Hundreds of Connetquot residents and people from all over Long Island participated in the One Mile Fun Run and the 5K foot-race around the Duffield neighborhood. Local residents handed out water along the route to support the participants.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland flooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

LITERARY BREAKFAST - As part of a District’s anti-bullying initiative, Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students, parents and teachers recently participated in a Literacy Breakfast event and read a book titled The Invisible Boy. The book is about how small random acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others and help in preventing against bullying. The breakfast event was designed to celebrate the conclusion of the school-wide activity “One Book, One Bosti Community.”

5K RACERS - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted the 2014 “Duffield Dash” sponsored by the Duffield Parent Teacher Association. Hundreds of Connetquot residents and people from all over Long Island participated in the One Mile Fun Run and the 5K footrace around the Duffield neighborhood. Local residents handed out water along the route while small children climbed the local fire department trucks. The event was part of an initiative to encourage healthy living in the community.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Legislator Kara Hahn, Tom Ronayne, Suffolk County Director of Veterans Services and Suffolk County veterans to plant two Cherry Blossom trees in honor of Earth Day and our veterans. “As we celebrate Earth Day across the globe, we must individually and collectively do all we can to save our planet and protect our environment,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Today, I have the

honor of planting two trees in Suffolk County’s Armed Forces Plaza in tribute and salute to our veterans who give of their lives to protect our freedoms. I would like to give a special thank you to Seatuck Nurseries in Eastport for donating the trees and partnering with Suffolk County.” Tree planting is a great way to celebrate Earth Day as it beautifies an area but more importantly trees help produce oxygen and filter out pollutants to clean the air and also help

preserve water levels in the soil. “Tress are both symbolic of the cycles in each person’s life and serve as a reminder of the renewal of nature,” said Legislator Kara Hahn, sponsor of a 2012 bill creating a memorial arbor program for Suffolk County Parks. “Therefore the planting of a tree is one of the most fitting and lasting tributes to the memory of a loved one.”

PIE FIGHT - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School K-5th grade students recently raised over $13,000 for the American Heart Association. As a reward for meeting their fundraising objective, the students who raised the most money had the opportunity to throw pies at principal Dr. Gail Cholden and physical education teachers Tara West and Michael Oldis. The money was raised as part of the “Jump Rope for Heart” program, which aims to educate students about the importance of physical activities and proper nutrition to promote excellent heart health.

LICC also offers extensive outreach to Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student and teacher interaction. Topics are age-appropriate and carefully scripted, and include suicide prevention and awareness, anger management, understanding self-injury, the dangers of cyberbullying, understanding homophobia and transphobia, and adolescent depression. As of last school year, more than 13,000 students and educators participated in the program. The center offers free, high-quality, confidential programs and services to support and empower Long Islanders at critical times in their lives, based on a series of core values that include timeliness, integrity, respect, transparency, empowerment and innovation. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed aroundthe-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island agencies. In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21.

LITERARY LUAU - Connetquot Central School District recently celebrated its 3rd Annual Literary Luau attended by over 1,000 students, parents, teachers and librarians from the District. The Literary Luau is an opportunity for students to meet with local authors who stress the importance of education and benefits of reading in order to achieving academic success. Over 20 local children’s book authors attended the event and discussed the importance of reading as well as answering questions from the students about their career as authors.
