he American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make a difference in the lives of patients this spring by giving blood. Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand. Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals. Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells in a single appointment and are accepted at

select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year. Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, ﬂippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta ﬂakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little ﬂoating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

On October 2nd, 2014, Suffolk County launched the bullying awareness website, which can be found at www. suffolkstopbullying.org. Legislator Sarah Anker invites Suffolk County students ages 13-18 to participate in a music video contest, in an effort to help address the concerns of bullying. “According to 2010 Bullying Statistics, 160,000 children miss school each day for fear of being bullied,” said Legislator Anker, County Chairwoman of Education and Information Technology Committee. “Having been a victim of bullying myself, I understand how important it is to speak up.” By working with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County’s Information Technology Department, Department of Health, Youth Bureau

and the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Anker initiated the creation of a bullying awareness website. The website includes comprehensive bullying awareness resources and information for students, parents, and faculty. As of 2012, New York State requires all public school districts to designate a school staff member as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC) to protect students from harassment, discrimination and bullying. This website includes a list of each school district’s DAC, which is provided as a resource for students who may encounter bullying. Entry submissions are due on May 1st, 2015. The music video clip must communicate the issue of bullying and illustrate ways that their peers can address this serious issue. We are looking for a short

video clip posted through a YouTube account to be no more than 3 minutes in length. The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived therefrom and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylona and Islip. This year, the 65th Annual Scholarship Benefit will be presented on Sunday, April 26th. The performers for the concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a

list of almost 200 other winners from the past 64 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards. This year’s winners are: Third Place - Anthony Vetere, Sayville High School, on piano Second Place - Liam Harrison, Sayville High School, on trombone First Place - Sebastian Gallego, Brentwood High School, on clarinet After the concert, there will be time to meet and greet the performers and

share in fellowship and light refreshments. The concert will be held at the United Methodist Church of Islip, 350 Main Street, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for students, and may be purchased at the door. This is the final meeting of the year. Regular schedule and concerts will resume in September of 2015. Meetings are the last Monday of the month at the United Methodist Church, at 1 p.m.

All Stars

With the 2015 St. Joseph’s Church Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball season coming to an end, the annual AllStar game was held on Friday, March 27th. Held at the Ronkonkoma Middle School in Ronkonkoma, 20 youngsters were selected for the two age-group AllStar teams. Two sets of youngsters selected to play in these AllStar games representing the 3rd-4th grades and 5th-6th grades. The teams played a 10 game season, and included at least one practice date per week. Regular season games were played at Connetquot’s Duffield and Cherokee Street Elementary Schools. On Friday, March 27th, the youngsters were excited to receive their official All-Star shirts before the game, and to get ready to play in front of so

many fans! Mom’s, dads, siblings, friends and plenty of grandparents filled the stands for the contest and cheered for their favorite teams. While winning is always an important reason to play basketball, the friendships and camaraderie the boys enjoyed this season could be seen in these All-Star games. Coaches Paul Rom (blue) and Keith Gilliam (gold) were pleased with their players’ efforts, and thoroughly enjoyed the intensity and friendships between the youngsters on both teams. The game began with player introductions, and pledge of allegiance. It ended with all the players and coaches shaking hands with the new friends they made this season. The coaches, parents and players would all like

Samantha Cascardo is the 2015 PTA Scholarship winner. Kathy Vento, Suffolk Region PTA Director presented the award to Samantha at the 18th Annual PTA Dinner held at Eastern Suffolk BOCES on March 18th. Samantha is a Sayville UFSD student enrolled in the Certified Personal Training (CPT) Program

at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center. Samantha credits her experience at the Academy for improving her confidence. She said, “I learned communication skills, experience in dealing with clients, and knowledge about human anatomy and physiology, as well as biomechanics and kinesiology.” Samantha shared that her experiences in the CPT Program have taught her the necessary skills for her future and prepared her for her future career goals. At Sayville High School is an active member of the Sayville field hockey team leading her team to both All Conference and

All County titles. Outside of school, Samantha is on a dance competition team and participates on the Sayville Dance Team which she founded and is a choreographer. As an athlete and in academics, Samantha has excelled. She has taken a full load of honors and AP level courses and is a National Honor Society member with a GPA of 97. She also has been involved in music as part of the Sayville band and the Tri-M Music Honors Society. After graduating, Samantha plans on attending Hobart and William Smith College in upstate New York where she plans on studying exercise science/kinesiology while playing field hockey.

PERFECT PEN PALS - Connetquot Central School District High School ninth grade students recently visited Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to meet their first grade student pen pals. The high school students had been writing letters to the elementary school students to encourage a love of reading and writing. During the visit, the first graders illustrated stories and wrote notes as their ninth grade pen pals motivated them to express themselves in different ways.

DANCING CLASSROOMS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 4th grade students recently showcased their newly acquired ballroom dancing skills during the first ever “Dancing Classroom” program. The program was held for students, teachers, family and friends at the Oakdale Bohemia Middle School. Students had been learning and practicing their moves during their Physical Education classes for a month in preparation. They demonstrated their talents in dances like Merengue, Fox Trot, Rumba, Swing, Tango and the Viennese Waltz.

Enumerating all the reasons why these hardworking Third-graders at Cherry Avenue were “Oscar worthy,” Mrs. Batterberry, along with “Academy” Assistants Mrs. Andria Flynn and Mrs. Karen Donnelly who were both accessorized in splendid feathered boas, congratulated the students whose successful efforts undoubtedly made them all winners. New this year were LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS for two very special people, CSE/CPSE Chairperson and School Psychologist Cara Donaldson, who has been an exceptional child advocate for students

districtwide, and Elementary School teacher Claudia Carpenter who started her career twenty-five years ago at Cherry Avenue, both retiring this June. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. John Stimmel was invited back to Cherry to introduce the two winners and announce their awards.

Third grader brought tears to Mrs. Batterberry’s eyes; Catherine Batterberry won the award for Best Daughter. The emotional moment was offset by a humorous acceptance speech prepared by Mrs. Batterberry. Catherine, who was so inspired by her Oscar, read her speech aloud: “I think I’ll clean my room, make my bed, and wash the dishes.” The audience of students and parents roared with laughter. “Maybe I won’t do all these things,” she continued, “but I still love you.”—words every mother wants to hear! At last, the stars of the show (all the Cherry Avenue Third Grade students) were called up for their specific awards and took center stage to express their “shock, surprise, and gratitude” in acceptance speeches that thanked family, classmates, and teachers. It all seemed great fun, but the actual purpose of the Cherry Avenue Oscars was to promote public speaking and help the students develop a sense of self-esteem, thereby fulfilling the New York State Standards for public speaking. Currently a Second Grade Teacher at Sunrise Drive, The annual Cherry Avenue Oscar Awards Ceremony gave Mrs. Carpenter’s grandson Dylan Walsh is a First-grade all the students a wonderful opportunity to dazzle the student at Cherry and made a guest appearance to award audience with their acceptance speeches and to shine in his “mamar” her trophy, along with some warm hugs. the spotlight of parental pride.
