Idle Hour Elementary School students enrolled in Renee Healy’s second-grade class in the Connetquot Central School District recently learned how the environment has affected the size of the butterfly population on Long Island, and what they could do to help. With assistance from Sally Wellinger of the Long Island Explorium in Port Jefferson, Ms. Healy’s students watched an interactive video program

that explained the value of butterflies, and how changes in the landscape have made it difficult for butterflies to spread pollen and survive. Students were encouraged to help revive the butterfly population by spreading plant seeds, and engaged in an activity which utilized clay, catapults and their creative talents. Seeds from plants local to Long Island such as goldenrod, cardinal flower and joe-pye weed were

given to the students who then rolled those seeds into a ball of clay. They worked collaboratively to create innovative models of instruments that could be used to send those seed balls into an “island” which was set up in the classroom. The Long Island Explorium encourages young students to explore and play together with science-based exhibits and activities.

Dangers of Driving The officers spoke about New York State’s Leandra’s Law, which makes it an automatic felony on the first offense to drive drunk with a person who is 15 years of age or younger. Indence and Marinelli also discussed the effect of drugs and alcohol on

their judgement, vision and reaction time, and the negative consequences that such actions could have on one’s personal life. Special goggles were also used by several students to mimic the effect alcohol and drugs would have on them.

Electric Bus Visits More than 50 school district leaders got their first look at what many say is the future of pupil transportation – the first U.S. made all-electric, zero-emissions school bus. Currently on an inaugural cross-country tour, this battery-powered prototype bus made a stop in Bay Shore, Long Island, where school board members, superintendents and transportation officials participated in a two-hour introduction and test ride of the bus. The event was hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. The bus was built by Blue Bird Corporation,

one of three main school bus makers in the U.S., and its batteries and drivetrain were developed by Adomani Electric. “Electric and hybrid buses will have a big role in the future of pupil transportation on Long Island. Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one of the nation’s largest bus manufacturers, to focus on electric technology.”

In just the last several years, advances in battery technology have greatly increased the potential range for electric-powered school buses, making them far more viable for everyday fleet use. The buses “plug in” overnight and have a potential range up to 125 miles per charge. “The first thing you notice is that it has no tailpipe. It is literally the cleanest school bus in the U.S., yet has just as much power as a gas or diesel powered vehicle,” said Phil Horlock, President of Blue Bird Corporation, who discussed the bus at the event. “Mechanically, the bus is amazingly simple and as a result, is much

easier and less costly to maintain. Of course, it offers huge savings on fuel costs.” “We encourage and welcome the commitment of Blue Bird, which is taking the lead in producing buses that run on alternative sources of energy,” said Corrado who said he expects that an all-electric bus will begin operating on a regular school district route in Suffolk County sometime this year. Suffolk Transportation Service operates over 1,400 vehicles, mainly diesel buses and gasoline vans, serving 18 school districts. The event was hosted by the Islip Town School Board Association,

compromised of board of education members from districts throughout the Town of Islip. “We’re very excited to be at a point at which this cutting edge bus is ready to go into service. This can be a win-win for both the taxpayers and the environment,” said Sue Schnebel, Superintendent of Islip School District. Another attendee was Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Port Jefferson School District. “What a message students receive when they ride on a bus like this. There are messages about sustainability, green energy, and messages about the future. This

becomes something they are exposed to every day on their way to and from school,” he said. While electric buses are more costly, members of the Islip Town School Board Association learned about grants and funding approaches that may be available which can dramatically bring down the initial $350,000 price tag. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. 13 Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, awarded two $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarships to SUNY Old Westbury students Jack Benjamin and Magdalena Zielinska. The educational scholarship reflects TFCU’s ongoing efforts to provide support and encouragement to local students within the communities it serves. Magdalena Zielinska, a junior, is an accounting major. She is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School and lives in Lindenhurst. TFCU also awarded the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship to Magdalena in 2016 when she was a sophomore at SUNY Old Westbury. Jack Benjamin, a junior, is also majoring in accounting. He is a graduate of Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills and lives in Deer Park. Nicholas Maletta, for whom this scholarship is named, began serving on TFCU’s Board of Directors in 1983. In

Supplies Surprise A collaborative effort at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District created connections between literacy and community service through a studentorganized Pick a Reading Partner theme for the month of March. Two fifth-grade students, Brooke Storan and Meadow Murphy, teamed up with second-grade student Lorenzo Vargas to develop a PARP theme that encouraged reading throughout the building, while also collecting school supplies for less fortunate

students at Merrimac and other schools in Sachem. The student trio coined the PARP theme, “Supplies Surprise,” and set a goal to collect a plethora of school supplies while logging reading time along the way. The students held two assembly programs informing students of the various incentives associated with the program they organized. For students in kindergarten, first and second grade, once they reach 200 minutes of reading they earn a sheet of quotes to decorate

that will be given to the recipients of the school supplies. Fourth- and fifthgrade students that reach 150 minutes of reading earn raffle tickets that will be drawn to select the students who would help organize the collected supplies before they are distributed. As part of the unique initiative, each grade has been assigned a different group of supplies to donate. The students read a total of 148,791 minutes — just shy of their goal of 150,000.

Sharing Musical Knowledge Soft notes and musical magic flowed through Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently as Sachem resident Donna Basile held an informative assembly on the recorder for all third-grade students. A former music educator from the Harborfields Central School District, Basile holds a vast knowledge of the recorder

and shared this insight with Nokomis students. Beginning in the third grade, all students across the district are introduced to the recorder and begin learning various scales and songs as part of the music curriculum. During the assembly, Basile periodically integrated the history of the recorder dating back to the 15th century. Students learned about

seven different sized recorders ranging from the Garklein to the great bass. After showing students each recorder, Basile demonstrated the unique pitch of the varying instruments by performing familiar melodic songs. The assembly provided students added knowledge about their instruments before taking the stage this May for the annual thirdgrade recorder concert.

Sayville VFW Post 433 was excited to learn that Sayville students had scheduled a study-trip to France and England during February break. As part of their itinerary, the Sayville High School students, along with faculty Jennifer Berotti (Art), Mike Pace (Social Studies), and Doug Shaw (English), were planning

Testing Teamwork Critical thinking fueled student designs recently as all fifth-grade students at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District participated in a STEAM activity aimed at enhancing student collaboration. The activity, led by Merrimac art teacher Jenna Motroni, challenged student groups to design

and construct the tallest tower possible out of predetermined amounts of spaghetti, tape and string, which at the end of the build would have to hold a marshmallow at its peak. Students were given a 20-minute build time to carefully construct a functional tower out of the limited resources provided. “It is fun to teach

students traditional concepts in a unique way,” Ms. Motroni said. “Students get to work on solving different problems through teamwork.” At the conclusion of the activity, students collectively discussed alternative construction approaches that could improve the design of their towers.

Magic and mystery filled Allison Poffenbarger’s classroom at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as her fifth-grade students participated in multiple engaging, Harry Potterthemed STEAM activities throughout the day. As part of the English language arts curriculum, students recently completed the first book of the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Looking to make cross-curricular connections, Poffenbarger then developed collaborative thinking and problem-solving skillbuilding activities based on

the story. Separated into four groups representing each house depicted in the book, the students began work on each activity in timed 30-minute increments. Students were challenged to create a contraption capable of launching the “Golden Snitch” the greatest distance possible. Equipped with rubber bands, tape, scissors, string and paper towel rolls, they were free to design and construct the most efficient launcher. In a different activity, students were asked to design a marble maze mirroring the one in Gringotts Bank. Each maze was required to have three turns and use

3 feet of paper towel rolls, among other objects, to transfer the marble. Continuing the funfilled activities, students crafted their own wands out of various materials provided. They wrapped their wands in pipe cleaners and string and covered them with colorful glitter to show off their wizardly crafts. As part of another activity, they were tasked with designing the longest dragon possible out of paper towel rolls. As the culminating activity to the day’s events, each group raced to the finish in a Harry Potterthemed Breakout EDU activity, navigating clues from the popular novel.

Recently, Sayville resident, local VFW Post 433 member, and former Army nurse Joan Furey recounted her amazing experiences for the High School students in the Sayville History Club. From 1969-1970, Mrs. Furey served with the Army Nurse Corps in Pleiku at the 71st Evacuation

Hospital and worked in the Post-Op Intensive Care Unit. She was also the only woman featured in the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick PBS documentary series The Vietnam War. In addition, Mrs. Furey has co-edited Visions of War, Dreams of Peace which offers the important and overlooked

perspectives of the women who served in Vietnam. History Club members, along with advisors Mrs. Hart and Mr. Pace, felt privileged to learn about Mrs. Furey’s experiences and thanked her, not only for her visit but also for her incredible service to our country.

Teaming Up for Tech Technology transcended grade levels at Sachem High School North in the Sachem Central School District as students throughout the building explored numerous educational technologies during a collaboration between the library at High School North and the Sachem Public Library. During the Sachem Public Library’s studio

tour, the library at High School North bustled with students engaged in the latest technologies. High-tech devices offered were drones, mBots, Ozmo drawing tablets and a virtual reality headset simulator. Students interested in creative design and engineering could explore lower-tech options such as Strawbees and Legos.

“It was a really interesting experience,” student Joe Ennisi said as he waited on line to experience the VR headset. “These activities really make you think outside the box.” The introduction to the new technologies encouraged students to expand on curriculum concepts through tactile learning.

Conservation Club In tandem with their robust science curriculum, members of the Connetquot High School Animal Conservation Club recently learned how the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society assists animals in need. With the assistance of Kimberly Durham and Hannah Winslow of the Hampton Bays-based nonprofit organization,

the students observed and took part in a dissection of a female gray seal to learn about the animal and find new ways to prevent tragedies throughout the marine ecosystems. “After a lengthy dissection by the students and Mrs. Durham, it was determined that the seal suffered from pneumonia and parasites, which caused malnutrition,”

said science teacher Lori Forgione. The mission of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society includes cleaning up marine debris and making an effort to positively impact the marine environment. For further information on their efforts, please visit www. amseas.org.

Music Mentoring In an effort to ensure that they were fully prepared for the upcoming NYSSMA Music Festival taking place on April 25th at Connetquot High School, the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Music Honor Society members met prior with elementary school music students for a

mentoring session. “During their visit, students practiced performing their scales, solos and sight reading for OBMS Tri-M students,” said OBMS music teacher Melissa Johnson. “In addition to gaining more experience, the elementary students interacted with

the upperclassmen.” Each spring, the New York State School Music Association sponsors festivals across the state in which students have the opportunity to perform solos and small ensembles for an impartial judge.

Connecting with History

When students and adults from Sayville High School returned from a week-long study trip to France and England last month, they brought with them the usual array of souvenirs: University of

Paris sweatshirts, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tea towels, and sand from the Normandy Beaches. They returned with memories of a week spent wandering the streets of Paris, the gardens of

Versailles, the galleries of the Louvre and the Tower of London. One student, however, carried very personal remembrances of a remarkable experience he had on the northern coast of France, at the American Cemetery in Normandy. Every February, groups of Sayville students have the opportunity to get an up-close look at the European art and history they have been studying. For the past fourteen years, students have travelled to Europe’s major cities and historical sites. This year’s trip began in Paris, wended north through the French countryside to Normandy, crossed the English Channel to Canterbury and finished in London. Students were able to get an up close look at the Mona Lisa and the works

of Van Gogh in Paris. They visited the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, the university town of Canterbury with its soaring cathedral and finished their week with London’s West End production of Wicked. Stuffed with crepes, Croque Monsieur and fish and chips, the students and their teachers returned to Sayville with a greatly expanded worldview. One student, Christopher Pitre, however, travelled across the ocean only to learn more about his family at home. As a child, Chris had heard stories of his great-uncle, Anthony Cacace, a Staff Sergeant with the 66th Division of the 262 Infantry. SSG Cacace was lost at sea off Normandy as his ship, the USS Leopoldville, was torpedoed by the German

submarine, U-486 as it approached the French Coast on Christmas Eve, 1944. When Chris arrived at Normandy, after the Sayville students had visited the museum and laid a wreath at the war memorial, he made his way to the visitors’ center. He presented his uncle’s name, and was almost immediately asked if he had ever seen a picture of his heroic relative. Cemetery staff brought Chris behind their desks and showed him items from their archive, including a picture of Cacace and a letter from Chris’ great grandmother to her son, which was, sadly, never delivered. Chris was given copies of the archive, and driven out to the memorial, where his uncle’s name is engraved. Cemetery

staff conducted a brief flag ceremony and presented Chris with a French and an American flag. They sincerely thanked Chris and his family, on behalf of the French people, for their sacrifice at the end of World War II. They reminded Chris that were it not for the sacrifices of people like his uncle, the map of Europe would look very different today. The staff invited Chris to receive the American flag which flies over the American Cemetery that afternoon at the Military Retreat Ceremony. Most American visitors return from Normandy with a small container of sand from one of the landing beaches; Chris Pitre returned with far more.
