Volleyball Fundraiser
ames Wilson Young Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society hosted a volleyball tournament to support the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and the school organization’s upcoming initiatives. As a result of the effort, the school raised approximately $1,200, and 75 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the foundation, with the remaining portion used to support the NJHS. This summer, high school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through the Leaders Save Lives program. Registration is now open to host a participating blood drive between June 1st and August 31st, 2015. The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24 year-olds to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply over the summer months. Walk For A Cure Help find a cure for the nation’s leading cause of disability by participating in the 2015 Walk To Cure Arthritis on Saturday, May 16th, at 11 a.m., at Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon, New York. More than 800 walkers, including individuals, families, and teams, will walk the 5K or optional one-mile route to raise awareness about the disease and funding for research to discover a cure. The family-friendly event includes a kids’ zone, Sponsor Expo, Team T-shirt contests and a dog costume contest. “Arthritis is more than just minor aches and pains,” said Jacqueline Duodu-Burbridge, Regional Director of the Arthritis Foundation Long Island Chapter.

In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to
see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of
me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

Lords & Ladies Of Music Connetquot Central School District Edith L. Slocum Elementary School music instructor, Mrs. Heidi Lewin, recently invited Principal John Delio to observe the group of fifth grade music students as they performed a song of their own arrangement. Three fifth grade classes competed to construct an arrangement and performance of a specific
song. The students worked to arrange the song, entitled “Renaissance Dance,” which included Orff instruments, miniature versions of percussion instruments like xylophones and marimbas, and recorders. Mrs. Alicia McNulty’s class emerged the most creative and were able to have a special performance of their piece of music. For an added treat to
the day’s performance, Slocum Elementary student, Kaitlyn McCourt, performed her New York State Music School Association (NYSSMA) Festival piece, entitled “Just Struttin’,” for her classmates and Principal Delio. The day’s performance served as an opportunity to celebrate the musical talents within the Connetquot Central School District.

Suffolk County Community College Honors Program student Steven Curcio is one of only seven students from New York and 90 students nationally to be awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. The scholarship is for up to $40,000 per year and is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees – for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or
scholarships he or she may receive. Steven, who lives in Patchogue, is a student in Suffolk’s Honors Program with a nearly perfect grade point average of 3.9, serves as a Student Government Association Senator and as the Community Service Club’s event coordinator. He is majoring in liberal arts and general studies and hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Psychology. Steven aspires to a career in human services. “ S t e v e n ’ s accomplishments and intellectual endeavors represent the best of Suffolk County Community College, “said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, adding “ and as one of only seven students from four different institutions in New York State Steven has also demonstrated he is one of the best our State has to offer. The scholarship is administered by the JKC Foundation, and focuses on students who are excelling academically and have significant unmet financial need. The Foundation supports highachieving community college students who have completed two years of study as full- time students and plan to attend a fouryear college or university beginning with the fall 2015 semester.
Sunday Drive A Success restored classics along the route, and then to display them at Lake Ronkonkoma for history, and car, buffs. The Vanderbilt Motor Parkway was a private road built by financier William K. Vanderbilt (started in 1908 and closed in 1938). It was the first paved toll road on Long Island, and the site of the Vanderbilt Cup Races (NY to Lake Ronkonkoma). A proclamation by the Suffolk County Legislature was read near the site of the Petit Trianon Inn, naming it the 10th Historic site at Lake Ronkonkoma. Tolls were collected at the entrance to the park, as had been done by Vanderbilt’s toll collectors. Sunday’s tolls, though, were actually collected and later donated to the Arthur Lopez Memorial fund in honor of the Nassau
County Police Officer who lost his life in 2012. Honorary toll collectors, dressed as Evelyn Ericson daughter of the original toll collector, were Isabella Antonia Gordon, Elana Borowski and Tianna Balkam. The April 26th Sunday Drive was a wonderful success, and reminder of the history and tradition of the highways, automobiles, and proud citizens of Long Island, and Lake Ronkokoma. The Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association is dedicated to preserve and protect the history and heritage of the Lake Ronkonkoma community. Training Grad Air Force Airman 1st Class Ryan M. Siebert graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate
in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Siebert earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Denise and George Siebert of Patchogue. On a recent beautiful Sunday morning, Long Islanders from Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma were treated to the site of 70 beautifully restored automobiles, many dating back to the beginning of the 1900’s! Organized by the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association, and President Ellyn Okvist, this fifth annual Sunday Drive began at Cunningham Park (Queens), traveled along the original route of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, and ended triumphantly at the site of the original Petit Trianon Inn, at Islip Town’s Lake Ronkonkoma park. RIVER CLEANUP - In recognition of Earth Day, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Neil Foley and Councilman Dan Panico joined staff from the Town’s Department of Environmental Protection for a clean-up of a section of the Patchogue River Watershed along Canaan Lake in Patchogue. The location is within a Town and County nature preserve. The group removed debris and trash including old tires, car parts, bottles and more. The clean-up was led by Anthony Graves, the Town’s Chief Environmental Analyst.

Woodhull Elementary School’s primary and early elementary teams students learned how to make butter using three simple ingredients - heavy cream, a mason jar and a lot of shaking. The students observed the transformation of the ingredients throughout
the process and sampled as the product turned from heavy cream to whipped cream and eventually butter. This hands-on project was part of the unit, How We Organize Ourselves. In that unit, the students learned about how resources help meet our
needs and wants. As part of the same unit, the Early Elementary Team study matter and were able to observe how matter changes from a liquid to a solid.
Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students and teachers recently celebrated International Autism Day. As part of the celebration, teachers and students spent time talking about autism and the inclusion of people who might appear to be different or shy. The
celebration also aimed to create an awareness and sensitivity of their fellow classmates with Autism. Colorful decorations, puzzle arts, students and teachers wearing blue, the official color of autism, were seen throughout the hallways of the school on the celebrated day. Edward J. Bosti
Elementary School was part of the world-wide community to take part of International Autism Day. Celebrations at global landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and the United Nations also took place for this event.
Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School’s Habitat for Humanity (H4H) club, along with the help of the Connetquot High School Touchdown Club and Assistant Principal Mrs. Louise Burger, were able to raise the necessary funds needed
to purchase and install sturdy awnings to keep the snow and ice away from the entrance of Kevin Ferrera’s home. This effort was made to help Kevin, a leukemia patient and high school student, and his family during this difficult period. The students of the H4H
club have raised more money for the Habitat for Humanity program than any other school on Long Island. The program aides in building homes, hope and opportunities for families to help themselves in their community.

CHINESE FOLK TALE - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School third grade students recently performed a series of musical presentations for their school mates in first grade. The musical presentation was an exhibit of Chinese music and presented the oriental folk tale by the name of “The River Dragons.” Using Chinese instruments, and with the help of the music teacher Mrs. White, third grade students were able to tell the story of the creation of the three major Chinese rivers and inform first graders about the Chinese culture, instruments and music.

Duffield Elementary School recently hosted a “Locks of Love” fundraiser for Alexa Temple, a student currently fighting Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. New Start Time For Air Show For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day
Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which will be headlining this year’s show, will be the final act and make their appearance in the sky above Jones Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. This will be the legendary demonstration squadron’s fourth appearance at the show, having last headlined the show in 2009. Their performance
will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines. The show will also feature veteran Bethpage Air Show performers including the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, , Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic
Team, GEICO Skytypers, Miss GEICO Speedboat, American Airpower Warbirds, and David Windmiller. New to the show this year is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets. With its fast and powerful aircraft piloted by “flying aces,” this unique aerobatics team performs a meticulously coordinated ballet, sometimes flying
within 3 meters of each other at speeds of over 435 miles per hour. The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is free of charge, but a standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected. Bethpage Air Show announcers and Air Boss Wayne Boggs will lead air show activities from the Jones Beach State Park Central Mall Boardwalk area where food, beverages and ground activities will be
