Education comes in all forms and locations, as seen in the case of Bellport High School student Kerri Campbell. In addition to learning her core courses, the high school senior has also been tuned in to a cockpit’s controls as she regularly takes off from an airport runway. As a senior, Kerri is looking forward to receiving her diploma this coming June but has recently gotten a jumpstart on her future career. The future airline pilot recently passed her FAA checkride, a Federal Aviation Administration examination a pilot must undergo to receive an aircraft pilot’s certificate or rating for flight privileges. Additionally, her recently acquired private pilot’s certificate allows Kerri

to now fly a single engine plane with passengers as pilot in command. The road to becoming a pilot has been in the making since Kerri was 13 years old when she first joined the Civil Air Patrol. Her interest flourished after attending a Civil Air Patrol National Glider Flight Academy where she flew solo in a glider for the first time at just 16. Kerri is not only interested in powered flight, but gliders and lighter than air aircraft. She plans on obtaining both her glider and lighter than air ratings in the near future as well. In September, Kerri plans on attending ATP Flight School, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she will begin her professional flight training to become an airline pilot.

Kerri currently attends Bellport High School classes remotely, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Being able to acquire my certification has been a positive outcome of remote instruction,” Kerri said. The Brookhaven Hamlet resident is also a member of Bellport High School’s National Honor Society and various other clubs. She said she has had little time to participate in many activities other than flying throughout her high school career but is pleased that she could participate in community service projects through Civil Air Patrol membership. “I have basically spent my whole life flying,” Kerri said. “It has been my whole focus.”

This not only improves the patient care experience, which is in and of itself very important;

it also allows us to keep our patients safely out of the hospital if that is at all possible,” Dr. Kaufman said. Dr. Kaufman has been a practicing physician for over 30 years. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at SUNY Stony Brook before attending Ross University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Jersey City Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Kaufman completed his nephrology fellowships at New York Medical College and SUNY Stony Brook, which included an additional year of research in acid-base physiology. AMVETS Post 48 Visits Canine Companions For Independence By Patrick Mitchell, Past Commander NYS Sons Of AMVETS On April 20, AMVETS Post 48 Members visited Canine Companions for Independence Miller Family Campus in Medford, NY to make a donation to the Service Dog Organizations Veterans Initiative. This program provides highly trained service dogs at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel with disabilities. Canine Companions is an organization that promotes the concept of training specially bred dogs to help people with disabilities other than blindness. All Canine Companions service dogs go through an intensive training process where they learn to master more than forty commands. Dogs and veterans are matched to form a team, and together they attend a two-week training program where they learn to work together. Canine Companions Veterans Initiative provides highly trained service dogs, at no cost to veterans and active duty

Applications Are Now Open for Suffolk Legislature’s 2021 Page Program Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has announced that applications are being accepted for the 2021 Page Program. Approaching its seventh year, the legislature’s Page Program is an immersive summer internship program that gives college students the opportunity to learn about county government and public service. The 2021 program will run for 12 weeks, beginning with an orientation on May 21 and culminating in a graduation ceremony on Aug. 6. Nearly 30 students participated in last year’s

program, which went fully remote as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s program will be remote as well, offering students the ability to participate virtually via Zoom. “This summer program has been designed to provide the guidance and training students need to become the next generation of leaders,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “They will see firsthand what it is like to work in government and develop leadership skills that build confidence. Last year’s remote program was tremendously successful, and we look forward to once again providing a

meaningful experience for our Pages.” Participants will connect with legislators, elected officials, and policymakers from throughout Suffolk County, participate in an online mock legislature, and attend weekly virtual workshops on leadership

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited.
