Supporting Music For the fourth time in five years, Woodhull has been honored with the Support Music Merit Award from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. This award is part of NAMM’s “Best Communities for Music Education� survey, which this year recognized 92 schools and 527 school districts across America for providing outstanding
music education for students. The criteria for the award is determined through a district-certified survey addressing every aspect of school music programs, including funding, scheduling, resources, programming, enrollment, staffing, community participation and opportunities. In all of these areas, Fire Island

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps
the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

A Moment in Time
The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to announce that Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Timothy Hearney has been appointed Superintendent of the Bayport-Blue Point School District, effective July 10th, 2017. “I am honored and humbled to have been selected to lead an extraordinary staff in the community of BayportBlue Point. As a team we will continue to provide our students with the necessary tools, opportunities and support
to be successful,” said Dr. Hearney. Dr. Hearney is no stranger to the BayportBlue Point School District, as he has served as both a principal of Bayport-Blue Point High School and a central office administrator prior to his current role. During the past nine years, Dr. Hearney cultivated a team that improved the district’s advanced Regents diploma rate 14 percent, doubled Advanced Placement offerings for students and implemented a first-class leadership curriculum. Under his direction, the
district has introduced the Teacher College writing initiative in the elementary schools, built a community-based schoolto-business partnership and received a Blue Ribbon nomination from the New York State Department of Education. “This decision was based on the years of high-quality experience, service and outcomes Dr. Hearney has worked to deliver for the BayportBlue Point community,” said Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education President Michael Miller. “As the steward of our instructional programs, Dr. Hearney has helped us achieve at the highest levels, he is highly regarded by our staff and our families, and we look forward to him taking the reins in July.” Dr. Hearney succeeds current Superintendent Dr. Vincent Butera, who has served as the Superintendent of Bayport-Blue Point School District since late 2012. Quackerjack, along with his friend Drew Mongiello, stopped by to remind students and staff that Sycamore students will be singing the national anthem at the team’s May 5th game against the Maryland Blue Crabs.
Care & Support Student leaders at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently collected snacks, toiletries, and various care package items to be sent to American servicemen and women currently protecting our country in collaboration with an initiative spearheaded by Connetquot High School Special Education teacher Peggy Dinkleman and the Blue Star Mothers of America organization. The national Blue Star Mothers of America was formed in 1942, while America was deeply involved in World War II. Today, Blue Star Mothers do what they can to support those who are in the service. Members spread awareness, attend local fairs and events, collect donations and continue to remind our servicemen and women that they are appreciated and respected.

DINOSAUR LESSON - On Wednesday April 5th, students in grades 5-8 at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip, attended the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to explore a special exhibit regarding dinosaurs. The exhibit is meant to give students a stronger understanding of evolution and the geologic timeline while connecting to popular culture through the movie Jurassic World. The hands on museum also gave students the opportunity to explore all facets of science through inquiry in its purest form. All of the students had a great time!

of C-Quest advisors Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages over the course of the program. Within the classes, students are introduced to the French, Spanish, Italian and German languages and culture, as they spend a few weeks learning each new
language. Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth-andfifth grade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.
Garden Design Students, teachers and staff members at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed Peter Walsh and Sue Avery from the Seatuck Environmental Organization of Islip to work with students in designing a special garden in front of the school.
“The garden will contain a variety of species from around Long Island and will serve as a learning science laboratory for the Cherokee community,” said Cherokee Street Elementary School second-grade teacher Sandra Fantauzzi. “Over time, we will look to collect and propagate plant
material in order to expand the garden and further support the preservation of Long Island’s native plant populations.” Students were actively involved in designing the garden, and indicated that they were eager to see the plant life grow once planting begins in June of 2017.

Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted its first annual “Heritage Museum Day,” inviting students’ family members and Connetquot High School students to the school in an effort to promote a widespread cultural understanding and respect for the many customs throughout the world. Throughout the halls of
the school, each classroom featured a foreign learning environment where Connetquot High School volunteers were able to shed light onto customs and activities that the younger students were able to enjoy. Such presentations included information about the World Cup and why so many countries hold the sport of soccer dear to their heart, art lessons in the style of the ever popular
Japanese Anime and fun classroom activities which taught children how to perform a traditional Greek dance. Additionally, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a cultural museum, where multiple displays were set up with factual information about countries around the world, including but not limited to China, Israel, France and Germany.

Resident Recognition The Bayport-Blue Point School District recently hosted its 10th annual Senior Resident Recognition Dinner and Evening of Music as a means of thanking the senior citizens of the BBP community for all of their continued support of the LESSON IN GOVT - On Thursday, April 6th, Councilman Kevin LaValle visited schools, community and Sachem Central School District’s Sagamore Middle School to speak with 6th grade students. The Councilman and the students discussed local government projects going on in our community and he gave them the opportunity to ask questions. On Friday, March 24th, the Connetquot Public Library took part in the Advanced Battle of the Books held at Connetquot High School. This is a county-wide competition for teens in grades 9-12 from all participating Suffolk County libraries. Twenty libraries participated in the competition. Teams answered trivia questions

who take part. Teen librarian Angela Breslin was proud of her team. A special thanks to Children’s librarians Dina Oliveira, who was a judge, Jacquelyn DiLorenzo and Tara Kelly-Cooper, who were scorekeepers. The teens are a vital part of the library, the community and the family.
