South Country BOE Celebrates The Efforts Of ‘Frozen Jr.’ Cast And Crew

During the March 11 South Country Central School District Board of Education meeting, the trustees recognized those who contributed to the great success of the Bellport Middle School production of “Frozen Jr.,” held on Jan. 17-18. Principal Dr. Jamal Colson said the musical positively impacted the students and community in many ways and that it was more than just a culmination of a weekend event. The musical promoted lifelong goals for many
students, such as acting and singing opportunities or careers in construction, sound and lighting,” Dr. Colson explained to the board of education. “Students learned to work together toward a common goal with the three A’s – attendance, attitude and achievement.” Staff members Michele Stiriz (director), Sean Austin (musical producer), Oya Bangura (choreographer), Alicia Ferrara (costume designer), Nicolette Clock (assistant producer) and Kieran
Sawyer (stage manager) were congratulated. Dr. Colson also introduced shining principal cast members Madison Aruta (townsperson and an Oaken family member), Alexa Allan (Elsa), Kaelyn Schmidt (Anna), Max Yablon (Kristof), Mason Linke (Hans), Madison Roberts (Sven), Jacob Chojnacki (Olaf), Gael Michel (Pabbie), Samantha DeLillo (snow chorus) and Rileigh Picken (Queen Iduna).

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently hosted its third annual Senecon pop culture event during which established authors, illustrators and performers visited to share their specialties with students. Throughout the day, students traveled around the building to classrooms dedicated to specific presentations by talented professionals from multiple
disciplines. Among the presentations students attended were origami with artists Shrikant Iyer and Jacqueline Billig, illustration with David O. Miller, an art workshop presented by Imagine That! which introduced students to famous artist Jackson Pollack’s work, comic drawing with Marvel artist Billy Tucci, Manga style comic artist Misako Rocks! and a
captivating combination of art and storytelling with Christopher Agostino, who painted several students’ faces to coincide with folktales he told from around the world. Additionally, students learned tips and tricks from ventriloquist Jonathan Geffner, explored music and sound with Brent Daniels and learned to play harmonica with Jim Turner.

Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge Grant Seeks to Raise $1,000,000 Matching Grant of Up to $500,000 Will Help Keep Healthcare Professionals Safe in Their Fight Against COVID-19 Long Island Community Hospital has announced that the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge has awarded a $500,000 matching grant made possible by the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19. “I’m extremely grateful and proud to announce this new initiative from the Knapp Family, valued members of our LI Community Hospital family, that will greatly enhance our ability to fight COVID-19 right here in our community,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at LI Community Hospital. The Knapp Family will match every donation, dollar for dollar up to $500,000 to directly purchase precious personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies, equipment and other items necessary to keep our healthcare professionals safe during this pandemic. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
