The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and support research to fight heart problems. Students raised money by pledging to participate in Jump Rope for Heart.

555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition. The event featured 2D and 3D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island high schools. The district’s students created

their featured pieces in the building’s Advanced Placement Studio Art class, taught by Tina Nadeem. They were each honored during an artists’ reception and awards presentation this March.

Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti students, staff, parents and teachers recently came together to fight heart disease by participating in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart initiative. Jump Rope for Heart is an American Heart Association program which encourages healthier living, free of

cardiovascular disease and stroke. The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and support research to fight heart problems. With the help of parents and the school’s ParentTeacher Association, students in grades K-5 jumped rope and raised

more than $6,700 by asking family and friends to donate to the American Heart Association for the fight against heart disease. The Jump Rope for Heart event was coordinated by Edward J. Bosti physical education teachers Ms. Tara West and Mr. Michael Oldis.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATION - Robert McNamee of Ronkonkoma, recently earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank on March 8th. Robert has earned 23 merit badges and chose to renovate the entrance way of the Town of Islip Senior Center at Ronkonkoma Beach by removing an unsafe and uneven slate “patio,” adding mulch, and planting bushes and a tree. His Court of Honor Ceremony will be held on April 22nd at the Ronkonkoma Middle School where family, friends, scouts and elected officials will be in attendance.

Legislators Bill Lindsay and Monica Martinez teamed up with State Farm and Canary to distribute 500 Canary Home Security Devices to volunteer firefighters as well as EMS workers to thank the first responders for their efforts in keeping our communities safe. Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently took part in the Town of Islip’s Just Say No Sharpshooter competition. The competition gave players one minute to make as many baskets as they could from several positions on the court. The purpose of the event was to promote fitness and agility as well as leading a healthy lifestyle. Winners from the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School include 4th graders Julia Villani and Dylan Maresco and 5th graders Reagan Quillo and Justin Hammond. This year’s competition was sponsored by the Town of Islip Housing Authority, Southside Hospital, Northwell Health, and the Islip Elks Club.

Taking Home Medals Bayport-Blue Point High School’s DECA chapter performed extremely well during this year’s New York State DECA Career Development Conference held in Rochester. During the event, three Bayport-Blue Point

students earned “Top 10” honors in the contest’s test portion. This section required competitors to answer 100 questions in their respective area of study within an hour timeframe. The district

congratulates 10th-grader Ciara Joseph for her success in the subject of apparel and accessories marketing as well as seniors Matteo Bracco and Paul Dreyer for their team placement in the area of business law and ethics.

A Best Community For the third time in a row, the Bayport-Blue Point School District has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, the honor was given to 476 school districts nationwide this year in recognition of the “outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who work together to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school’s curriculum.” The Bayport-Blue Point

School District currently offers instrumental instruction in the areas of orchestra and band to students in fourththrough 12th-grade. Vocal instruction is offered to students in third- through 12th-grade. In addition to these performance groups, students are able to advance their knowledge of the discipline of music by enrolling in extracurricular performing groups, advanced music electives as well as showcasing their skills during the All-District ensembles and the high school’s award-winning musical production.

Elementary classroom music instruction is provided in kindergarten through fifth-grade and general music instruction is provided in sixththrough eighth-grade. Next year the department will open a new music technology/keyboard lab at the high school. “This honor is directly related to the support for Music Education that is received from the BBP Community, the Board of Education and the district’s administration,” said Paul Weber, chairperson for art and music. “We should all be very proud of this honor.”

Prestigious Honor Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District has received the 2016 SupportMusic Merit Award. This is the third time in four years that the school has received the award from the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation, which has recognized high quality school music programs since 1999. Altogether, 118 individual schools from across the country were honored this year. The award reflects

the many factors that contribute to a healthy school music program, including staffing, funding, instructional time, program offerings and community support. The NAMM Foundation, with the assistance of the University of Kansas, evaluates schools on these factors through their participation in a survey, with results verified by school district administration. Fire Island students participate in music instruction one to three

times per week with music teacher Philip Tamberino, who has taught at Woodhull since 2006. The music program includes classroom ukulele, keyboard lab and bucket drumming, as well as more traditional elements of concert band, vocal music and musical theater. Fire Island regularly sends students to the NYSSMA solo festival and SCMEA All-County performing ensembles. The school was the recipient of the NYSSMA Award of Excellence in 2010.

STORY PIRATES - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School students recently enjoyed a visit from teachers and parents dressed as story-telling pirates as part of the school’s “Parents as Reading Partners” initiative. This year’s theme was “Pirates Discovering the Timeless Treasure of Reading.” The “pirates” visited individual classes in the weeks leading up to the assembly to teach students tools they need for reading and writing. During the assembly, the students were surprised to discover Captain Hook was actually their principal, Mr. Pollak.

FIGHTING HEART DISEASE - Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School students, staff, parents and teachers recently came together to fight heart disease by participating in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart initiative. The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and support research to fight heart problems. MURAL COMPLETED - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) students recently completed a five-foot tall mural of 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Art students spent the past six months working on the mural as a gift for social studies teacher Rob Burger, featuring his favorite president, Teddy Roosevelt, in the style of his favorite artist, Chuck Close. In order to complete the project, students worked on the mural before school and during lunch periods, all on their own time.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) student John Demott was recently selected as “Artist of the Week” by online global art museum and digital curating institution Artsonia. Connetquot students were inspired by quadriplegic painter and photographer Chuck Close as part of a class project featuring artists with disabilities. Demott painted a portrait of Close for his project and submitted it to Artsonia. After being chosen as Artist of the Week, John was rewarded with a plaque and a $50 gift certificate to purchase art supplies.
