Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.
If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

Deputy Presiding Office Rob Calarco announced he will be hosting a business summit and informational event called “Charting the Course” (CTC) on Monday, June 19th. CTC will bring together local businesses with key government agencies in an effort to support local economic development in the Seventh District. Nearly 400 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th-30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service, and volunteer firefighters will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children. “Joining the volunteer fire service has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I know I am not alone in saying that,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “Hundreds of volunteer fire departments across New York will be participating in RecruitNY, and we invite all New Yorkers to visit with their local firehouses. Visitors may be surprised to find their very own neighbors and friends already serving in the fire department, and just may be inspired to join them in protecting the community.” The volunteer fire service is an integral part of both life and the economy in New York State. In 2016, FASNY released an economic impact report, which quantifies the value of the volunteer fire service and its associated tax savings throughout the state. The report concluded that the annual cost of a replacement, all-paid fire service
would be $3.87 billion. Furthermore, property taxes in New York State would rise by an estimated average of 26.5%. These figures do not factor in the costs of acquiring the necessary facilities and equipment needed to accommodate a paid fire service. The volunteer fire service, and efforts like RecruitNY, make the State not only safer, but also more affordable. Established in 2011, RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC), Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York. initiative spearheaded by Connetquot High School Special Education teacher Peggy Dinkleman and the Blue Star Mothers of America organization. The national Blue Star Mothers of America was formed in 1942, while America was deeply involved in World War II.

Today, Blue Star Mothers do what they can to support those who are in the service. Members spread awareness, attend local fairs and events, collect donations and continue to remind our servicemen and women that they are appreciated and respected.

Keep Islip Clean Commisioner Kay Erwood and Suffolk County American Legion Auxiliary 1st VP Joan Smith with unit members, and many hands from the Community, recycled more than 5,000 unused greeting cards that were collected by Keep Islip Clean to be recycled. The cards were distributed to Northport
VA hospital residents and Stony Brook State Veteran home residents. There enough to send to our military personal overseas, along with local unit Chaplin throughout Suffolk County. In addition, one of our sister auxiliary units in Albany will get a supply of cards to use for their project at their local
airport. A great big thank you to all who came to our “card party” separating cards by topic, finding envelopes for mailing, etc. It was a project we made work and VP Smith was excited that the cards were able to be used by so many veterans, their families and our military.

A Champagne Brunch was held by The Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC), under the leadership of its president, Frances Rotondo, at The Woodlands of Woodbury to pay tribute to the founders of the many women’s clubs that make up this Federation. This was the second such event in two years and was attended by over 100 members. President Rotondo read part of a beautiful poem entitled, Phenomenal Women, by Maya Angelou and then introduced the LIFWC Board and Department Heads. Five speakers from various
clubs inspired guests with many interesting and fascinating stories about their club founders. Some of the original club founders were women who rolled bandages during WWI, who marched for the Women’s Suffragette Movement in the early 1900’s, who organized 80% of the nation’s libraries and who served as hostesses for visiting international guests at the 1939 World’s Fair. This year’s guest speaker was Donna Scherer, former President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NY 2008-10. In addition to holding many chairmanships, Ms.
Scherer was also Mayor of the Village of Bellerose. Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Practical Nursing and Clinical Medical Assisting Programs participated in a two-day Alzheimer’s Association and HealthCare InteractiveÒ Training Program in Brentwood. Community Education Manager Robert Schuster, M.S.Ed., and Community Educator Angie Avila provided the training. Upon completion of the training program, the students took a test to receive a CARESÒ Dementia Basics™ 4-Hour Online Training Program Certificate of Completion. The CARESÒ Approach is a person-centered approach for dementia caregivers. Students learned that it’s important to meet the needs of the
person by Connecting with the person, Assessing their Behavior, Responding appropriately, Evaluating what works, and Sharing what worked with others. Kayla Pilch, from Lake Grove, is graduating this year and will go on to take the New York State Licensing Examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She thought the training was extremely beneficial. “The training included modules, case scenarios, videos, and skills methodology,” she said. The students learned how to approach a person, how to communicate with someone who is verbal and non-verbal, and what to look for when they see repetitive movements, like foot or hand tapping.
