Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day
At the end of March, students in Lauren Higgins’ class at Academy Street Elementary School celebrated World Down Syndrome Day to promote awareness and acceptance of those with the developmental disability. They participated in
the “rock your socks” initiative, in which each student sported two differently patterned socks to represent that differences should be celebrated. The class also welcomed two visitors with Down syndrome and engaged in a dance party

and an interview with them. Higgins’ students greatly enjoyed the day’s programming and learned to be more accepting of others and to look for common ground despite differences.

The local community has expressed their appreciation for the easy and well organized vaccine process with many sharing their thanks on social media. Comments include a Holbrook recipient who wrote, “Got my 2nd vaccine tonight. Smoothest process ever. The doctors, nurses and support staff were so professional during these challenging times.” Many expressed their optimism and gratitude in having the additional protection from COVID-19 while others shared their joy for now having the ability to see loved ones for the first time in months. Suja Zachariah, an RN and Nurse Manager at the hospital, sent the team a thank you note saying, “It was both emotional and sweet at the same time. I’m so grateful.” “I couldn’t be more thankful to our Courageous Hearts who, after battling this pandemic for the last year, are now able to deliver new hope to our community through this vaccine” states Richard T. Margulis, President and CEO at LI Community Hospital. “I must commend our Vaccine Team including Dr. Wehbeh along with Dr. Dean Babich, Medicine Department Chair, Susan Henderson, RN,
Stroke/Trauma Program Manager, Myriam Bosco, RN and Michele Miller, Director Emergency Preparedness & EMS, for spear-heading the coordination of our vaccine clinics.” The hospital will continue to post on their Facebook page and website, including a link to the NYS registration site, when vaccines are available. Connetquot Model UN Competes On April 10, members of Connetquot High School’s Model United Nations Club competed virtually in the Metropolitan Model UN Competition hosted by Plainview-Old Bethpage School District. At the competition, the students assumed the roles of their assigned countries or
individuals and researched them in terms of topics that the UN committees are currently discussing, such as separatism, COVID-19, disarmament and more. Connetquot Central School District would like to acknowledge Brendan Falabella, Emily Hocker, Patrick Hocker, Lilia

The front-line heroes at Long Island Community have come full circle in the treatment of the deadly virus. Twelve months after seeing the first patient, the community hospital’s Vaccine Team is now delivering life-saving vaccinations in accordance with state guidance under the watchful eye of Vice President & Chief Quality Medical Officer, Dr. Wehbeh Wehbeh. Not only have they delivered over 10,000 vaccines, letting none go to waste, LI Community was also recognized as a high performing hospital by NYS Department of Health, delivering 100% of the first round doses in the required time frame to all who were eligible under their directives for distribution. The ability to quickly communicate both availability and eligibility of vaccines is key to the success of the program. To keep the community informed, the hospital takes advantage of its large social media following, posting a link to the NY State registration site on their Facebook page when they have vaccines available. They also post the link on the hospital website. Due to high demand the vaccine appointments fill up quickly, often within the first hour. Between vaccine deliveries, the hospital uses

Promoting Driver Safety Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa was recently out and about in his district after repeated calls about drivers not obeying traffic and speed limit laws in residential communities. As a result, Caracappa’s office reached out to the Sixth Precinct’s
COPE unit for assistance. Inspector Patrick Reilly responded to the request by adding a portable speed sign to help remind motorists to observe the speed limit in a particular area of concern. “I’d like to thank Inspector Reilly and the
entire Sixth Precinct for cooperating with our request to help reduce speeding,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “Public safety is my number one priority, and I will continue to do all I can to keep the Fourth Legislative District a great, safe place to live.”

The South Country Central School District is pleased to announce that National Student Council has recognized Bellport High School Student Council as a 2021 National Council of Excellence for the organization’s exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community. “I am really proud of the students for all of their hard work, even with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” student council adviser Ellen Hoffman said. “And I would like to extend a thank you to the principals for all of their help and support with our projects.” NatStuCo’s goal is to prepare and empower student leaders to better serve their communities. To meet the requirements for the National Council of Excellence Award, Bellport High School
Student Council submitted information about three activities that demonstrated leadership development and service to the school and community, Hoffman explained. The highlighted activities included Trick or Treat Street, an annual safe Halloween festival for the district and community’s students. Christmas in a Shoebox, a drive to distribute wrapped gifts and toys in decorated shoeboxes for the holiday season, was also submitted. Finally, members provided information about last year’s tile project in which Class of 2020 seniors decorated tiles illustrating their perceptions of school and life during the pandemic. The tiles will be mounted on one of the high school walls this year. President Jack Frankie said that what sets Bellport High School Student Council apart
from others is “our drive and motivation to put a foot forward to help the school and the community.” “Receiving a National Council of Excellence Award reflects dedication on the part of the school to provide a strong, wellrounded student council program,” National Association of Secondary Principals Director of Student Leadership Nara Lee said. “NatStuCo applauds the work of the National Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.” The South Country Central School District administration congratulates the student council on this outstanding achievement and looks forward to witnessing the organizations amazing work in the community.
Bellport High School Honors Essential Cafeteria Workers
A plaque honoring 18 of Bellport High School’s finest cafeteria workers was unveiled on April 15 during a Women’s History Month commemorative ceremony in Ebersole Auditorium and attended by project director and history teacher Andrew Budris and members of the South Country Central School District administration. Bellport High School Principal Timothy Hogan thanked the workers and volunteers who dedicated their efforts
in food preparation and distribution at Frank P. Long Intermediate School, Verne W. Critz Elementary School and Bellport High School at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “They showed up every day for 35 hours a week and produced and distributed 112,836 pre-packaged meals to make sure students were fed in these challenging times,” Mr. Hogan said. “The students, faculty and administration will be forever grateful for the cafeteria staff’s service to the community in

Connetquot swim coach Alex Scichilione and his T-birds celebrated the team’s 89-86 win over visiting Huntington/ Whitman team on March 16. Kylie Martinez led the way by winning the 500 freestyle (5:30.66) while Jenna Drapala won the 100 backstroke (1:03.68). The T-birds won their opening home meet of the season. The
girls’ usually compete in the Spring but, as with all section XI sports this year, the schedules have been shortened, and moved to the second half of the year. Connetquot High School interim head girls’ volleyball coach Karen Edwards and her Tbirds ended the 2021 season as Suffolk County League II Champions, and finalists for the Suffolk County Championship! Connetquot has had a busy five days, having defeated Sachem (3-0) on April 20th, Commack (3-1) on the 22nd, and playing for the Suffolk
County Championship on April 24th against eventual champion Smithtown-West (3-1). As a result of New York State’s decision to cancel the state championship tournament, Connetquot is still the reigning New York State Champion (2020). Despite the disappointment of finishing second in the championship match to Smithtown-West,
coach Edwards and her staff, the district administration and Connetquot community salute the members of the girls’ volleyball team for overcoming challenging adversity in the age of covid. Congratulations to the Connetquot players, coaches, parents and administration for continuing the winning tradition of the girls’ varsity volleyball program!

Connetquot High School boys’ varsity volleyball coach Jessica Perry brought together the players, coaches and family members on Saturday, April 17th, to recognize and thank the team’s graduating studentathletes. Unfortunately, as a result of positive positive covid
testing, quarantining, and match cancellations, the team was kept off balance for much of the season. The seniors kept encouraging the other members of the team, and demonstrated the qualities of leadership. Congratulations, and thank you, to the following graduating seniors for their

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness.
