New Partnership Family and Children’s Association (FCA) and The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) – two of Long Island’s most prominent nonprofits - have entered into a strategic partnership that will consolidate administrative functions, reduce operating expenses and most importantly, create a

seamless continuum of care for individuals and families struggling with addiction. Under the new arrangement, LICADD has become an affiliate of FCA. school-based prevention programs, to mental health/substance abuse screenings, to brief interventions and NYSlicensed outpatient treatment, to recovery support and relapse prevention. Additional services offered by the agencies include: youth mentoring, services for military veterans, children’s mental health services, transitional housing and professional continuing education programs. “Ultimately, this collaboration will allow both agencies to reach and assist more people. That is the only reason these two agencies exist; service provision and support for Long Islanders. We at LICADD are excited about this great partnership,” said LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. Under the formal

agreement, LICADD will retain its identity, its 501c3 nonprofit status and existing programs for the foreseeable future, and FCA will help the agency manage staff, finances, existing grants and new opportunities in the rapidly evolving behavioral health marketplace. “The two agencies have a long history of collaboration and mutual respect. It seemed like a natural progression to begin a formal partnership if we can assist more people in need,” said LICADD Board Chair, Jeff Capazzi. FCA Board Chair Drew Crowley agrees: “This creative arrangement strengthens both organizations and ultimately benefits families on Long Island who need better access to high quality addiction services.”

cultural understanding. At the middle school, he spoke about ancient civilizations, such as China, India and Egypt. Since the students are studying these regions, the artifacts on display allowed them to further explore the country’s cultures firsthand.

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Recognized as a “dedicated teacher, coach, and mentor for students in Sayville School district for over 24 years,” Jennifer Wittman-Cahill was recently honored by the Brookhaven Town Office of Women’s Services (Sports Category) at their 30th Annual Awards Ceremony. An active educator as a physical education teacher, Ms. Wittman-Cahill also coached High School Girls Varsity Basketball, Varsity and Junior Varsity Softball, Varsity Cross Country as

well as Middle School Girls Cross Country and Boys Track. Throughout her Sayville career, she has coached for three Long Island Championships, six Suffolk County Championships, and been named Suffolk County Coach of the Year. For such distinguished service, both Sayville High School Principal Ron Hoffer and Sayville Athletic Director Dennis Maloney nominated the Sayville teacher and Brookhaven resident for this award. “Jennifer has been called a master teacher and a role model for all,” said Beverly Jefferson, a member of the Brookhaven Women’s Services Advisory Board who made the introductions. “She’s able to listen, advise, and help many students with personal issues. Jennifer has made a positive impact on Sayville’s athletic

programs and physical education department as a major reason the program has been so very successful. She is a great role model for current and future Sayville High School athletes. Not only does Jennifer teach and coach, she is also a Key Club and Leadership Advisor. She is truly a role model for all.” The awards ceremony included an acceptance speech (read the entire speech attached ) in which Ms. Wittman-Cahill expressed her gratitude to all her students and young athletes “ for the everlasting impact they have had on my life” as well as acknowledged the “unyielding guidance, support and love from my family.” Congratulations, Jennifer Wittman-Cahill, for earning this illustrious award with a lifetime of tremendous service.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 3rd and 4th grade students recently had the opportunity to experience new cultures with international visitors. Students in the 4th grade were visited by a curator from the Maritime Museum of West Sayville, who provided educational projects for the students to work on, including making a working lighthouse’ made of a tiny battery, index card and metal fibers

to celebrate Long Island history. Students in the 3rd grade were visited by Australian native Mr. Chris Pitkin. Mr. Pitkin entertained students with stories, photos and artifacts from Australia to immerse students in his culture. Students learned about the country, animals, plants and aboriginal citizens. Students also had the opportunity to observe traditional boomerangs and didgeridoos, the world’s oldest wood

instruments. The visit concluded with students learning about the language of native Australians. Following the visit from international guests, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden held a Principal’s Challenge where Edward J. Bosti students and their parents created items using only cardboard and tape. The creations were put on display in the school for the whole community to see.

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. The magazine itself is beautiful, and can be read online by all at: www.seasonsmagazineonline.

com, or purchased for the highly reasonable yearly rate of $24.95. Being, well, not of the Human sort, I can’t say I find the extensive listings of Long Island happenings of much use. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

Connetquot Central School District’s Superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. Adams recently welcomed the Connetquot Senior Citizen Council and its affiliated senior clubs to the dressrehearsal performance of the district’s 2016 spring musical, “High School Musical.”

The Connetquot Senior Citizen Council is an organization comprised of dedicated volunteers who provide increased opportunities for Connetquot students to learn and grow. Sponsored by the Connetquot High School Musical Theatre Club, district senior citizens were invited

to enjoy “High School Musical” followed by dinner and dessert at the school’s cafeteria. This was the 13th consecutive senior citizen “Dinner and a Show” event, organized by Director of Pupil Personnel Ms. Gail E. Santo.

SHOWING APPRECIATION - Islip Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently attended a “Protect the Protectors” event at the headquarters of the Sayville Community Ambulance Company. This initiative, hosted by State Farm Insurance, was established to demonstrate the community’s appreciation for the work of our local first responders. As part of this effort, State Farm donated Canary Home Security Devices that will be installed in the homes of many local police, fire and EMS personnel.

PINS PRESENTED - Legislator Bill Lindsay attended the Community Ambulance Company’s Installation Dinner on Saturday April 2nd to present commemorative veteran pins to those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The pins which will be worn on uniforms is to signify that this person is not only a tremendous asset to our local community but a hero for serving our Country.

She spoke about the 5-beat storytelling framework (The Setup, The Rising Action, The Climax, The Falling Action, The Resolution or Transformation) that would pace the action and ideas to keep audiences interested. After, she invited students in the class to consider giving it a try. The success of these classroom experiments actually inspired two Sayville students from Mr. Ed Schmieder’s fall semester classes to make the experience real by participating in an actual (mostly) TRUE THINGS show this winter. The brave volunteers were Sayville High School Freshman Loriann Capra and Junior Allison Pelletier. Each student first worked independently on her

individual story before seeking assistance from Ms. Martha Kahan, Student Assistance Counselor at the High School, and Ms. Treder-Wolff for final preparations before the show. It was exciting to see them perform. “Both students created stories that featured experiences about family,” Ms. Kahan said proudly, “and although each was emotional, the girls were able to use humor as well as vivid imagery to tell their stories. The audience was riveted and fully supported the girls through the process. Their poise and confidence on stage as well as ability to weave a compelling narrative was inspiring.” Loriann and Allison were so energized by their experiences, they wholeheartedly endorsed the activity and encouraged the spring semester students in Mr. Doug Shaw’s classes to go for it. “We have at least one student planning to tell a story in the future,” Ms. Kahan announced, “and Ally Pelletier is going to tell another on May 21st in Port Jeff.”

LITERARY FLASH MOB - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students and staff recently participated in a flash mob to celebrate literacy. 90 YEARS YOUNG - Gloria Marchese, a Town of Islip resident for 23 years and a fixture at the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Holbrook, recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Gloria remains active by supporting local church initiatives and events as well as spending time with her daughter, Rosemarie. Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron was on-hand to celebrate, along with members of her family and her friends from the community.

Sayville High School Creative Writing classes in both the fall and spring semesters enjoyed a visit from a very creative guest, Jude Treder-Wolff. Host and creator of (mostly) TRUE THINGS,* a monthly storytelling show located in Port Jefferson, Ms. Treder-Wolff introduced the Sayville students to the idea of writing for a performance venue. She explained that she chose to pattern her showcase after The Moth, the famous international organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Like The Moth, “the kind of stories we work on at (mostly) TRUE THINGS are much more raw and personal which makes them real, human, and relatable.” To clear up the frequent misconceptions about what the storytellers are sharing in this kind of performance art, Ms. Treder-Wolff emphasized that there are “distinctions between telling true stories about one’s own life and experiences - turning real life into art - and what most people think of as storytelling: folk tales and legends. High Honor Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Jason Giunta is being awarded the Principal’s Leadership Award from the Suffolk County High School Principals Association. Jason, who was nominated for this honor by high school principal Dr. Gaurav Passi, is considered a standout leader both at the school and within the community. This year, he

volunteered to represent the student body on the Board of Education and is a student representative on the district’s technology committee. The dedicated leader is also a highly committed student, who has pushed himself with a challenging course load and was named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor by the College Board earlier this

year. He is also a member of the school’s track and cross-country teams. Jason will be attending Binghamton University this fall. History Comes Alive Woodhull Elementary School students in Gabrielle Donovan’s Intermediate class recently hosted and interviewed Bartley Horton, a 78 yearold lifetime resident of Fire Island. The activity was part of an ongoing oral history project, which annually pairs Woodhull sixthgraders with longtime Fire Island residents in order to bring the history of the

island to life. During the course of the interview, students learned that Mr. Horton attended the Fire Island School when it was a oneroom schoolhouse and was taught by Richard Woodhull, son of Fire Island School District founder Mina Woodhull. He was born shortly before the Great Hurricane of 1938, which wrought similar

devastation to Fire Island as Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and during which his mother sheltered him and his brothers in bushes on the bay side of the island. The student-elder project is a tradition at Woodhull, began and maintained by Deborah Gerken, and will hosts its annual presentation at the Fire Island Lighthouse on May 7th.
