while going to high school and college, and then later on while working a full time job, I tended to miss quite a number of regular rehearsals leading up to the big recital at the end of the year. Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

As part of the Fire Island School District’s ongoing commitment to character education, Woodhull Elementary School students recently worked with performer and teaching artist Lyle Cogen. He conducted interactive

workshops focused on standing up for oneself and others when confronted with social pressures and bullying. In classrooms, the students spoke candidly among their peers about their experiences and

thoughts on the treatment of others. In the exploration of the topic, they created short plays and role-play performances to practice positive social skills and responses in a variety of situations.

STEM-Based Learning a recent visit to the Science Museum of Long Island in Plandome. Using LEGO Dacta Technic Kits and assisted by a museum instructor, students built their own simple machines and joined

them together to produce a complex machine. In the process, they observed the workings of the machines, collected data and predicted how they would operate together.

Night of Accomplishments The March 28th Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting highlighted multiple students throughout the district for both their academic and athletic capabilities. To begin the night’s recognitions, Sycamore Ave. Elementary School fifth-grader Julia Zachmann and fourthgrader Carson Turissini were awarded with tokens of appreciation for being declared school champions of the Town of Islip’s annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored by Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the sharpshooter challenge encourages children in local schools to improve their basketball skills while serving as a reminder to “Just Say No to Drugs”. Idle Hour Elementary School fifth-grader Andrew Mullane was recognized by the board of education for receiving the “Early Act Award” from the Rotary Club of Sayville. This award was presented to Andrew in honor of him being a student with a creative mind and strong leadership skills, which benefit both his school and community.

The Connetquot High School Boys Varsity Wrestling team was recognized for their accomplishments this winter season, as they finished with an impressive final record of 13 wins and three losses, and advanced to the “Final Four” in the Suffolk Dual Meet Championship Tournament. Additionally, freshman Steven Wilkinson, along with seniors Danny Colondona, Paul North and Jeffrey Brown, were named AllCounty wrestlers based on their athletic talents. The Connetquot High School Girls Varsity Track and Field team was also commended for their record-breaking season, both on the individual and team levels. By the end of the 2016-2017 season, the team had been named League 2 Champions, runners-up of Suffolk County Large Schools and ranked third on Long Island by Newsday. Boys Varsity Track and Field athlete Christian Forletto was recognized by the board of education for his impressive times set on the field this season. Due to their sportsmanship and overall performance in the water, the Connetquot High

School Boys Swimming team was awarded with the Outstanding Sportsmanship honors from Section XI Athletics. Additionally, freshman Grady Olsen, Cyle Andrade and Cole Andrade, along with sophomore Dylan Macejko and juniors Joe Amarando, Mike Agrillo, Frank Messina and Tommy Loos, all qualified for the Suffolk County Meet. Ninth-grader Grady Olsen qualified for the NYS Qualifier based on his times. The Connetquot High School Varsity Cheerleaders had an extraordinary season, taking home highranking titles at every competition attended this season. Amongst their most impressive accomplishments on their long list this season, the cheerleaders competed at UCA High School Nationals on February 11th-12th in Orlando, Florida, advancing through the semifinal round and hitting their best two performances of the season while there. On February 25th, the cheerleaders competed in the Suffolk County Championships in the Large Varsity Division for the first time in school history and placed second.

Employee Excellence

Suffolk County Legislators presented the legislature’s Employee Excellence Award to three employees from the Bureau of Chest Diseases at the Suffolk County Department of Health Services for their outstanding work during the March 28th, meeting in Hauppauge. Lourdes Diaz, RN, of Holbrook, Jean Gordon, RN, of Lindenhurst, and Patricia Bergmann, RN, of Sound Beach, were nominated for this recognition program, which is sponsored by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, by James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, Commissioner, Department of Health Services. The award is intended to commend county employees who excel in handling their duties. The Bureau of Chest Disease staff maintains an active surveillance

program for tuberculosis. In his letter of recommendation, Dr. Tomarken says, “Working effectively as a team, these three employees go above and beyond their job requirements, taking care of community residents with compassion, understanding, and cultural sensitivity.” He added, “Their professionalism and dedication protects the public from this serious communicable disease.” The nurses travel throughout the County making home visits to residents, accompanying tuberculosis patients to doctor visits, traveling to hospitals to reassure patients and make sure they receive the best possible care. They frequently perform these duties outside of normal business hours. “Our County employees deserve our appreciation

and recognition,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Nursing is a truly inspiring, thoroughly rewarding, and noble profession. RNs Bergmann, Diaz and Gordon are very deserving of the Suffolk County Employee Excellence Award.” RN Bergman has been an employee for 31 years, RN Diaz for 23 years and RN Gordon for 21 years with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The nurses always provide service with a smile, said Tomarken, are consistently dependable, punctual, and hard-working employees. “These three individuals have an excellent rapport with the NYSDOH Bureau of Tuberculosis Control. Their collective knowledge of tuberculosis and its treatment ensure that they provide high quality care to those they serve.”

A Worthy Cause In an effort to assist those battling cancer, members of the Bayport-Blue Point High School Interact Club recently raised more than $1,100 for the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society through their Pennies for Patients campaign. Throughout the month of March, members of the club distributed collection

boxes in all homerooms and kept tally of the donations. Thomas Wulff’s homeroom class was announced to have contributed more than $300 alone.

The Bayport-Blue Point School District is proud to announce that senior Julia Caruso was selected to exhibit her artwork, titled “Undressed,” at this year’s Long Island’s Best: Young Artists Exhibit at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, the premiere art exhibit for

studies at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia this fall. Additionally, the work of Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Matt Califano, Lena Diaz and Mikayla Martinez were also submitted for the show. Their artwork can be seen on the museum’s website and in a video displayed at the museum during the exhibit. PARP The annual “Pick A Reading Partner” program is in full swing at Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District, with students reading at home nightly with parents, relatives and siblings, and participating in celebrations of reading at school. This year’s theme “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” draws from the celebrated work of Dr. Seuss. The PTA-organized

event kicked off in March with a schoolwide breakfast. During the event, students received a goodie bag including pencils, reading stickers and bookmarks. As part of the program, students and staff will have the chance to participate in a number of reading themed activities, including T-shirt Tuesdays (readable T-shirts), lunchtime karaoke, “PARPcorn”

snacks, and a book fair held in the children’s section of Barnes and Noble in Bay Shore. PARP is locally organized by the Woodhull PTA and is part of a statewide PTA campaign of the same name to promote reading. Woodhull received an award from the state PTA in 2012 for the quality of its PARP involvement and programming. Students from Idle Hour and Sycamore Avenue elementary schools in the Connetquot Central School District were recently selected to compete against their peers from across Suffolk County in the upcoming Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair based on their dedicated scientific research skills and original school fair projects. Kindergarten- through first-grade winners were selected based on projects that displayed robust research, a thoughtprovoking hypothesis

and conclusive results. Over 100 Suffolk County schools take part in the Brookhaven National Lab’s Science Fair, with close to 500 students competing against one another annually. Representing Idle Hour Elementary School at the Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair are kindergartner Matthew O’Hagan, first-grade student Jacob Brussey, second-grade student Korey Davis, third-grade student Erin Meehan, fourth-grade student Justin Sommer and fifthgrade student Shane

McGuinness. Representing Sycamore Avenue Elementary School are kindergartener Alexander Gregory, firstgrade student Harrison Ruppert, secondgrade student Timothy Dickinson, third-grade student Peter Barcelo, fourth-grade student Lauren Homayoon and fifth-grader Alysa Feldman. The winners of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair competition are awarded a medal and commemorative banner to display at their respective school.

Students Excel at DECA The March 21st BayportBlue Point Board of Education meeting was full of celebration as the district honored several students for their accomplishments, both individually and collectively. Members of the BayportBlue Point High School Distributive Education Club of America recently travelled to the New York State DECA Competition held in Rochester and emerged victorious with

multiple awards to bring back to their high school. The following seven students medaled in their respective category: Abby Auwaerter, first place in New York State in Innovation Plan and Design; Philip Tubiolo and Kelsie Dougherty, first place in Role Play, Top 10 in Testing and sixth overall in NYS for Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making; Joe Salaway, top 10

position in the Principles of Business Management Test; Shannon Conrad and Kevin Polanish, top 10 position in the Business Law and Ethics Role Play; and Hannah Duffield, top 10 position in the Travel and Tourism Test. SPRING CLEANING - On Sunday, March 26th, dozens of volunteers gathered at Patchogue’s historical Lakeview Cemetery to do some early spring cleaning. The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes club was recently visited by retired professional athletes Tim Bassett and Billy Taylor who shared their experiences and instructional tips during a training session that club

members can use when mentoring the district’s fifth-graders. Bassett is a former professional basketball player with the championship ABA NY and NJ Nets. Taylor was a running back for the New York Giants.

For nearly 20 years, AHA has positively impacted the Connetquot community by inspiring high school students to be leaders through sport while also working as role models to fifth-grade students.
