Meadow Croft – Uncovering And Reclaiming History We Know The Land That Time Forgot. Welcome To The Land That Time Remembered! w w w. s u f f o l k c o u n t y n y. gov/Departments/Parks/ Historic-Sites/MeadowCroft The faithful stewards of the property, who’ve guided restoration and upkeep over the years, are the Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association. BBPHA and its 300+ members was founded in 1983 to care for Meadow Croft. BBPHA President Mary Bailey recruited high school students from the Sayville High School History Club (Advisor: Susan Hart) as well as the SHS varsity softball (Coach: Tiffany Rowan) and football (Coach: Reade Sands) teams for the weekend effort. The plan is to restore the farm equipment for public display. Meadow Croft is the charm jewel of Brown’s River on the Sayville/ Bayport border. Few rivers have a crown jewel let alone one so grand! The Hamptons before the Hamptons, the Sayville/ Bayport area was a resorter’s dream, home to three golf courses, a 600seat opera house, beach clubs and grand hotels. Into this splendor is Meadow Croft. Legend has it that John Ellis Roosevelt built the Island’s very first built-in pool on the plush estate (where it still sits today). BBPHA Treasurer John Amato captained the effort along with the petite but truly mighty BBPHA officer

Jen Tabat-Economos. BBPHA officers Sandra Iden and Leanne Maher Berg were also on hand (as they often are) to rally the troops! The Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association are paragons of hospitality. They regularly team with other organizations and invited all willing volunteers to join this effort. BBPHA also hosts tours on Saturday and Sundays between 2-4pm from June through October. The monthly membership meetings are held from 2-4pm on

the forth Sunday of the Month, September through June, at the Bayport-Blue Point Library. They host guest speakers. And they

Fire Island Commences Search For New Superintendent The Fire Island School District Board of Education has commenced a search for the district’s next superintendent of schools, as current superintendent Loretta Ferraro has announced her intention to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. “Over the past 13 years,

Mrs. Ferraro has led our district with class and distinction, bringing about many important changes to our school community,” said Board of Education President Jay Lippert. “From her start as a classroom teacher to her rise as our district’s leader, Mrs. Ferraro’s tenure

in Fire Island has been unmatched. We thank her for her dedication and service to the district and the students of Woodhull School.” The district has partnered with Eastern Suffolk BOCES to assist the board of education with the superintendent’s

search. It is anticipated that a new superintendent will be named in the coming months and be prepared to begin working in the district at the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Updates regarding the search will be provided to the community as they become finalized.

By James Bertsch On April 3rd, the Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association (BBPHA) welcomed teams of high school students to the land that time remembered. That’s when Sayville High School students and BBPHA leaders and members teamed up to recover antique farm equipment on the Meadow Croft Estate. They also removed invasive vines from the towering trees on the grounds. Such work protects the structures (the mansion, carriage house and garage) from tree damage, as trees can’t handle the weight of vines in storms. John Ellis Roosevelt, Teddy’s favorite cousin, started construction on Meadow Croft in 1897 under skilled architect of Sayville, I.H. Greene. Back then, mansions like this colonial revival had names. Thanks to the genius of a World War II veteran and longtime volunteer fireman, Barney Loughlin, the home was saved from a planned fire training. Local Legislator and NYS Congressman Paul Harenberg and Peter Fox Cohalan stepped up to secure grants to restore this beautiful mansion to its all its splendor. Behind Meadow Croft is Loughlin Vineyards, a family business still run by Barney’s family. Meadow Croft is also a Suffolk County Park. https://

Academy Street Elementary School Dedicates New Playground

During the dedication ceremony, Max C. led the Pledge of Allegiance, while teacher Mr. S. Mirandi played the national anthem. Principal Kerry Vann thanked the assemblyman, who was present during the ceremony, for his generosity. She also explained that the building of the new playground served as a STEM activity for the students, who watched the initial mapping and staking, the building of the structure, and lastly, its inspection. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Connetquot High School seniors Stephanie Chen and Ethan Zhang on having achieved a score of 1,500 or better on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The highest score a student can achieve is 1,600. Both students were recently presented with a

congratulatory plaque by Principal Michael Moran and Director of Guidance Jessica Yawney-Kohler. Both Stephanie and Ethan explained that the secret to their success on the exam was preparation. Both students used the Khan Academy to practice prior to the test. Stephanie, who acquired

a score of 1,510, is planning on attending MIT this fall where she will pursue a major in computer science and possibly a future career in artificial intelligence. Ethan earned a score of 1,500 and would like to pursue biology. He has not yet committed to a college or university.

A Letter From Project9Line Dear supporters, The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities specifically pertaining to the respiratory & auditory body systems as well as mental disorders. The “savings” from these proposed changes are projected at 100 Billion dollars over the next 10 years. That equals $100,000 directly from 1 Million Veterans pockets. The main conditions affected are Sleep Apnea, Tinnitus, and PTSD. We only have 1 week left to stop them. Please alert your network around the country to tell their local congressman that we do not want these changes made. Also, please tell your media contacts the same. Together we can stop them but we must Act now. The VA claims that they will not reduce any current Ratings but it is the VA’s regular practice to periodically reassess disabled veterans who have not sought an increase. If a reassessment occurs, it may be done under the new guidelines and the risk of reduction is most definitely present. This new rating schedule may effect every veteran past, present, and future. The reason for the proposed sleep apnea changes is because many veterans who were exposed to burn pits and/or agent orange (both are dioxin) have developed the condition sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is extremely debilitating and can be fatal. Currently, if a veteran is diagnosed with sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine they are entitled to 50% service connection. Sleep apnea symptoms include; excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), depression, anxiety, headaches, sexual disfunction, hight blood pressure, increased accidents, cardiac issues, loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), of inability to concentrate, irritability, snoring, restlessness while sleeping, waking up suddenly after gasping or choking, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or crankiness, constant need to go pee at night, night sweats as well as it can lead to a stroke. The VA is proposing to eliminate

the 50% threshold verbiage that currently states “the veteran requires the use of a breathing assistance device, such as a CPAP machine” which entitles the veteran to 50% service connection. By removing this verbiage they will effectively eliminate any future applicants from getting the 50% rating for sleep apnea. The VA states “the basis for assignment of evaluation at all of these proposed levels will be the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea, not simply the method of treatment.” Also, the VA claims the “purpose of these changes is to update medical terminology, incorporate medical advances that have occurred since the last review, and provide well- defined criteria in accordance with actual clinical practice.” This is not so, It’s all about the money as shown through the VA projected savings in the VA economic impact study released on January 27, 2022. From said VA economic impact study - “VALUE: VA has determined that there are costs and transfer savings associated with this rulemaking. The total transfers savings is $15 billion from FY 2022-2026 and $57.1 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” Most of that savings (40 Billion) is from the proposed sleep apnea ratings changes and Tinnitus removal (15 Billion). The reason for the tinnitus changes is because almost everyone that has served has developed tinnitus. Tinnitus is the most commonly service connected condition. Over 90% of Veteran applicants are granted service connection for tinnitus (over 2 million veterans are service connected for tinnitus) and are paid about $150 per month at the current rate. The VA is proposing to eliminate the 10% rating for tinnitus and combine the symptoms of tinnitus with hearing loss and rate it under hearing loss. The issue is that the threshold for service connection for hearing loss is much more difficulty to achieve. The result of this change will make it extremely difficult for veterans to be compensated for tinnitus and the constant ringing in the ears. Also, in a separate simultaneous proposal, the VA is proposing to change the Rating Schedule for

mental health conditions. After review it seems that these changes may be beneficial to veterans but we should all be wary of assuming any benefit from these changes just yet. The definition and interpretation of the new verbiage has yet to be played out. With an estimated savings of 45 Billion over the next 10 years, it appears that the veterans with mental health conditions could be paying the price. Estimated savings based on the VA economic impact study of the proposed changes to the mental health verbiage within the ratings schedule. “Estimated impact: VA has

determined that there are costs and transfers associated with this rule making. The total budgetary impact is $18.3 billion from FT 2022-2026 and $45 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” We can not let them make these changes. Please take the time to alert your fellow Americans, fellow veterans, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the 29th annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont Lake State Park will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 12:00pm-2:00pm. There is no rain date for this event. The egg hunts will take place on the open field and will begin at 12:15pm. Additional hunts will occur at 15-minute intervals with the last one at 1:45pm. The hunts will be divided into three age categories: ages 4 & under; ages 5 & 6 and ages 7-9. There is a 3-egg limit per child per hunt to ensure everyone goes home with a special treat. Please bring a small bag or basket for your child to put

their eggs in. In addition to the egg hunt, there will be food vendors and free children’s activities including a petting zoo, pony rides, educational display by the Environmental Department, funny photos, and an inﬂatable bounce (weather permitting). You can also visit and take pictures with the Spring Bunny. This event is cosponsored by radio stations WBAB (102.3FM) and WBLI (106.1FM), Royal Events, NY Life, College Hunks, Ghost Busters, Long Island Suffolk Center for Speech, Catholic Health, and the Natural Heritage Trust. Outdoor 1.5-Mile Stations Of The Cross Walking Service Returns To Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

The Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s Virtual Stations of the Cross can be viewed by visiting YouTube at the following link: Virtual Stations of the Cross Video. Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station: Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format Stations of the Cross Prayers – Foldable Booklet Format Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily. “Due to restrictions relating to the pandemic over the past two years, we offered a virtual Stations of the Cross for those wishing to follow in the footsteps of Jesus during his journey to Calvary. It is necessary to offer families the opportunity to connect with our Lord’s sacrifice which leads to his triumph over death and the promise of eternal life. Our

in-person Stations of the Cross services – both guided with our deacons and selfdirected – are back for 2022 as we expect large numbers of faithful to attend,” said Richard Bie, President/CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury. About Kindness.” As part of the contest, the students worked together to brainstorm, create a rough copy, revise and illustrate a book to publish focused on kindness. Each student created an individual page of the book where they shared ways to spread kindness through big or small acts.

Cherokee Street Collects Socks For Ukraine And Local Organizations

What started as a Writers Workshop unit turned into a sock fundraiser for Cherokee Street Elementary School students in Karyn Goncalves’ and Melissa Comis’ third grade class. The students collected 2,149 pair of new socks to give to the East Islip Ambulance Company, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless and the citizens of Ukraine. During the Writers Workshop lesson, the students listened to a

speech written by United Nations delegate Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a Canadian environmental activist who urges others to act with the future in mind. The students modeled speeches after CullisSuzuki, persuading the school community to donate socks. During their research, the class had learned that the homeless are particularly in need warm socks. To broaden their campaign, the students made posters for their

cause and placed bins around the school. They initially collected 1,149 pair of socks and then received a 1,000-sock donation from apparel company Bombas. Ms. Goncalves said the students were excited that their cause received such traction in the community. “Even though this cause is now finished, our ideas for giving back to the community are not over,” she said.

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse. Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth grade students in the Connetquot Central School District received a lesson on internet safety from Suffolk County Police Officer Justin Fernandez as part of the districtwide Dignity for All Students Week. Throughout the week’s activities, students learned that by showing respect and dignity for others daily, they can spread more love, kindness and gratitude and create

a more peaceful world without conﬂict. This initiative also transferred to how students behave online, making sure they act respectfully and keep themselves safe from predators. Officer Fernandez emphasized the importance of good decisions. He explained that applications like Snap Chat and Tik Tok are designed to be addicting and cautioned students to be careful not to expose themselves

to individuals looking to hack their information or prey on youngsters. He also emphasized the importance of keeping a clean and respectful digital footprint, since nothing on the internet can be truly deleted. Officer Fernandez encouraged the students to not overshare, make their pages private, be mindful of the information shared, don’t be eager to post and keep followers low.
