olunteerism, fundraising and finding a cure for cancer is the mission of this year’s Student Council at Sayville School District’s Cherry Avenue Elementary School. To accomplish this, the students teamed up with Pennies for Patients, a division of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. During the program, students collected money to support LLS’s mission to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

The American Heart Association’s Long Island Annual Heart Ball will be celebrating its 52nd year on Friday, May 8th, at a new venue: the Museum of American Armor – Old Bethpage Restoration Village. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to celebrate outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,
the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was
nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

There is just something About this time of the year. From the rain To the laughing rainbows, The sky is always so bright, Just like neon lights. So open, so free, I laugh all day.
Laughter fills the air, The scent of a barbecue everywhere. The sizzling sound becomes very familiar. Leaves of trees become vibrantly green as they blow in the wind.
Spring is so warm, The lemonade is always there to cool me down. It’s super, sweet and sour. Spring always makes me so happy, Even when it rains. I sing and dance in the rain, Almost like I’m insane. There is just something about spring.
Ice cream trucks coming down street. Kids hurry to finish their ice cream treats before it melts. Having picnics in the backyard, Watching stars at night, Waiting for sunrise, to do it all again.
I play outside all the time And make raps out of rhymes. We don’t have to wear big fluffy coats, scarves or hats. Now we can wear shorts, tank tops and flip-flops. There is just something about spring.

Bayport-Blue Point High School ninth-grader Dan Milazzo, a dedicated member of the local Troup 329, has become the youngest member of his troop to earned the top rank in the Boy Scouts – the rank of Eagle Scout. For this honor, Dan
was required to earn at least 21 merit badges and complete an extensive service project. For his project, Dan fundraised for and installed 117 fiberglass hydrant markers along several Bayport streets running from Railroad Ave to the Great South Bay. As

As an extension of the district’s commitment to enriching academic programs for students, the Bayport Blue Point School District regularly seeks to identify ways to improve the quality of Board of Education decisions. During the school year, trustees participate in school leadership workshops and training programs to further their understanding of best practices and education law. However, outside work commitments, as well as budget and time constraints, sometimes limit their access to this valuable education resource. This year, the district worked to combat these challenges by launching a highly successful initiative they
call the Continuing Trustee Education program. “It came into being after we noticed that as part of our retainer agreement with our attorneys, they were willing to come in to the district and conduct workshops at no additional cost on topics of our choosing,” said Board President Rebecca Campbell. “We decided to take advantage of this opportunity and focused on areas that we knew would soon be appearing on our agendas; ones that would require the Board to have in depth knowledge of complicated matters.” This year’s workshop topics have included civil service law, board governance and bond referendum development. While the trustees differ
greatly in how much time they can devote to outside education, they each recognize the importance such training has on their work and have eagerly participated in the indistrict sessions. “Just like our students, we must continue to learn in order to make good decisions and stay abreast of the developments in education law,” Ms. Campbell added. “By bringing education opportunities into the district, we make them more easily available to all of us. It’s democratic. It works. And it’s free!” The Board participates in approximately three school attorney-led training programs each year.
VET DOG DONATION - A group of 20 friends dedicated to helping “America’s Vet Dogs” held a Chinese Auction fundraiser and raised $12,000 for that organization, which trains and provides service dogs to veterans in need. Calling themselves “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” the group members come from all over Islip and Brookhaven Towns. The fundraiser, held last week in Sayville, was attended by over 300 people.
90 YEARS YOUNG - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended a celebration at the Sayville Community Seniors Club for Catherine Nicholson, in honor of her 90th birthday. Women Vets Honored
Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray recently attended the Florence Evans Award Ceremony where the brave women who served our country during World War II were honored. This ceremony is annually held during March, Woman’s History Month, at the Lt. Florence Evans Memorial Park in Sayville. Town Clerk Murray presented each veteran, or their respective family members, with a Town
of Islip Certificate of Recognition and thanked them for their selfless service. The veterans honored were: Lt. Bernadette Leach of the US Army Nurse Corps; Staff Sgt. Marjorie Jean MacDonnell of the US Army Military Police; Seaman First Class Dorothy E. Tucker of the US Navy Waves; Ensign Ruth A. Tucker of the US Navy Nurse Corps; Marie Irene Fritz of the US Army
WAAC; Seaman First Class Gwen Coombs Atkinson of the US Navy Waves; and Telecommunicator Second Class Ruth Welch also of the US Navy Waves. In addition, Store Keeper Second Class Theresa Heller, Boatswains Mate Third Class Malerie Bell, and Seaman Christian Alkins, currently serving in the US Coast Guard Base at Fire Island, Babylon, New York, were also recognized.

Retiree Honored
The Suffolk County Legislature honored longtime county employee Carolyn E. Fahey on her retirement after more than 35 years of service to Suffolk County. She began her career as a Secretary in the County Executive’s Office on January 21st, 1980. She became a County Executive Assistant I, on May 21st, 1984. On December 1st, 1986 she became an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst, serving a total of seven years in the County
Executive’s office. She transferred to the Health Department on February 9th, 1987 remaining an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst I. On October 1st, 1990 she became a Grants Analyst at the Health Department. Then, on October 25, 1993, she transferred to the Department of Economic Development with the title of Assistant Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator. She received the title of Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator on
March 21st, 2003 and has served in that position ever since. Honoring Ms. Fahey at the Suffolk County Legislature’s Economic Development Committee meeting on April 22nd were County Legislators Jay Schneiderman, Kate Browning, Kevin McCaffrey, Robert Trotta and Kara Hahn, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Caroline Fahey, and County Legislators William Lindsay III, Steve Stern and Rob Calarco.
Blue Point Elementary School fifth-graders had the chance to expand their knowledge of the rainforest when they participated in a Skype session with the rainforest scientist they have been studying, Meg Lowman. As part of their English Language Arts studies, the students in Mrs. Loeffler and Mrs. Mandell’s classes read “The Most Beautiful Roof in the
World” by Kathryn Lasky. This informational text described the work of scientists documenting the biodiversity of rainforests, specifically a case study of Meg Lowman, a researcher of rainforest canopies. During the videoconference, the students were completely captivated by “Canopy Meg,” as she shared how she became fascinated with studying what is
happening at the tops of trees and her experience on the treetop walkways. The session ended with fifthgrader, Stephen Shultz, beaming with joy to share with Canopy Meg that she inspired him more than ever to become a scientist one day. Photo provided by: Bayport-Blue Point School District

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by members of the Suffolk County Legislature, local military veterans and veteran’s advocates, the Greater Long Island Running Club, race directors and registered Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon runners to announce the 2015 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series. The series will take place in various locations throughout the County, including in East Northport, Lake Ronkonkoma,
Oakdale, Northport and Lindenhurst. “With the launch of the 2015 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series, we now have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact for our local veterans,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I want to thank all those who helped make this series possible as it is our obligation to help provide our heroes with the services and assistance they need when they return home. We now have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact for our
local veterans.” The series will serve as an opportunity for local veterans and residents to participate in local races, including the Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon on September 13th, while helping to raise additional funds for local veteran service groups. “The Murphy family is delighted that County Executive Steve Bellone has taken it upon himself to initiate the Suffolk County Marathon in support of all veterans and included the Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy 4-mile run around
Lake Ronkonkoma in his veterans running series,” said Dan Murphy, father of the SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. “I have always found County Executive Bellone to be strongly supportive of our veterans community and committed to our Suffolk County veterans and their needs. This inaugural marathon is again evidence of that strong and continuing commitment to our veterans. Just in time for the grand opening of its 46th season on April 8th, the Long Island Game Farm showed visitors its newly acquired alpacas as part of its expanding animal exhibit. The Game Farm received the animals from the Ceruti family of Shoreham, who have been longtime friends of the Game Farm. The Cerutis donated their backyard pet alpaca herd, consisting of Rosie and her yearling Robbie; Sophie and her yearling Rusty; Gracie and her yearling Zoe; and one female named Melanie. Alpacas are a domesticated species of the South American camelid, resembling a small Llama in appearance, but considerably smaller. They have a silky fleece that covers their bodies and are shorn each year, producing between five and eight pounds of fleece annually. Some of their colors are black, white, brown and gray. Their wool is waterrepellent and is used for making coats, sweaters and blankets. They are able to live in semi-arid habitats and are native to South American countries, including Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. They also have cloven hooves that help them negotiate steep mountainous terrain.
From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive. “This is it. The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries
and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their
