Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely

chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where

we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.

This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! The district recently hosted their biannual English as a New Language Family Night at Edith L. Slocum Elementary School on March 5, inviting ENL students and families throughout the district for a night full of fun, dancing, cultural appreciation and a bit of magic. Members of the Connetquot High School Civic Club were on hand to volunteer throughout the course of the night, as they joined the younger students in arts and crafts, dancing and friendly conversation, along with the setup of the evening’s activities. After a welcoming address from Director of ENL/World Languages Denise Hannaoui, Connetquot Public Library librarian Christine Moltzen spoke to the attending families about all of the wonderful programs that the library has to offer,

including the multitude of free ENL classes. Additionally, Mike Maione, aka “The Silly Magician,” provided some fun and educational entertainment

to the students, along with their family members who joined them later in the presentation. The attendees were also able to enjoy a number of

delicious foods throughout the course of the evening, consisting of elements of different cultures.

Five members of the Sachem Central School District community were honored for their dedication and commitment to education at the Scope Education Services 18th annual Awards Dinner on March 18. Laura Slattery, president of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, received the School Board Service award. Ms. Slattery has been a resident of the district for over 40 years and has served as a member of the board since 2015. Her commitment to the Sachem Central School District gleams through her continued work advocating for all students, staff and community members within the district. Paula Attard-Lowis was honored with the Support Staff Services award. Ms. Attard-Lowis is a Sachem graduate who has worked as a clerk in the personnel office. Her 41 years of experience serve

as an invaluable resource when she assists in tasks imperative to the success of the district. Sue Tuttle, director of student services, received the Administrator Service award. Ms. Tuttle has served the Sachem Central School District for 30 years and held positions as a teacher assistant, special education teacher, assistant coordinator and director of student services. Ms. Tuttle currently oversees a large department which is dedicated to serving Sachem students with special needs as well as their families. Sheryl Amallobieta, a fourth-grade teacher at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School, was honored with the Teacher Service award. Ms. Amallobieta has worked in the district for 18 years. She held various roles, including a technology integration specialist, before becoming a classroom teacher. Her student-centered classroom prepares

students for the 21st century through her implementation of projectbased learning that creates a diverse instructional experience and empowers all students. Emily Frosina, Sachem High School North special education teacher, received the Community Service award. During her years of commitment to the students of Sachem, Ms. Frosnia has been involved with the Polar Plunge and has raised large amounts of money as the team captain for several years. Additionally, Ms. Frosnia is also involved with Island Harvest and has plans to refurbish the courtyard at High School North to include a real working garden with areas for meditation and reflection. “This night was a great opportunity for us to honor people in Sachem who continue to make a difference,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham. “It was a great celebration.”

Stop-Motion Movies During an innovative art activity at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, fourth-grade students were recently introduced to stop-motion animation with the help of art teacher Susan Kinsey and technology integration specialist Keri Haas.

Students began the activity by storyboarding the scene that they were going to record and then presenting their ideas to their classmates for feedback. Utilizing the Google Slides program on laptop computers, student groups worked together to carefully move each piece

within the scene while taking photos periodically to create the animation. Over three art classes, students used problemsolving skills to develop new techniques that created smoother animations to achieve their desired results.

As part of the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge, students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District have been learning heart-healthy habits and implementing them

through exercise. Before school, students recently attended a oneday program where they engaged in heart-healthy exercises and games that elevated students’ heart rates and taught them about the importance of

exercise. As part of the initiative, during gym classes students will continue to learn more about the importance of exercise and how to take care of their heart.
