The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.
If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Long Island Chapter Vice President and Public Relations Officer (Big D) at bigd@li-ny. bacaworld.org.
The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Students, faculty and staff at Hiawatha Elementary School recently participated in a buildingwide reading initiative that fostered a collective love for learning through the Andrew Clements book, “Frindle.” One Book, One School is an annual initiative at
Hiawatha that provides each student and staff member with a copy of the same book to read. This year’s book, “Frindle,” is about a boy who renames a pen a “frindle” and it eventually becomes a new word in the dictionary. In celebration of the initiative, Hiawatha hosted
a family event organized by librarian Kim Walker and art teacher Nicole Healy where students and their family members created invisible ink, bookmarks and made new words in addition to other engaging activities.
Technology Creates Connections Curriculum connections were plentiful for students at Sachem High School North during a recent visit from the Sachem Public Library, as students engaged in several activities utilizing highand low-tech educational tools. During science and math classes, students across grade levels experimented with
educational technologies that emphasized science, technology, engineering and math. Students used Magical Magnets to create three-dimensional figures, structures and shapes in addition to testing their design abilities using Strawbees and Legos. Exploring more complex technologies, students used the Autodesk program to improve their freehand

drawing skills and fuel interests in digital art. Additionally, students tried on virtual reality headsets and used iPads to control mBot robots. The visit from the public library allowed students to explore current curriculum concepts using a versatile selection of educational materials.

In a first-time Musical Production at Cherry Avenue--sponsored by the PTA--Elementary Students in Sayville School District Perform The Wizard of Oz. We’ve all grown up on it. Who doesn’t know by heart the 1939 Metro-GoldwynMayer musical film The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland? It is the most familiar version (unlike other remakes, more recently The Wiz, Wicked, OZ the Great and Powerful) taken from the original story by Frank Baum. Generations of viewers can sing the songs and recite the famous lines. So it makes perfect sense that The Wizard of Oz: The Youth Edition production trims the musical into the most manageable and memorable scenes for a new generation of young performers. And each of the Cherry Avenue students played their iconic parts awesomely, as if they were born to it! From the perfectly
plucky Dorothy, performed by Bridget Spreckels, to the lively Toto (Chloe Norman), the gracious Glinda (Casey Rosica), the humble Scarecrow (Ryan Walker), the melancholy Tin Man (Hunter Peralsky), the fraidy-cat Lion (Henry Reiss), the wickedly Wicked Witch (Kate D’Andrea), the great pretender Wizard– Mr. Marvel (Benjamin Richards), all were as wonderful as …now listen to the song lyrics…the wonderful Wizard of Oz! Ancillary roles that just couldn’t be forgotten included Eliana Lee as Auntie Em, Joey Donovan as Uncle Henry, Rachel Frawley as Miss Gulch, and Zachary Sanges as the Doorman-Guard. With over a hundred players as either munchkins (K-2 students) or in the ensemble (see the program attached), audiences were absolutely charmed. After presenting exuberant characterizations and impersonations of the
classic film, the Cherry Avenue performers brought the production home with the always touching reunion scene, reaffirming that “There’s no place like home!” Special kudos to Directors Miss Jackie and Miss Jess from The Production Over the Rainbow Theatre Company and their production staff for doing a magical job coordinating the cast and crew. And special thanks go to “The real Wizard” (to quote the program) Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne, PTA parent producers Mary Dolan and Kelly Darling, along with the PTA parent volunteers and student helpers whose tireless assistance contributed to a most successful PTA Fundraiser event. The Cherry Avenue PTA was so encouraged by this firsttime theatrical production, they are looking forward to staging another next year.
50 Years of Culture & Education In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of OakdaleBohemia Middle School, students of all grade levels recently took part in a number of exciting activities geared toward celebrating the history of the school’s half-century of existence. This past January, members of the school’s social studies staff asked if they could create a historical research project for their students to teach them about the history of the school. The sixth-grade teachers proposed having students look at artifacts from a time capsule in the building, as well as observing trends from 1969 to present day by reviewing yearbooks from the past. In doing so, the teachers set up the artifacts from the capsule in library like an archeological dig on a table. Students rotated
through several tables with yearbooks by decade and reviewed particular areas such as sports, fashion, clubs and activities during their time spent on the activity. Seventh-grade students decided to present an oral history lesson, and reached out to former teachers, students and administration through social media to see if they’d come to the school to speak to the students. The students then created questions related to school rules, lunch, structure of the sports teams, attire for students, etc. and presented their findings during a highly informative PowerPoint presentation. For their aspect of the celebration, eighthgraders decided to have students investigate the history of the school. The young historians looked at
factual information such as the original blueprints for the building, reviewed why the school was built on this property, the population at that time, cost of food and household products, jobs in the area and the average salary at the time. The OBMS staff worked closely with library media specialist Mairead McInnes, Assistant to the Superintendent John Allen and the Connetquot Library in order to obtain historical records for students to review. The district would also like to thank OakdaleBohemia Middle School Principal Susanne Baily, Assistant Principal Joe Piombo and social studies teachers Dr. Carmela Gustafson and Robert Burger for setting up the logistics for this exciting and meaningful project for the students.

Four students from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the inaugural OYO Hackathon/ Code Conquest which took place at Mineola Middle School on April 12. The four studentrepresentatives from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School –Akshat Kamboj, Shawn Kovarik, Tyler Ramos and Sameer Umar – were joined by students
from Bellmore-Merrick, Eastport South Manor, East Williston, Harborfields, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Manhasset, Mineola and Syosset school districts during the event. During the competition, students competed by creating coded projects to conquer territories on a map. Large monitors throughout the event displayed the live map as game play occurred during a three-hour,
highly competitive period, with one team ultimately emerging as the Code Conquest winner. “Although the team’s score didn’t make it to the top of the charts, they showed amazing perseverance, and fought until the very end,” said Connetquot Central School District Elementary STEM Chairperson Bethanie Rizzo.

On April 12, Connetquot High School studentmembers of Lori Forgione’s Animal Conservation Club recently worked to solve a mystery involving a female Gray Seal pup which had washed up on an east end beach. Members of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society based in Hampton Bays visited the students and supplied a deceased 4-feet-long Gray Seal pup. The purpose of their visit was to explain the mission of Atlantic Marine
Conservation Society, and to perform a “necrology” (animal autopsy) on the seal to determine the cause of death along with assistance from the students. “After a lengthy dissection by the students, it was determined that the seal died of malnutrition and dehydration,” said Mrs. Forgione. “The presentation and necrology were part of a highly educational experience for the students in the Animal Conservation Club.”
Members of the Connetquot HS Animal Conservation Club will follow up their studies with a weekend visit to the rehabilitation facilities at the Atlantis Aquarium, located in Riverhead. The mission of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society includes cleaning up marine debris, and trying to positively impact the marine environment. An Evening of Literacy The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its seventh annual Library Literacy Celebration on April 11 at Connetquot High School, surrounding the central theme of “Every Picture Tells A Story.” With assistance from the district’s librarians, interactive stations and/ or makerspace activities were set up throughout
the schools’ hallways, as students were invited to create a robot or a monster, name literary characters, “jump into a book,” create a kaleidoscope, and participate in flight school, amongst many others. This year’s guest presentation was delivered by author/illustrator Ralph Masiello, who coached the student-illustrators while storytelling and creating
original artwork of his own. While all of the supplementary fun was occurring in the school’s hallways, the heart of the Literacy Celebration was showcased in the cafeteria, where districtwide student writing samples from grades K-8 were proudly displayed in a gallery format for all to enjoy.

Hack Into the Competition Four students from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the inaugural OYO Hackathon/ Code Conquest which took place at Mineola Middle
School on April 12. The four studentrepresentatives from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School –Akshat Kamboj, Shawn Kovarik, Tyler Ramos and Sameer Umar – were joined by students
from Bellmore-Merrick, Eastport South Manor, East Williston, Harborfields, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Manhasset, Mineola and Syosset school districts during the event. During the competition,
students competed by creating coded projects to conquer territories on a map. Large monitors throughout the event displayed the live map as game play occurred during a three-hour,
highly competitive period, with one team ultimately emerging as the Code Conquest winner. “Although the team’s score didn’t make it to the top of the charts, they showed amazing
perseverance, and fought until the very end,” said Connetquot Central School District Elementary STEM Chairperson Bethanie Rizzo.
