LITTLE LEAGUE OPENING - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen and Department of Public Works Commissioner Tom Owens visited the ballpark recently, to help ring in Bayport Blue Point’s 2018 Little League Season. Ceremonies began with the opening day parade, led by the Suffolk County Emerald Society Pipe Band, as teams gathered for what looks to be a promising baseball season for the over 500 participating young athletes.

Members of BayportBlue Point High School’s Peer Education Program recently welcomed a group of students from Amityville High School for a Cultural Exchange event, held at the Bayport-Blue Point High School on April 10th. After being welcomed to the school with a stunning display of musical talent courtesy of the BayportBlue Point High School chamber orchestra, the Amityville High School students greeted their friends with smiles on their faces. The purpose of the Cultural Exchange program is to build new friendships and create bonds between students from different school districts. This was the

second time that both Amityville High School and Bayport-Blue Point High School participated in the event this school year, with the first event taking place this past fall. After a complimentary breakfast, the students took part in a series of icebreaker activities with assistance from Suffolk County Health Department Representative John Martin, who helped develop the BBP program with high school psychologist Dayna Russo. “The Cultural Diversity Day is beneficial in many ways, as it allows students to experience and challenge their assumptions and judgments about other districts and students,” said Mrs. Russo. “It also creates

connections between students who may have never had the opportunity to meet, simply because of where they live. Each school has a culture that could be misunderstood by an outsider and it is an important piece in transitioning from high school to adult life to take the time to understand others before judgement. This year, witnessing the students connect, recognize, evaluate, and talk about the differences between their schools and cultures was empowering to watch.” Before leaving for the day, each Amityville student was paired up with a Bayport-Blue Point student and attended several classes together.

Every year, high school students plan and prep for their upcoming prom. Finding the right dress, saying yes to the right date, and attending the best after-party. It’s supposed to be the perfect night – but that could all end in an instant. To keep teens and drivers safe this prom season, the Community Ambulance Company partnering with Suffolk Legislator William Lindsay and Youth Enrichment Services (YES) is again implementing a prevention program to offer FREE prom and banquet transportation to those students from the Bayport, Connetquot and Sayville School Districts.

Clinical Nurse Assisting (CNA) students from the Academy at Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale recently visited a sophisticated nursing simulation lab to learn and practice industry skills such as wound care, patient assessment, and managing medical equipment. Students did so with high-fidelity, life-size mannequins while under the guidance of other students and instructors in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program. The lab and LPN Program are based in the Eastern Suffolk

BOCES Adult Education Center in Brentwood. The CNA students are part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES). Collaboration across the numerous ESBOCES programs provides students with in-depth, real-life perspectives and opportunities to utilize valuable hands-on applications. This included taking a culture, venting the area with a suction tube, and donning isolation protection gear to prevent microorganism contamination. Said Gina Marie Martin, Nurse Assisting teacher, “The goal here is to see if my students want to continue their education by applying for the LPN program. Our sim lab is the closest they will get to doing the level of work LPNs do. Therefore, there is no better place for them to make that determination than here.”

On April 13th, Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco joined hundreds of members of the Patchogue-

Medford community to congratulate the 2018 inductees of the Patchogue-Medford Hall of

Fame. This year’s new members included teachers, athletes, a world class musician and Sam Stahlman, a World War II veteran of the D-Day Invasion and Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Stahlman was a local businessman, a substitute teacher and a volunteer coach for the high school varsity football team. “The PatchogueMedford community is proud of our veterans, and Mr. Stahlman is a shining example of the best of our local residents,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “I am so proud of this year’s inductees and I congratulate them on this honor.”

Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship. The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton. Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship. She

spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf

Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and George Washington at Valley Forge. Her other portraits are of pets, houses, cars, boats, motorcycles and planes, all painted in selected scenes. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. Unveiling of the U.S. Open Top Secret painting will be on Sunday, April 29th at the Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell Street, Bellport at 3 p.m. An artist reception will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and refreshments will be served. off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

Students Share Lessons In an effort to help students build multilingual skills, fifth-graders at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School were recently visited by Bayport-Blue Point High School students from Melanie Vieira’s and Kerri McGuire’s Spanish 4 and 5 classes for a “Cultural Breakfast and Book Exchange,” an initiative sponsored by the SEED foundation. Throughout the course of the event, the fifth-graders were given the opportunity to showcase the books they made in their Spanish

classes, and explain to the upperclassmen fun facts about themselves using the Spanish language. Additionally, a large feast was prepared for the students, and they were asked to place their order for such items as empanadas and mango nectar while using their newly adopted language skills. The exchange served as the conclusion of the Spanish portion of the Foreign Language Experience Program at Sylvan Elementary, which

begins in grade 3 and continues through grade 5. “Our district is one of only a handful that offers an elementary level second language program,” said ESL/world languages teacher Sally Miller. “Not only is it beneficial for students, but they highly enjoy taking part in it as well.” Both Academy Street Elementary School and Blue Point Elementary School hosted a similar event to this in December 2017.

VFW Post Reopens Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco was on hand to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Henry James Jones VFW Post 2937 in Medford. After an extensive renovation, the century-old structure is ready once again to host meetings and community events. “This has been an extensive renovation that the entire community can be proud of,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “The Veterans have a beautiful space they

Best in Show Four students from the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology received “Best in Show” distinctions at the recent Long Island Media Arts Show held in Dix Hills at the Five Towns College campus. Drug Take-Back Day Nine Northwell Health facilities will be participating in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28th, which is an opportunity for people to take unused and expired prescriptions and safely remove them from their homes. Southside Hospital in Bay Shore; Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead; Huntington Hospital; North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset; Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park; Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco; Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow; and Lenox Hill Hospital and Lenox Health Greenwich Village in Manhattan will have receptacles at the hospitals for people to safely deposit these leftover prescriptions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Northwell Health collected more than 300 pounds of unused prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day last October. The latest event is organized by the Drug Enforcement Association. “It was so gratifying to see the large quantity of unneeded and expired drugs brought to Northwell Health facilities last drug take back day in October,” said Peg Butler, Northwell Health’s assistant vice president of marketing and external relations who helped organize last year’s efforts in Manhattan as well as this year’s receptacles. “We’ll dispose of a lot more this year as we double the number of Northwell

facilities participating. We want to do everything we can to keep these drugs from falling in to the wrong hands. This is a hugely important community service we’re proud to provide.” Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experiment with opiates or other drugs. Northwell Health has made one of its missions to help curb the opioid epidemic in New York State through its Northwell Health Opioid Management Steering Committee, which is an outgrowth of the successful pilot program at Southside Hospital. There were 2,726 deaths related to opioids in New York State in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. New York City saw 893 of those deaths; there were 463 more on Long Island. “Hearing these staggering numbers each year breaks my heart and has prompted us at Northwell Health to aggressively work in a variety of ways to try to lessen the amount of opiate and prescription drug abuse in our area,” said Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, assistant vice president of addiction services at Northwell Health. “People bringing their unused prescriptions to these sites can help us make an impact on the opioid epidemic.” In addition to removing unused prescriptions drugs from the community,

Northwell Health is working on several initiatives to target opioid abuse from screening and life-saving techniques to offering treatment: Northwell’s screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) program helps identify potential issues by screening patients during routine medical visits. South Oaks Hospital in Amityville offers free naloxone training and rescue kits to community members. Naloxone, otherwise known as narcan, is a nasal spray that is used when someone has overdosed to try to reverse the situation. Northwell, in conjunction with the Engel Burman Group, are in the process of building a substance abuse treatment residence in Calverton on eastern long Island. Southside Hospital has a secure prescription return location available 24/7 in the hospital’s lobby. STEM Fair Held

Holy Trinity High School gym, Hicksville – The second annual Diocesan STEM Fair was held at Holy Trinity High School on Saturday and provided a showcase for many of the outstanding projects from individual Catholic elementary schools. The fair, which displayed and demonstrated 85 different student projects, highlights the rigorous STEM education programs that are in place at the Diocesan schools. The program, which is orchestrated by Assistant Superintendent Anthony Biscione brings together some of the best and brightest science students from all across Long Island. “The program is unique because it connects our schools at multiple levels.” Stated Biscione. All of the projects, which are created by elementary students, are peer reviewed by Honors science students from St. John the Baptist and Holy Trinity Diocesan high schools, by science teachers from the high schools, by educators from St. John’s University,

and by officials from LITEEA, the Long Island Technology Engineering Education Association” Biscione stated. In addition to the student’s exhibits in the gym, this year’s event included something called the ‘Mercy Contraption’, a Rube Goldberg type of device that was conceived, created and demonstrated by the students from Our Lady of Mercy elementary school in Hicksville. While each project demonstrated at the STEM Fair qualified to be part of the event by winning their respective local events, there were a number of projects identified and recognized at the STEM Fair for their outstanding effort. Projects were broken out into two levels; level one was for students from the 5th and 6th grades and level 2 was for 7th and 8th grade students. Because the focus is on helping students develop problem-solving skills, the students’ instructions were to pick a problem, identify a proposed solution, then create a prototype that demonstrates your

solution. The winning projects included the level 1 winner by Matthew Zaromatidis from Notre Dame School in New Hyde Park. Matthew’s project explored the design for earthquake-proof buildings. Of the level 2 competitors, the judges liked David Solan’s app for day-planning best. David is a student at St. Patrick School in Huntington. Each level recognized the top three projects and the winners took home gift cards of $75, 50 and 25 dollars respectively acknowledging their first, second or third place finishes. “Of course, each student who gets to this level is a winner” Stated Diocesan Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Walsh, “and each was recognized with a certificate in an award ceremony that followed the fair.” Walsh and Biscione personally handed out the awards and congratulated all of the participating students and their rightfully proud parents.

Protect Our Aquifer Day In the past, the groundwater beneath Long Island provided some of the finest drinking water in the world. Now, each year brings more news about the condition of Long Island’s groundwater, and not much of it is good. The 2018 Protect Our Aquifer Day programs in Suffolk on Thursday, May 3rd and in Nassau on Friday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. are the opportunity to hear experts discuss the science of Long Island groundwater, and legal approaches to provide more protection and oversight of the water supply on which Long Island relies. The Suffolk, May 3rd,

program will be held at Longwood Public Library, 800 Middle County Road, Middle Island. The Nassau, May 4th, program will be held at Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, 48 Shelter Rock Road, Manhasset. The presentations are similar at both locations. For the first time on Long Island, legal approaches to better manage water resources in New York State and Long Island will be discussed by a legal expert who successfully challenged water management practices in the state. Scientists will report on their latest findings and interpret what it means

for the sustainability of this essential natural resource - our drinking water. The latest research on saltwater intrusion; water conditions in the Pine Barrens, the impact of consumer product chemicals on groundwater; and the latest details on unregulated chemicals such as 1,4 Dioxane will all be included. Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community.
