Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is hosting its inaugural Builder’s Breakfast on Thursday, April 16th at the Stonebridge Club in Smithtown. Sponsored by M&T Bank, the event will raise awareness and support for Habitat’s affordable homebuilding and repair programs in 2015. Walk For Victory The Marfan Foundation hosts its second annual Walk for Victory on Long Island on Saturday, May 2nd, at 12 p.m. at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in Woodbury. This mile-long walk is part of a nationwide program to help raise awareness and raise funds to create a brighter future for the many thousands of individuals and families
living with Marfan syndrome and related disorders. All funds raised go directly to The Marfan Foundation for its lifesaving patient support services and educational initiatives. Registration covers the entry fee into the walk, all snacks, games and activities. Every walker who raises at least $100 receives an exclusive

establish a selection committee, which reviews the accomplishments of exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office for a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who
would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

On Saturday, April 25th, the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) hit the track in their second home game of this season as they take on the Jerzey Derby Brigade (JDB) from Morristown, NJ. Last season, these two teams battled it out with SIDR taking the win both home and away. “This is by far one of the most physical teams we’ve played to date so it’s always an exciting time for fans,” said Doc Block, coach of the Strong Island Revolution. This exciting bout will take place at Strong Island’s home rink World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. In addition to hard hitting roller derby, the event features halftime entertainment, grass fed burgers and other menu items from Eat me Drink me food truck and cold craft beer provided by their
new sponsor Greenport Harbor Brewery. Fans who like to get close to the action are encouraged to bring a chair for trackside seating. There is also a balcony for a bird’s eye view of the bout. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the first whistle is at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 at http:sidr2015.bpt. me or $15 at the door. Kids under 8 are always free! Roller Derby’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December 2011 and the Fédéracion Internacional de Roller Sports (FIRS), recognized by the International Olympic Committee as governing body of roller sports, has added roller derby to its list of disciplines and the sport will be featured in the first World Roller Games to take place in Barcelona in 2017. Modern roller Derby teams (including SIDR) are DIY organizations with skaters not only training hard on the track but also
running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. SIDR is always actively recruiting skaters, referees, volunteers and sponsors. two “Heroes of the Night” at every home game for their selfless and courageous service to our country. Each Hero of the Night will receive ten complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends along with them. All “Heroes of the Night” ticket holders will also receive access to the Duck Club, the Long Island Duck’s elite restaurant and bar, reserved for season ticket and luxury suite holders, located on the club level directly behind home plate. “We are proud to honor those who have fought and continue to fight, to protect our freedom every day, says Ducks President/ GM Michael Pfaff. “Thanks to the NYCB and Suffolk

Keeping America Beautiful In the spirit of Earth Day, April 22nd, Keep Islip Clean (KIC), a certified affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful, and not-forprofit, 501c3, community service organization, is participating again in the Great American Cleanup. They will be working tirelessly throughout all of April and May, at various locations throughout the Town of Islip, to clean up and beautify our community. Below are the dates, times, and locations for the largest of the scheduled cleanups. Bayport-Blue Point’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-grade students embodied various historical figures as they participated in the building’s annual Wax Museum exhibition. Prior to the event, the students selected an individual of historical
importance and researched that person’s life and contributions. They created information posters to detail their findings and dressed as their chosen subject during the museum. At the event, the students remained still as if set in wax until visitors “brought
Battle Of The Books On Friday, March 13th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Advanced Battle of the Books held at Connetquot High School. The “battle” is a county wide inter-library competition consisting of teams answering trivia questions based on selected teen novels. This year’s titles were Anna and the French Kiss, Cinder and Where Things Come Back. La Neuf Connetquot Princesses tied for eighth place out of twenty-one teams led by Teen Librarian Angela Breslin. This competition fosters a love of reading for teens as well as an opportunity to be a part of something exciting as well as educational. The Connetquot Public Library offers teens numerous
opportunities to take part in library programming. From the inception of a Teen Advisory Board to hands on craft and cooking programs, SAT Prep Courses and Pre-Licensing Courses, the library is committed to help educate and enlighten teens. The library also offers teen a chance to earn community service credits by decorating the library, making crafts for the residents at a local adult home, cards for hospitalized children and veterans. Students may also use their love of reading to earn community service by writing a review of a teen book from our diverse teen collection. The library’s website offers links to “Homework Help,” “Live Study Help” and
“Teen Scene,” just to name a few. From writing a research paper to choosing and paying for college these links can be a guide for the ever-changing transition from teen to adult. We encourage teens to make the library an integral part of their academic and social lives. As the library celebrates the milestone of its 40th Anniversary, we strive to celebrate teens and their achievements. We move into the next 40 years with growth, challenge and excitement for all that is to come. National Award Fire Island’s Woodhull Elementary School has been honored with a SupportMusic Merit Award by the NAMM Foundation’s “Best Communities for Music Education” program. This is the second time the school has earned this

The shifts are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, the competition included a critical thinking component in which three judges asked a series of questions based on scenarios that business owners are likely to encounter. The students were required to work together to provide solutions and prevention plans. Finally, the students were pressed to defend costing and food portion
questions presented by two additional judges. These competitors worked extremely hard on their business plan and the payoff was well worth it. The girls received thousands of dollars in scholarship money to several different colleges and universities. The students also toured the campus of nearby Marist College and visited the famous Eveready Diner, featured on Food Network’s Diners, DriveIns and Dives.
