Golf Classic Set Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is teeing up its 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament on Monday, May 16th, 2016 at Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury. The annual event, which is again sponsored by Astoria Bank, will offer golfers an opportunity to

And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying

signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parent-present counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day, and the expanding need for services is staggering,” said LICADD Executive Director

Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “We need our community to become a part of the solution by participating in the TeeOff for Our Teens and supporting programs that save teen’s lives and restore families.” For 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. As I often do when beset with burdens, I took to the wharf down by the bay To view the choppy waters have their way. Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. It’s nice to know there are others Eager to find a moment like this And take the time to explore. Refreshed and encouraged, I began to take my leave, And in the rearview mirror the scene began to fade; But the choice to come was a choice well made.

All-USA Scholars

Suffolk County Community College students Amie Bernstein and Elisandra Fini have been named one of the top 20 two-year college students in the nation as a member of the 2016 All-USA Community College Academic Team. The competition included more than 1,900 nominees from more than 1,000 community colleges across the U.S. and evaluated students on grades, leadership, activities and their contributions outside of the classroom. The pair were recognized with fellow team members during the American Association of Community Colleges national convention in Chicago, IL on April 12th. Bernstein and Fini will each receive a $5,000 scholarship. Amie Bernstein, a liberal

arts and psychology major, from Holbrook, with a 3.7 grade point average, serves as the International vice president for Division I of Phi Theta Kappa and was a former chapter and regional president. Amie hopes to transfer to Indiana University in Bloomington or the University of Mississippi to study Psychology. Elisandra Fini, a chemical dependency counseling major, from Huntington, with a 4.0 grade point average serves as vice-president of Phi Theta Kappa, and is a Get There From Here Scholar. Elisandra hopes to transfer to St. Joseph’s College to pursue a B.A. in Adolescent Education. “This is an outstanding achievement for Elisandra and Amie,” Suffolk County Community College

Bakery Expo

Annmarie Trksak, a Suffolk County Community College Culinary student took home a second place trophy at the prestigious 2016 Atlantic Bakery Expo presented by the New Jersey Bakers Board of Trade and the New

York State Association of Manufacturing Retail Bakers recently. Trksak’s entry, Noah’s Ark, was an ark shaped rolled fondant cake with pairs of fondant animals on the deck of the ark. Trksak’s prize included

$200, a trophy and medal. Trksak, from Holbrook, plans to complete her certificate program studies at Suffolk County Community College in May of 2017.

LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED - The Town of Islip recently held its 38th Annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring dozens of students from throughout Islip Town in various scholastic and extra-curricular categories. In addition to recognizing students who have earned high marks in academic subjects, the ceremony also honors students who have made accomplishments in community service efforts, school clubs and athletics. This year, roughly forty students received awards before a recent Town Board meeting.

GUEST SPEAKER - Congressman Pete King recently spoke to the AP Government class at Bayport-Blue Point High School. Rep. King discussed his role in Congress as well as the upcoming election. The Congressman noted that the students were an “impressive group who were very informed on major national issues.”

On October 25th, 2015, during a ceremony held at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville,

North Carolina, Richard Sele, a 1979 graduate of Sayville High School, was promoted to Brigadier General in the United States Army Reserve. He is currently serving as deputy commanding general of the 108th Training Command (IET), headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and on April 14th, 2016 he was inducted into the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Hall of Fame during a ceremony at North Carolina A&T State

University. During his military career, he was awarded the Bronze Star, as well as many other prestigious medals, including five meritorious awards. Brig. General Sele is also an accomplished artist. On April 18th, Councilmen Kevin LaValle and Neil Foley visited Sachem East High School in Farmingville to honor Student of the Month Matthew Ryder. In addition to being a strong student

academically, Matthew plays on both the soccer and tennis teams at the school, as well as outside leagues. This past year he was invited to and attended the National Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Championships

in Orlando, Florida. He was the only student from Sachem East to receive this honor. Upon graduation, Matthew will attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he will major in Actuarial Science.

Birds of a Feather

Special Career Education high school students and three and four year-old preschoolers were treated to a Cornell Cooperative Extension presentation, Birds of a Feather. The presentation included a story, a craft, and a hands-on experience with a chicken and a duck. Agricultural Educator June DeVitto brought a domestic chicken, Butterscotch, and an Indian Runner Duck, Fudgecake, to the Early

Childhood Education (ECE) Program at Islip Career Center in Eastern Suffolk BOCES. DeVitto has been an educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension for over 22 years and is amazed at how many people have never touched a chicken or a duck. “The presentation is geared to the preschoolers but it is a learning experience for everyone,” she said. ECE Teacher Rachel Grodofsky said, “This presentation offers

something to both the high school and preschool audience. It highlights comprehension skills. The high school students learn how to work with very inquisitive young minds; best of all, everyone gets to use their five senses.” High school students in the ECE Program are preparing for careers working with children. They are getting career ready to be camp counselors, work in nursery schools, or as child care providers. Grodofsky said, “These high school students are learning how to be effective classroom leaders.” June DeVitto wanted everyone to learn how to handle animals properly and to be gentle. “Kids grow up and they want a pet,” she said. “I want them to learn about the animal world and gain a respect for life. I want them to use their senses and I hope the program heightens their awareness of other things that are around them in the world.”

Science Fair Competition Connetquot School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students recently took part in the District’s 2016 Science Fair Competition. The annual program invites students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade to submit projects including charts, experiments, demos, diagrams and collections

The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with lovedones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “We are so excited that this year’s event was so successful,” said Linda Bily, Director, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, “the funds

Faculty Feud

Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School Principal James T. Williams recently welcomed students, faculty, families and community members to the school’s 8th annual “Faculty Feud,” an adaptation of the television game show “Family Feud.”

More than 30 faculty, staff and Parent-Teacher Association members formed teams to compete against one another by answering survey questions created by Cherokee Street Elementary School students. Teacher Mr. Cavanagh served as the Master of Ceremonies,

host and comedian while students in the audience cheered enthusiastically for their favorite teachers and teams. The purpose of this event was to intellectually challenge students in a fun, creative way.

Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers. The night kicked off at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these

Scam Alert Site In 2012, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker partnered with the Suffolk County Police Department to create a scam alert website, www.scpdscamalert.org. The website was one of Legislator Anker’s first initiatives upon entering office, and is an important resource to warn residents about common phone and internet scams, and illegal money schemes. Since launching the website in 2012, Legislator Anker has worked diligently with the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and

Consumer Affairs, and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office to provide residents with the most up-todate information and a more user-friendly, interactive experience. The updated website contains more links and resources with valuable information about how to avoid becoming a scam victim. On the website, along with information about common scams, you can now find a link to the Suffolk County Wall of Shame Registry, which lists the individuals and companies who have been found in violation of Suffolk County’s Licensing

Law, as well as information about how to report a scam. “In the past week I’ve received several scam phone calls. Residents need to be vigilant against unsolicited phone calls and internet scams. It is important to never provide personal information to someone you do not know,” Legislator Anker. “I urge residents to be alert and to utilize the updated website and its resources.” To report a scam, please contact the Suffolk County Police Department by calling 631.852.COPS (2677).

AWARENESS WALK HELD - On Saturday, April 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, President of Sarcoidosis of Long Island Frank Rivera and the many members and supporters of the not-for-profit organization Sarcoidosis of Long Island at the 2nd Annual Sarcoidosis Awareness Walk held at the North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. The walk was an effort to raise awareness about the rare disease, Sarcoidosis, which is caused by the collection of inflammatory cells that affect the organs and immune system.
