Taiko Demonstration

oodhull Elementary School students were recently treated to a hands-on workshop and demonstration of taiko drumming by the members of the Ryu Shu Kan Japanese Arts Center. The performance included historical information about the practice, which originated in the religious customs of Japan nearly 1,500 years ago, and also featured excerpts of 20th century taiko compositions using different styles of drumming.

On Tuesday, April 8th, more than 350 of NYC’s elite came out to support the American Heart Association at their kickoff event for the 18th Annual Heart of the Hamptons Ball. The kick off, held at Tao Downtown Lounge and put together by Heart of the Hamptons committee members Paola Bacchini, Andrea Tese, Nur Khan, Peter Davis, Paul Goldstein, Rocco Ancarola and Cristina Civetta. Surrounded by amazing Geisha’s guests in attendance were able to listen to survivors Rocco Ancarola, Arnie Rosenshein and Cristina Civetta share their stories of survival. They urged the crowd to get checked and pay attention to their heart health. This year’s Heart of the Hamptons Ball will be taking place on Saturday, June 28th, at the Hayground School in Bridgehampton. This year, the Heart Ball will honor Dr. Leonard Girardi, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon, New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center with the Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished Leadership award will be presented to Samuel L. through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Suffolk County United Veterans received another visit to the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with 652 pounds of fresh produce and 181 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items. The donation was for Veterans and their family members in need which helped to

provide over 541 meals, and which supplements items available at the Food Pantry, which receives funding throughout the year from Long Island Cares to stock its shelves. “The work SCUV does in helping align veterans with everything they need ranging from housing to job development programs is inspiring, and Long Island Cares is proud to

partner with them as much as possible to support their vital work,” said Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Public Policy, The Chapin Center for Public Policy, Long Island Cares. Ms. Massimo, Program Director for Suffolk County United Veterans added, “We are grateful

FIRST Robotics Legislator Tom Cilmi attended the FIRST Robotics Competition held at Hofstra University on March 28th and 29th and congratulated students from Connetquot, Hauppauge and Central Islip robotics teams on their involvement. FIRST is, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. One of many programs the organization sponsors, the annual robotics competition began in 1992 in a New Hampshire High School gymnasium and has evolved into a competition reaching close to a quarter million high school students. Students raise money to purchase a standard kit

of parts and may further enhance their robots within limits if they so choose. Each year a new task is selected and robots are designed by students with the help of advisors in order to best accomplish that task. Participating teams from school districts from Long Island and beyond are randomly paired up with another team to foster additional teamwork at the competition. Each “alliance” then faces another and competes for points. Winning teams may go on to compete in the national competition, being held this year in St. Louis, Missouri. This year robots were tasked with picking up, catching and tossing balls

over a truss and through goals. Participants are competing for more than $19 million of scholarships. “Not only does FIRST provide a competitive opportunity for students who may not be involved in sports,” said Cilmi, “but it gives them a chance to work with students from other areas. Students gain practical experience in a number of different fields including marketing, fundraising, information technology and engineering, in addition to learning the importance of teamwork, of leadership and of perseverance. It gives students a taste of real life and the lessons are truly invaluable.”

visited. During the interactive program, the congressman spoke about his role on the Homeland Security Committee, matters of foreign policy and discussed domestic concerns around

entitlement reform and the escalating cost of college. Students had the chance to ask insightful and well thought out questions and were enthusiastic about the visit.

Transitioning one’s child from high school to college or the workforce is always filled with many options and questions. This issue is even more complex for a student with special needs. Experts at Nassau

BOCES Department of Special Education offered parents answers to these questions with its Transition Expo. More than 200 parents of special needs students attended the expo to meet with

representatives from over 50 agencies and programs, and to attend workshops. “Nassau BOCES is the largest provider of Special Education in the county with almost 50 years of experience. We have

developed agreements and relationships with many organizations over the years and our exhibitors state that they come to this seminar because of the access to so many parents,” says Nassau BOCES Psychologist Dr. Linda Lopez. Vendors are from a variety of services including the Office of Mental Health, local colleges, counseling centers and Nassau BOCES programs. The Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) conducted a workshop explaining its

vocational rehabilitation and independent living programs as well as how to help eligible individuals with disabilities to obtain employment. “I am amazed at the turnout Nassau BOCES gets and the details of the event are handled well,” exclaimed Julie Yindra, Director of Services for Students with Disabilities at Hofstra University. She presented a workshop on college planning issues and services for students with disabilities. Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain

a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information. Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive. There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

Environmentalist Of The Year Recognized for their great contributions to environmental education, the two distinguished recipients of the Sierra Club Long Island 2013 Environmentalist of the Year Award were Maria Brown, Sayville High School’s Science Research Teacher and Eileen Gerle, a Marine Educator for Brookhaven Township. Woodhull Elementary School students were recently treated to a hands-on workshop and demonstration of taiko drumming by the members of the Ryu Shu Kan Japanese Arts Center. The performance included historical information about the drumming practice, which originated in the religious customs of Japan nearly 1,500 years ago, and also

featured excerpts of 20th century taiko compositions using different styles of drumming. The Japanese word “taiko” means “big drum,” and when students gathered in the gymnasium to play on seven taiko drums at once, it was indeed a big sound. The workshop reinforced student learning about rhythm as well as the third-grade social studies

curriculum, which focuses in part on Japanese culture. Interest among students in all grades was high. They asked about how the drums were made, where they could be found today, and whether people make a living out of performing taiko music. “I’m never leaving this place!” said kindergartner John Tsaousis, after enjoying his turn on a drum.

Student Artwork Showcase only accepts approximately 80 pieces of work each year. Besides the honor of being selected to exhibit in this juried student art show, several scholarships and awards are given. Prior to making their submissions, the students were asked to look at artwork in the museum during the school year (in

person or online) and use one of the museum’s works as inspiration for a piece. In addition to their art submission, each student wrote a brief essay about the inspirational work as it related to their work. The inspirational work and essay were mounted and placed next to the student work in the gallery.

Bayport-Blue Point School District has been named a 2014 Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. This year, 376 school districts were chosen out of more than 2,000 national applicants. This award recognizes that the district has set the bar high for music education by offering students access to a comprehensive music program that is part of the core curriculum. Paul Weber, Chairperson for Art and Music states, “This distinction from the NAMM Foundation proves the support and dedication that the Community, Board of Education, and District Administration give to the Arts Program here in Bayport-Blue Point Schools. This is an honor that we all share and should be proud of”. The Bayport-Blue Point School District currently offers instrumental instruction in the areas of orchestra and band to students in grades 4 through 12. Vocal instruction is offered

to students in grades 3 through 12. In addition to these performance groups, students are able to advance their knowledge of the discipline of music by enrolling in extracurricular performing groups (Instrumental Jazz Ensembles, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Chamber Orchestras), Music Department Electives (Music Theory, Comprehensive Foundations of Music), and Advanced Placement Music Theory. Elementary Classroom Music Instruction is provided in Kindergarten through grade 5, and General Music instruction is also provided in grades 6 through 8. Also to be mentioned are the All-District Band, Chorus, and Orchestra Performing Groups, and the awardwinning High School Musical Production. Now in its 15th year, the BCME program evaluates schools and districts based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards, and access to music

instruction. The NAMM Foundation, with the assistance of researchers at the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service of Lawrence, Kansas (an affiliate of the University of Kansas), evaluate participants on these factors. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and greater access to music education. “These schools and districts make a strong commitment to music education in the core curriculum, supporting its essential value to a well-rounded education for every child,” said Mary Luehrsen, NAMM Foundation executive director. “Strong, engaging programs that offer students access to music cannot thrive in a vacuum. The Best Communities designation and the SupportMusic Merit Award bring hard-won visibility to music classes, programs and departments that are keeping music education alive in our schools.”

Philip M. Mickulas, president and chief executive officer of the Family & Children’s Association, was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Mickulas represented the Family & Children’s Association, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

With more than 200 volunteers, corporate groups, community groups and sponsors, the association offers community-based counseling, family support and educational programs to children and families, to promote self-sufficiency and foster positive outcomes. Programs begin at five months of age and extend through secondary school, to ensure that each child is given every opportunity to succeed in school and in life. Among its key initiatives is the Youth Advisory Council, an opportunity for Long Island youth to serve as decision-makers, to positively impact their community, and to broaden their perspectives. Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Campus Recreation Field Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the southeast corner of the South P parking area of the campus. Stony Brook University students will have primary use of the three competition size turf and grass fields which measure over nine square acres and include lights for evening practice and competition. Stony Brook University now provides double the amount of recreational field space previously available to students prior to refurbishment. Fields A and B are both fitted with lighting and bleacher and bench seating and fields A, B and C have netting to prevent balls from leaving the fields. Speakers at the ceremony included Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University, John Flanagan, New York State Senator (2nd Senate District), Kathryn Michaud, SBU’s Women’s Club Soccer Team and Vice President of Sports Club Council and Matthew Graham, ‘11 B.Eng, past President of the Undergraduate Student Government

and former member of the Men’s Rugby Club. “It is important that the university provide recreational facilities indoor and outdoor for our student clubs to practice and compete,” said Dr. Stanley. “Stony Brook is committed to the total well-being of our students and by

providing access to quality, contemporary and modern facilities, we are able to achieve these goals. On behalf of our students, I want to thank Senator Flanagan who was able to identify and secure more than $100,000 in funding to make these field upgrades possible.”

Education Partner Diane Berger, principal of the Children’s Learning Center at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc., (CLC-UCP) was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Berger represented the CLC-UCP, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “The philosophy that drives our school is that each of our students deserve the best of what their peers in public school receive, and we are determined to give that to them,” said Principal Diane Berger. “We believe that CLC makes a major impact on public education by

being a partner in caring about students and directly providing the foundation they need to succeed. CLC is a special education school with an emphasis on the word ‘special.’” The Children’s Learning Center has been serving special needs children on Long Island for more than 60 years, with an annual enrollment of 250. Students with moderate to severe disabilities from the ages 1-21 are served by a devoted faculty consisting of more than 200

educators, clinicians, support staff and administrators. Each year, approximately 45 preschool students graduate from the center and return to their home districts. Students receive special education and therapeutic services in a state-of-the-art educational setting that includes a smartboard in every classroom, music and art therapy, and numerous exracurriculars including

clubs, field trips and special events. Among the activities available to students are Boy and Girl Scouts, chorus, cheerleading, dance team, and a trio of ballet clubs that have performed at the Tilles Center. They enjoy special events such as concerts and plays, Homecoming and Prom, and embark on field trips including overnight camping trips, attendance at Broadway plays and museum sleepovers. The center’s mission is “to provide the highest quality services to the children and adults,” and a large contributing factor to the success of that mission is the CLC’s long-standing, mutually supportive relationships with Long Island school districts. CLC faculty works closely with district staff to assess student progress and plan for the future. But the partnership goes beyond educators and curriculum — the students get involved as well. The Roosevelt High School championship football team, cheerleaders and marching band take part in the center’s Homecoming Parade each year. The Carle Place and West Islip high school bands and orchestras perform regularly at CLC assemblies. And for the past 15 years, the Wheatley School has sponsored a student carnival for the center and annually invites CLC classes to join them for Wheatley’s Intercultural Unity Day.
