicles Mr. Aldridge’s tragic experience while working on a fishing boat off the coast of Long Island. A d d i t i o n a l l y, representatives from the Connetquot Public Library were on hand to speak to students and their families about the important benefits of reading a good book, as was Alyssa Gangeri, children’s author of the “Mimi’s Adventures” baking book series.

The Sgt John Basilone Lodge #2442, Sons & Daughters of Italy, recently visited the Stony Brook Veterans Home to entertain the residents. The lodge is totally non-profit and dedicated to raising funds for several charities including Wounded Warriors, Cooleys Anemia, St. Judes Hospital, Gift of Sight and others. The lodge is named after the highly decorated World War ll veteran, Sgt.

John Basilone. Members strive to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces. The event was organized by Luisa Potenza, Culture Chair for the lodge. Luisa felt the need to do this because of the loss of her husband, who was at the Stony Brook Home during his illness. She said she also lost a granddaughter who thought of her grandfather as her “hero.” Luisa states, “They say

music has magical powers.” It was proven as several members of the lodge and renowned accordionist, Dominic Karcic led the residents in song. Veterans of World War ll, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, were seen waving their hands and tapping their feet to the music. Luisa is hopeful to continue to bring joy to these American heroes.

Six Sachem High School North science research students making up two teams recently worked to expand their genetics knowledge through the Barcode Long Island program. The program, led by the American Museum for National History, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University, aims to enhance student understanding of the interdependence between humans and the natural environment. Each team of Sachem students developed a

project to investigate biodiversity on Long Island and submitted a written proposal to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for its annual symposium. Once accepted, the studentscientists took to the field to collect water quality data and biological specimens. Students then recently utilized the genetics lab at Stony Brook University to complete gel electrophoresis before sending the DNA samples out to be sequenced. Students worked alongside professional geneticists to extract and amplify DNA from almost 40 organisms.

Through the Barcode Long Island program students gain an authentic science research experience harnessing the capabilities of genetics labs they would not otherwise have access to until college. Following the student research, each team will create a poster that will be presented to peers and professionals at the annual symposium held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center. Last year, a team of Sachem students discovered two organisms that have never been sequenced for DNA before.

Renowned children’s poet/author Darren Sardelli recently met with all students at Blue Point Elementary School for an informative literacythemed assembly, sharing important tips and tricks on how to have fun with writing along the way. Mr. Sardelli first addressed the students by asking if they were familiar with the works of both Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss, to which they

happily responded that they were. Additionally, he shared original lines of poetry with the students, all of which featured lines which were both creative and humorous, and encouraged the students to write their own poems when an idea struck them. “Write down your ideas, save ideas and do something special with your favorite idea,” said Mr. Sardelli. At the conclusion

of his presentation, students were invited into the school’s library for a workshop session in which they created original stories and poems with assistance from Mr. Sardelli. Mr. Sardelli is the author of the popular children’s book “Galaxy Pizza and Meteor Pie,” and has had his poems published in a number of other of children’s poetry collections.

Idle Hour Visit Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III recently paid the third-grade students of Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District a visit to discuss the importance of voting and what it’s like to work within the New York State government.

The students were first asked by Lindsay what were the three branches of government, to which they correctly answered by quickly stating judicial, legislative and executive. During the course of his visit, students learned the process for passing a law, and took part in a fun activity – which

choice they would prefer: no school on Friday or no homework during the week. After a heated debate between the opposing sides, the students came to a respectful conclusion that they would prefer there be no homework issued, alongside a full, five-day week of school.

This cyberbullying peer-topeer prevention program brings awareness about the growing cyberbullying epidemic to communities like Sayville and provides workshops, resources and tools that can assist students, teachers and school administrators to combat it. When Alyssa Lofaro, Sayville HS grad and Siena College student, approached her alma mater about holding the program here, Sayville High School Assistant Principal Jillian Makris and the High School’s Student Assistance Counselor Martha Kahan agreed this motivational program would provide the Sayville students with yet another worthwhile opportunity to reinforce the many classroom lessons and general assemblies on bullying. During the two-day program held at Sayville High School, the high school students interacted with trained Siena College students— including Alyssa - to learn how to be an Upstander. “Upstander” describes the stance a bystander can take when witnessing bullying or cyberbullying attacks. Upstanders are encouraged to speak up, notify an adult or interrupt the negative behavior they

are witnessing. Through the workshops facilitated by the Siena College ambassadors, twenty-four Sayville students were selected to participate and instructed how to be an effective Upstander. These workshops included peerto peer conversations and role-playing exercises and concluded with the students taking the Upstander Oath. By the end of the twoday program, the Siena facilitators and the newly trained Sayville students conducted a school-wide assembly program to share best practices, build awareness of the danger of cyberbullying and promote the Upstander behavior and culture. From the AT&T and Siena Upstander Program Press Release: The AT&T and Siena Upstander Program grows out of the Upstate Cyberbullying Census survey conducted in late 2016 by the Siena College Research Institute, AT&T and the Tyler Clementi Foundation that measured the prevalence of cyberbullying among students, the awareness of this crisis among parents, and parents’ understanding of their children’s digital behaviors in New York. The staggering data from the study revealed more than 1 in 4 students in Upstate New York and another study indicated nearly half of all students in the New

York City area have been a target of cyberbullying. Those statistics, combined with feedback from schools requesting cyberbullying prevention programming, led AT&T, the Tyler Clementi Foundation and the Siena to collaborate on this public education campaign. Working with the Tyler Clementi Foundation and Common Sense Media, AT&T has made addressing the rise of cyberbullying a priority. “The impact of cyberbullying on our youth has become pervasive and alarming. We simply can’t allow this crisis to destroy more lives and families,” said Marissa Shorenstein, president, AT&T-Northeast Region. “In efforts to curb this negative behavior, AT&T has collaborated with leading organizations within the cyberbullying space to develop programs, including the AT&T and Siena Upstander Program, to give parents, educators and students the tools to combat this epidemic and help facilitate a dialogue that will to lead positive change in our communities.”

Mathematics Competition Based on their commitment to higher learning, 15 Connetquot High School students recently attended Nassau Community College’s 18th annual Yes 2 Mathematics workshops and mathematics competition, as hosted by the mathematics and computer science departments at NCC.

During their time spent there, the students attended either a LINUX operating system or a day of Cyber mini-courses, along with data workshops on baseball, biometric, earthquake, marathon, payment, soccer, test and visualizing. Additionally, the students participated in a mathematics-based

competition along with other school districts from both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Participants Brady Ferguson, Tyler Hane, Dan Haughie, Jessica Chau and Giridhar Mula secured the firstplace title, while Michael Vincente, Thomas Szostak, Albert Ang and Dominic Manicone took home third place.

Alternative Discussion In preparation to their upcoming field trip to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Manhattan, the students enrolled at ESBOCES Regional Alternative High School at Connetquot High School received a special visit from John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation, and fellow first responder James Palmer for an assembly on the rescue and

recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the collapse of the World Trade Center. Both Mr. Feal and Mr. Palmer spoke with great passion about the events that transpired following September 11th, 2001 and their commitment to help make a difference for the survivors. As a result of John Feal’s efforts through the FealGood Foundation, federal and state legislation

has been passed to provide health care and compensation to first responders who worked on the site, and their families. The students along with their principal Louise Burger, who is also the district director of mathematics, also participated in a question and answer session with the visitors.
