The visit was an extension of the students upcoming lessons in ecology. Throughout the course of Nature Nick’s demonstration, the students were not only given valuable information surrounding wildlife and

“Do Your Job” is exactly what Matt has been doing since March 9th. It is crazy how one day can really change your life. On March 9th, Matt went in for a routine colon resection for a condition called diverticulitis. Since that day Matt has had emergency surgery in order to keep him with us. His body was filled with infection and he wasa intubated and in a medical induced coma for 6 days. He has since undergone three additional surgeries and been diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer. He has made remarkable progress but still has a long road ahead of him.

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders. Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff. The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.

Celebrating Literacy Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its sixth annual Library Literacy Celebration at Connetquot High School, inviting district staff, administrators, students and their families to witness a culmination of literary displays and projects from students of all district elementary schools. Throughout the halls of

the high school, various makerspace tables were lined up for students to engage in, containing activities such as teambased poetry, creating artwork from their thumb prints and illustrating some of their favorite storybook characters. Within the auditorium, audience members were amazed by performance artist Christopher Agostino of Agostino Arts,

who worked together with student volunteers to bring folk tales to life by means of painting the students’ faces to convey the story being told. A d d i t i o n a l l y, representatives from Barnes and Noble and the Connetquot Public Library were on hand to speak to students and their families about the important benefits of reading a good book.

Bashing the Trash Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School were recently visited by the talented and environmentallyconscious musicians of “Bash the Trash” in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. Introduced by music

teacher Rachel White, the program began with the performers parading down the aisles of the school’s auditorium as they simultaneously played drums, horns and string instruments created entirely out of recycling materials. After displaying the unique qualities of their instruments for the

student’s entertainment, the Bash the Trash musicians also explained how the sounds were produced so that the students could go home to create their very own instruments out of hollow tubes, rubber bands, buckets and empty plastic soda bottles.

CELEBRATING LITERACY - Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its sixth annual Library Literacy Celebration at Connetquot High School, inviting district Fourth- and fifth-grade staff, administrators, students and their families to witness a culmination of literary elementary-level students displays and projects from students of all district elementary schools. A representative from Long Island Science Center provided a handson presentation regarding forensics as a culmination of the fifth-graders 10-

week classroom study on the topic. During her demonstration, guest speaker Eileen Tambone explained to the students the duties of a forensic archaeologist, and how their job consists of analyzing remains of human bones and teeth. Additionally, students were able to work together to analyze real bones to determine age, gender and cause of death. The fourth-grade students also attended a separate program about

ecosystems after studying environmental science extensively in their classrooms prior to their activity. They analyzed the water quality of samples taken from the Peconic River by testing the pH levels and analyzed the turbidity using Jackson turbidity units. Additionally, they learned facts about how the water quality affects life in an ecosystem and created interlocking food webs.

Taking to the Stage

Academy Street Elementary School fourth-grade students in Carrie Almskog’s class collaborated with Nancy Celentano’s kindergarten class for a theatrical performance of the classic story “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” on April 20th.

After months of rehearsals and preparations, the students premiered the show for family members and the entire school community to enjoy. This year’s production enabled the students to practice their collaborative learning and reading

comprehension skills, and introduced them to various aspects of the theater, including how to follow stage direction.

Students enrolled in Ashley Lefevre’s French classes at Connetquot High School recently visited with Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest students in an effort to engage in activities and lessons surrounding the French language and culture. Throughout the duration of their visit, the students interacted

with one another and engaged in activities such as French-themed Bingo and coloring the French flag. Additionally, utilizing the Kahoot webbased program, the high school students prepared an interactive quiz for the younger students displayed entirely in the French language. With help from C-Quest advisers Lisa

Manzo and Kevin Keane, Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourthand fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Team Effort Fourth-grade students in Michelle Eskin’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently worked collaboratively during a Makerspace activity based on the children’s books “The Most Magnificent Thing.”

After school librarian Anna Marie Tongue introduced the book’s main theme of creating with an open mind, the students met together in small groups to create their very own projects while utilizing such objects as Lincoln Logs, plastic gears and magnetic rods.

“The goal of the activity was to get the students thinking in a creative light, as they began to demonstrate authentic problem-solving strategies and assimilate new ideas while incorporating literacy,” said Mrs. Tongue.

Upcycling for Earth Day

Art Teacher and Department Chair Deb Urso challenged her Advanced Fashion class to Hand-me-Down - Reuse, Upcycle* by coming up with a new use for an old garment. (“Upcycle” refers to the reuse of discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original.) For Spring Recess, the Fashion class, comprised of mixed grades 10-12, was assigned the task of finding something to upcycle. The students could pick a piece of clothing from their closets that would “end up in the trash because it no longer fit or was out of style.” They could rummage through

their family attics or basements for discarded clothes headed to the thrift shops or even purchase an item they wouldn’t wear “as is” and upcycle it to something they could use. Once they returned from the holiday break, the students spent several days in the classroom reworking the garments. They cut, dyed, stained, embroidered, pinned, and sewed their pieces into a new wearable outfit. “Some students made bags, tops, dresses, and altered jean shorts,” Ms Urso said. “Some students experimented with chemicals such as bleach and dyes incorporating steam into our curriculum. Others were influenced

by old genres to create something new with an 80s/90s flair.” Ms Urso was pleased to add that her students “worked closely together and helped one another by teaching each other new techniques that they have learned. It was great to see a buzz in the room; the girls were having fittings and pinning on each other. One student expressed: ‘I feel like a celebrity, she is designing clothes for me.’” Impressed by her students’ designs Ms Urso praised then with the reminder “when you become famous designers, never forget where your inspiration started - in little Sayville High School Fashion Class for Earth Day!”

MEDFORD EARTH DAY - On Saturday, April 22nd, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco hosted the Medford Earth Day Celebration at the Medford Veterans Memorial Park. The event was co-hosted by Councilman Neil Foley, the Medford Taxpayers & Civic Association, the Medford Chamber of Commerce, and the Patchogue-Medford Library. Hundreds of residents joined in to plant flowers in the park, participate in demonstrations, and enjoy family friendly activities all focused on protecting and preserving the Earth.

Fifth-grade students at Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Academy Street Elementary School were recently visited by Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team members Greg Reynolds, Nick Clark and Josh Wege for an informative session about not giving up despite the obstacles that life may present. Throughout the duration of their visit to the school, the “handicapable” athletes spoke to the students about how

they lost their limbs, and instilled hope in them that these misfortunes do not stop them from living their lives to the fullest potential. Students were able to test their physical endurance during a fun activity hosted by Mr. Reynolds, in which he challenged them to see how many pushups they could complete against him. Additionally, the students asked the wounded warriors about their lives, asking such informative questions as, “Did anyone lose their

dominant limbs?” Their visit to the school was made possible due to the efforts All Pro Sports Academy owner and Academy Street Elementary parent Scott June. According to their website, the Wounded Warriors Project aims to honor and empower wounded warriors who have been injured and lost limbs while fighting to protect the country.

Bond Resolutions Approved

The Islip Town Board recently passed bond resolutions that authorized the Town to begin drainage improvements throughout the Town, repave parking lots, improve the Town parking lots and sidewalks as well as acquire emergency service radios, and light and heavy equipment. The total approved in authorizing bonds is just over $5 million. “I’m encouraged that the funding for these improvements to some of the Town’s infrastructure was approved by the Town Board, but there is more that needs to be done, to bring our infrastructure to a level that our residents deserve,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Surrounded by proud family and district staff members, Connetquot High School senior Brittany Curtin recently signed a letter of intent to continue her impressive athletic career at Lehigh University beginning in the fall. Brittany, who is ranked number one in New York State in the track and field

event of discus and number two in the hammer throw event, will take part in the university’s athletic program while majoring in mathematics. In addition to her state honors, Brittany currently holds the all-time records for weight throw, indoor shotput, outdoor shotput, discus and hammer throw at Connetquot High

School. She was recently named as a finalist for the Butch Dellecave Award, which will be presented by Newsday later in the year. Academically speaking, she has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll throughout her high school career and will graduate ranked in the top 4 percent of the Class of 2017.

Breakfast Sandwich Day

Who can resist the smell of bacon? At least fifty Sayville Middle School students and staff members found it difficult. The students from the functional academics program had been routinely cooking up a storm in the PAES Lab at Sayville Middle school to acquire real-life experiences. The aroma of their successes especially their eggs and bacon sandwiches - had proven so enticing to the neighboring classrooms throughout the building that it prompted other staff and students to joke about getting samples. Our families and businesses deserve better facilities and infrastructure than they had to endure in the past, and there is no better time for the Town to seek the funding that would make theses necessary improvements a reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter. The Town Board will have another chance to pass these critical resolutions at a future meeting.

Mrs. Hawthorn, the District’s behavior consultant, along with SRPs Mrs. Diane Lynch and Mrs. Christine Sirico helped Mrs. McLary make over fifty bacon-

egg-cheese sandwiches that morning. “Orders for breakfast sandwiches were taken,” a tireless Mrs. McLary summarized the involved process. “Food was cooked, sandwiches were assembled; students made change and delivered sandwiches to staff and other employees. The morning was a big success and the students enjoyed this learning experience. Staff raved about how delicious the sandwiches were and how polite the students were who delivered them.” After it was all done, the students who worked so hard on the project enjoyed a treat of bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. How could they resist?

Leader in Me Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School was recently chosen to host distinguished guests from Iceland as part of a cross-cultural learning experience that highlights the school’s successful Leader in Me program and the Icelandic culture. Throughout the duration of their visit to the school, the foreign educators were able to engage in activities planned throughout the day that displayed how educational practices pertaining to the Leader in

Me program are utilized. Students in Kim Patterson’s kindergarten class worked collaboratively on a synergize-themed project which asked them to fill up the empty space in a fishshaped design while the Icelandic visitors observed and took notes on the lesson. Additionally, Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden sat down alongside staff members and the guests to discuss similarities and differences regarding culture and education. To conclude the day’s

events, the visitors were treated to special musical performances from Bosti student leaders, expressing their gratitude toward the Icelandic educators attending their school. The Leader in Me program, developed by Franklin Covey, teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. The program is now being implemented in more than 2,000 schools worldwide.

Splashing into Spring Cold weather and rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the day as splashers gathered to help raise money and awareness for AHRC Suffolk’s programs and services during their annual Polar Bear Splash last Saturday, April 22nd. This year welcomed back a few of our favorite groups such as James E Allen Junior and Senior

High, the Dominic Trionfo Memorial Fund Foundation and North Babylon’s Students for a Better World and Honor Society! We also welcomed some new groups such as Connetquot’s Breaking Boundaries Club! This year also welcomed Owen Karlson a 10-yearold boy from Wading River who helped raise over

$2,000 for the Splash. For Owen, it was personal, he has a brother that attends AHRC Suffolk’s Saul and Elaine Seiff Educare Center and wanted to do something that would make a difference for his brother; Owen and Team Elliot helped raise over $10,000 for the event!
