Opportunities Available exhibit is broken into two parts. Part One will be on display November 12th through December 1st and Part Two will be on display December 10th, 2016 through January 8th, 2017. Entry into the exhibit is not juried, all members who follow the guidelines are accepted. However, awards of excellence and honorable mentions will be determined by a guest juror. The Art League’s Fine Art & Craft Fairs select only artists and craftspeople who submit sample photos indicating handcrafted works of superior quality. Of those selected to participate, care is taken to ensure a balanced representation of artistic mediums. Prizes are awarded to participating artists and craftspeople with the most innovative designs. The fairs run from 10am to 5pm on select weekends. The Art League’s 49th Annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair will take place June 4th & 5th at Heckscher Park in Huntington. Deadline for artists and craftspeople to submit application is May 20th. About 75 exhibitors participated in last year’s event, with thousands in attendance. The 53rd Annual Holiday Fine Art & Craft Fair will take place December 3rd and 4th. Deadline to submit

The art center is open to the public. There is no charge to visit the gallery, however donations are much appreciated as the Art League is a not-forprofit organization. The Art League of Long Island, located in the heart of Long Island, offers artists and would-be artists many opportunities to gain knowledge and expertise across a large variety of visual arts mediums. In addition to providing beginner to advanced instruction and skill-building for art professionals, the Art League also offers artists opportunities to display and sell their work in gallery exhibitions and fine art and craft fairs. 2016 promises to be a busy year for artists at the Art League. Of the thirteen exhibits scheduled for 2016, there are still four more juried competitions and shows open to local artists who wish to show their work and, depending on the situation, sell their work. “Long Island Life” asks photographers from Brooklyn to Montauk: what does living on Long Island mean to you? The exhibit will be on view July 2nd through July 24th. Deadline for submissions is June 1st. Exhibition juror is Neil Scholl. At the close of the year, the Art League’s Annual Members’ Exhibition invites its members to submit one work of art to show in the gallery. In 2015, 233 2-D and 3-D works were on display. Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

Woodhull Elementary School students in Gabrielle Donovan’s Intermediate class recently hosted and interviewed Bartley Horton, a 78 yearold lifetime resident of Fire Island. The activity was part of an ongoing oral history project, which annually pairs Woodhull sixthgraders with longtime Fire Island residents in order to bring the history of the

island to life. During the course of the interview, students learned that Mr. Horton attended the Fire Island School when it was a oneroom schoolhouse and was taught by Richard Woodhull, son of Fire Island School District founder Mina Woodhull. He was born shortly before the Great Hurricane of 1938, which wrought similar

devastation to Fire Island as Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and during which his mother sheltered him and his brothers in bushes on the bay side of the island. The student-elder project is a tradition at Woodhull, began and maintained by Deborah Gerken, and will hosts its annual presentation at the Ocean Beach Community Center on May 7th.

Taking Care of Teddy Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s kindergarten students had a lesson on personal safety when they took part in a Teddy Bear Clinic sponsored by the Division of Trauma and Emergency Medicine at Southside Hospital Northwell Health. During the injury

prevention program, the students learned about proper transportation safety – both while riding in a car and on a bicycle. Additionally, they had the chance to act as emergency doctors to their favorite stuffed toys. The kindergartners learned the proper way to secure

a bandage and about the steps trained professionals take when tending to real wounds. The use of the teddy bears and other stuffed animals is believed to help ease a child’s fears and anxiety about similar types of real-world medical situations.

Acting the Part Day just before the holiday break. With the help of BayportBlue Point School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera, the students toured district office, asked questions of administrators about the

day-to-day operations of a school district and learned about the important job of superintendent and the decision-making process. Each student received a varsity letter for participating, compliments of the athletics department.

Teddy Bear Clinic Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School was recently transformed into a Teddy Bear Emergency Room, to teach students how to prevent injuries and promote the importance of being safety-conscious.

As part of the workshop, students brought in stuffed animals to act as “patients” as Registered Nurse from the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Mrs. Kristi Ladowski, explained basic first aid techniques.

To practice what they had learned, the students were able to play doctor by using Band-Aid® Brand Adhesive Bandages, gauze and tongue depressors on their stuffed animals.

The visit concluded the students’ classroom studies on government services, so the students came prepared to ask Mr. Cilmi questions about the purpose of government and how his role affects their lives. in local legislation and how to get involved in initiatives, such as his recent push for banning all plastic bags in stores. He also tested the fifth graders on their government knowledge by asking if they knew the population of Suffolk County, the purpose of a budget, the job of a legislator and how many people live in the 10th legislative district.

Connetquot School Districts Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest students and advisors Mrs. Lisa Manzo and Mr. Kevin Keane recently welcomed Connetquot High School Spanish language teacher Ms. Dana Mendez-Chicas and several of her students to work with them.

The high school students worked with 5th graders at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to enrich their understanding of the culture, geography and worldwide use of the Spanish language. Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of 4th and 5th

grade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district. C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages over the course of the program.

A party was given in her honor by her mother at the Knights of Columbus in Bay Shore. Her older brother James and younger brother Luke escorted her into the hall to greet all of her guests. Her older sister Jamie helped her to get ready for her special day. All her aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, along with her grandparents, Douglas and Catherine Brooks of Lindenhurst, were there to celebrate C-QUEST WELCOME - Conntetquot School District’s Conntetquot High School with her. The Islip Town Board recently acknowledged several Bayport residents and first responders whose heroic actions saved the lives of two men. On the evening of April 10th, a small plane carrying two passengers began experiencing mechanical problems, and was forced down at the intersection of 2nd Street and 3rd Avenue

in Bayport. The residents of the quiet neighborhood acted quickly to prevent this unfortunate accident from turning into a tragedy. Joey Walsh, a twelve year-old resident, was the first to call 911. Several bystanders also began trying to extricate the plane’s two occupants. Within minutes, members of the Bayport

Fire Department were on scene, and provided initial medical assistance to the plane’s passengers while extinguishing the fires that started shortly after the crash. Town of Islip emergency personnel also responded to the incident, including several members of the MacArthur Airport Fire and Rescue team.

College Commitments Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Principal Kenneth Costa and Director of Athletics Mark Dellecave recently announced the college commitment of three student-athletes for the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Costa and Mr. Dellecave joined parents in a ceremony to congratulate the students and wish them continued success as

collegiate student-athletes. Kerry Collins, ranked among the top 5% of Connetquot’s graduating class and member of the basketball, lacrosse, track and field hockey teams, will be attending the Colorado U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Connetquot High School volleyball team member Katie Von Kampen has committed to an undecided

course of study at Georgian Court University in Lakewood Township, New Jersey. Also attending Georgian Court University in the fall is Connetquot winter track record holder and shot league champion Samantha Smith, who helped Connetquot earn the league championship in the recent 4x100 meter relay.

MARITIME EXPLORIUM - Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School fourth grade students recently worked as green engineers in an in-house field trip to the “Maritime Explorium.” The Maritime Explorium featured hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities demonstrating a variety of natural forces including water pressure, spin and the effect of gravity on liquids. Sayville Middle School Health teacher Jodi Maurici has been a long-time role model of practicing what she teachers. Recently, she organized an activity that was extremely wellreceived by both her students and their parents. “I challenged a number of students to give up all added sugar for two weeks and that went viral as well with parents and families jumping on the bandwagon with their students.” To help the students find better choices with healthy alternatives, Mrs. Maurici offered classroom instruction for several weeks. She demonstrated how to make healthy, lowor no-sugar and low- or no-fat foods in the Middle School kitchen-lab to give her students “a taste” of easy meals and simple snacks. “Healthy doesn’t always mean gross,” one student remarked in surprised delight after tasting the results. It was a revelation to many. There were

numerous student endorsements about the healthy-eating project. Tyler Schaefer noted, “I never thought something that was really healthy for you could taste so good! When I was watching the food being prepared, I saw all the healthy items put into it and thought it was going to taste horrible, but the food actually came out really good.” “I was kinda expecting it to taste like broccoli or brussel sprouts,” Luca DeStefaro said, “but I enjoyed the food and drinks. I might start making them myself.” Kayal Huisman commented, “I think the cooking activities were a nice and fun way to learn new healthy snack recipes. My favorite cooking recipe was the healthy ice cream. It was a very fun and cool experience to make snacks in class. I have already made the healthy cookies at home, and my family loved them. It is not only good, but it is fun to make

these recipes. I think it is great that they are healthy but still taste great.” Aidan McCullough remarked, “personally, I would say that my teacher, Mrs. Maurici, was very creative with how she thought of these recipes,” while James Anderson agreed adding, “I thought it was very generous of Mrs. Maurici to make food for us, even though it was after lunch!” In fact, the whole concept of healthy cooking caught on so well that when the parents discovered what their children were learning, they emailed Mrs. Maurici for other ideas and recipes they could make at home. By the end of the project the general consensus was clear. Mrs. Maurici’s lessons for eating healthy were so easy to make and delicious that her students (and their parents) ate it up! Bayport-Blue Point School District students in kindergarten through fourth-grade showcased their creativity and scientific knowledge during science fairs held at Academy Street, Blue Point and Sylvan Avenue elementary schools. Leading up to the contest, students selected a research topic of their choice and completed an experiment using the steps in the scientific method. This year’s fairs featured projects which toothpaste has the best whitening capabilities, the buoyancy of eggs and which paper towels absorb the most oil. Winners were selected from each grade level and these students will advance to compete regionally at this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair Contest. The district’s fifth- and sixth-graders exhibited their science projects during the SEED Foundation Celebration of Science event. Also on
