Celebrating Dedication Four members of the Fire Island School District learning community were recently honored by SCOPE Education Services for their dedication to help make Fire Island the vibrant district that it is. During the organization’s 16th annual School District Awards Dinner, veteran teacher Karen McNulty received the Teacher Service Award, veteran paraprofessional Dawn Lippert received the Support Service Award, veteran Woodhull PTA

member and past president Tara Heslin received the Community Service Award, and current Fire Island Board of Education vice president Vernon Henriksen and veteran board member received the Board Service Award. The award recipients’ combined service to the Fire Island School District exceeds 80 years, with all four recipients working concurrently for over 14 years, but more importantly the effect of their service on the

lives of students has been immeasurable. SCOPE Education Services is a Board of Regents chartered organization that has provided services to Long Island schools since 1964. The SCOPE awards dinner is an annual event honoring members of school districts across Long Island who have been selected by their respective superintendents for recognition.

Photo courtesy of: Connetquot Central School District Making a statement about pollution with her dress design, Sayville Sophomore Ava Herrera sewed the gown that won her recognition and an award at the annual Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best Show. For this year’s prestigious show, the Heckscher Museum had received 387 works of art from fifty-four Long Island High Schools. The competition was fierce, but the Museum adjudicators chose eighty-four for their exhibition and each of these pieces had to be worthy of the nomenclature “Long Island’s Best.” “The show had incredible work this year,” Sayville Art Department Chairperson Debbie Urso said. “For Ava to receive an award was a huge testament to her amazing talent and teachers. She created the piece for the show in Jen Berotti’s Advanced Drawing and Painting

class.” The idea for Ava’s design began with her class field trip earlier in the year to the Heckscher Museum. While there, Ava “saw a work that inspired her,” teacher Jen Berotti explained, “and sketched it.” This class trip and the follow-up assignment led to her creating the awardwinning dress design showcased at the Long Island’s Best Show. Ava explained her concept for the work: In Phillip Gladkov’s #6, I was inspired by his use of form and use of raw garbage to depict a striking message about the extinction of different species and deterioration of the natural world. I have designed a dress that is my interpretation of his piece coming to life as Mother Nature. She is a strong, beautiful woman who lives in modern times. However these modern times have brought pain

and suffering to her. She is being suffocated by the black oil around neck and dripping down her dress. The pollution is also represented by the garbage that collects at her feet. The garbage attached to her dress she has been resilient enough to survive, but not for long. These horrors that she faces are all around us, even at Halesite Park, on the Huntington Harbor where I hand selected the pieces of garbage I wanted to include in my dress. By displaying my dress in Huntington, I hope to raise awareness for the prevention of pollution in our everyday environments. “Then, to make her selection for the exhibit - plus the Joseph Mack Achievementaward - even more meaningful for her,” Jen Berotti summed it up, “she got to meet the artist of her inspiration piece, Philip Gladkov!” Congratulations, Ava!

Celebrating 50 Years Even though the building’s cornerstone reads 1967, when the newest elementary school in Sayville finally opened its doors, it was March of 1968. A major construction setback due to immense storms that swept across Long Island had delayed Lincoln Avenue’s official opening that had been originally scheduled for September of 1967. However, nearly fifty years later, nothing delayed the opening of Lincoln Avenue’s doors for the anniversary celebration. Student-designed artwork festooned the corridors to commemorate the march of time with photos, old news, and mementos from the early days of Lincoln up until the present. Five decades were on display thanks to the efforts of the students and teachers from Kindergarten and First

Grade (2000s and 2010s), the Second Grade (1990s), Third Grade (1980s) Fourth Grade (1970s), and Fifth Grade (1960s). There was much to celebrate as Principal Michele LeBlanc noted in her words of welcome during an evening reception that was wellattended by alumni and their families, former faculty and staff, former PTA presidents, the members of the student government as well as the performing Fifthgraders. Special mention was given to the retiring Sayville Superintendent Dr. Walt Schartner for his dedication to the students, and the Lincoln Avenue community renamed their beautiful school courtyard in his honor. The Connetquot Central School District is proud to announce that Idle Hour Elementary School fifthgrader Andrew Mullane received the “Early Act Award” from the Rotary Club of Sayville. This award was presented to Andrew in honor of him being a student with a creative mind and strong leadership skills, which benefit both his school and community. Andrew participates in many extracurricular activities, including serving as a peer mediator,

participating in a crossage collaboration with first-grade students as a classroom buddy, and contributing his time and ideas to the school’s student government meetings. Additionally, Andrew was selected for All-District Chorus and Band based on his musical talents. He was the only band member at Idle Hour selected for the Suffolk County Music Festival. “Andrew is an excellent problem-solver, leader and overall positive role model

to all of the students at Idle Hour Elementary,” said Lara McNally, the school’s youth and family services coordinator. “He participates in all of the community service projects in the building, including food drives, collections for the animal shelter and collections of toiletry items for local families in need. Distinguished Teacher

James Lecci of Sayville High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2017” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like James Lecci offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few

decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” James Lecci will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 30th, along with 11 other teachers from across Long Island. Following the award ceremony, Annette Gordon-Reed, Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School and a Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, will give a lecture. She won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family (W.W. Norton,

2009) and most recently published (with Peter S. Onuf) “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination (Liveright Publishing, 2016). James Lecci, who teaches AP US History and Sociology at Sayville High School, has taught for 21 years, 19 of which have been at Sayville. As a true example of the effect that a teacher can have, Mr. Lecci says that “I was profoundly impacted by one of my high school teachers and that led me to want to enter the field of education.” He earned both his Bachelors in History and Masters in education from Stony Brook University. Mr. Lecci’s contributions to the students of Sayville extend past the classroom. He estimates that he has written 400+ college recommendations during his time at Sayville. Also, he has coached football and baseball in the first part of his career. Outside of school, Mr. Lecci’s interests include theology, Disney World and reptilian pets. He has studied Greek and Hebrew and has completed 50+ graduate credits at the Divinity School at Regent University. Because his wife is a Disney fanatic, he

At this year’s annual Model United Nations conference, Sayville Sophomore Eric Stenzel earned an Honorable Mention for his insightful discussion. He was among the six Sayville High School students participating with student delegates from other Long Island schools in the three-day event hosted at Hofstra University. Learning about the African Union’s vision to create “an

integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena,” the Hofstra Model UN Conference delegates “debated and attempted to resolve issues relating to instability and problems of governance in the Federal Republic of Somalia, a long standing-problem that also affects surrounding countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia. This was the second year for Eric and for other members Karl Stein, Harrison Bench, Sohum Sheth, and Chris Pitre. This was the first year for Freshman Charles Burgardt. We are proud of all their efforts.”

Without his support and never ending faith in me, I would not be the young woman I am today.” “Mr. Lecci was one of the few individuals early on who helped me realize that I could excel at a place like Harvard,” Miss Panigrahi reflected. “He motivated me to always keep my head up, to work hard, and to learn even if I felt discouraged, stressed, and/ or disappointed by myself or others. “He also reminded me that although I should always be open to new ideas and opinions,” his former student concluded, “ I should never sacrifice my personal core values even if they differ from others’ - an idea that has been instrumental to my personal growth at Harvard.”

Ronald Hoffer, Principal of Sayville High School, echoed this emphasis on personal growth, saying, “Mr. Lecci is a dynamic and inspirational educator. Perhaps the most telling attribute of Mr. Lecci is his appreciation of teaching the most important lessons - those which aren’t directly related to social studies curricula; they are ‘life lessons’ and his students are the benefactors.” “Mr. Lecci is a master teacher,” says Robert Hoss, the Social Studies department chairperson at Sayville. “He has gone above and beyond the stressful demands of student scores and directs his energy towards enjoying his daily student interactions. I have witnessed on a continual basis an educator utilizing sound pedagogy and bringing a rich curriculum all the while maintaining an outstanding rapport with his students.” The Sayville School District has had two previous winners. Melissa Dreyer, chemistry teacher, was recognized in 2016. In 2011, Kathy Bernstein, who taught math, was also honored with a scholarship to visit Harvard. At the ceremony on April 30th, the Harvard

Club of Long Island will also announce the Distinguished Teacher of 2017 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s 12 Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach economics, English, history, math, physics, and science research. The winners teach in the Baldwin, Elmont, Farmingdale, Herricks, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Mt Sinai, Sayville, Sewanhaka, Smithtown, and Syosset school districts.

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Dancing Classrooms Fourth-grade students at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently showcased their newly acquired ballroom dancing skills during the school’s fourth annual “Dancing Classrooms” performance.

Students spent two physical education classes per week learning such popular ballroom dances as the merengue, fox trot, rumba, swing, tango and Viennese waltz before showcasing their skills before proud family and friends at Oakdale-

Bohemia Middle School. Dancing Classrooms is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994, with a mission to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem in children through the practice of social dance.

Building for the Future Members of the Connetquot High School Habitat for Humanity Club, along with Habitat for Humanity Club coadvisers Jason Wilans and Dennis Fagan, district administrators and high school staff, recently traveled to Mastic to continue their efforts to build homes for the

less fortunate in Suffolk County. In addition to working on the construction site and helping to build the house, Connetquot has continued to be the leader among the region’s student chapters in raising funds in support of the Suffolk Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. At the Mastic

build, Mr. Wilans and Mr. Fagan presented two checks totaling more than $6,000 for the charity. In the 17 years since the formation of Connetquot’s Habitat for Humanity Club, it has donated over $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County.
