Bringing Learning to Life An exciting addition to a unit on ecosystems and food chains was incorporated during a recent activity at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District in Lisa Mazzaglia’s fourth-grade class, with help from technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa. As part of the students’ study on ecosystems and
the elements they are composed of, students utilized iPads and the Google Expedition Augmented Reality program to see the food chain come alive. Looking through the iPad, students were able to point the devices at certain markers on the floor that created digitized models of components found in the food chain, such as
producers, consumers, omnivores, herbivores, carnivores and scavengers. Among the animals that came to life through the digital software were bears, deer and vultures. As a culminating activity, students organized a food chain from start to finish using each of the components they studied BRINGING LEARNING TO LIFE - Merrimac Elementary School fourth-graders throughout the unit. used the Google Expedition Augmented Reality program to see the food chain come alive. Mythology and Technology Sixth-grade students at Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently participated in a mythology-themed activity creating button pins, inspired by the Rick Riordan book, “The Lightning Thief.”
With help from the Sachem Public Library, students were taught how to assemble their own button pins before they pressed the buttons together using one of the library’s button presses. Students made buttons from one of six premade
designs before creating their own mythologythemed illustrations to be turned into buttons. The activity was an opportunity for the students to review key areas of the popular book as part of their unit on gods and goddesses.
Highlighting African-American History A collaborative effort provided impressive results as kindergarten students in Jennifer Collins’ class joined their fifth-grade book buddies in Amanda Hallstein’s class at Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District for a project that honored prominent AfricanAmerican men and women in history.
As part of the project celebrating Black History Month, student groups researched information on their selected individual and created timelines using chronological order to outline their lives. While organizing the presentations, fifthgrade students focused on text structure to clearly and concisely deliver the
information. Concluding the project, students presented their work to a room of their peers on the influential individual they selected. Among the prominent figures chosen were Fredrick Douglas, Barack Obama, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson and Harriet Tubman.

Your Thoughts Are Making You Stressed “Start by doing what’s necessary. Then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - St. Francis of Assisi Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly
spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have
and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love
This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.
Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.
Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.
Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.
What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs
Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers. Also, if you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of

Before midwinter recess, Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District transformed into a bustling hub for art and literature as several established authors and illustrators visited to share their specialties with students as part of the annual Sene-Con convention, now in its second year.
Throughout the day, seventh-grade students traveled around the building to a number of classrooms dedicated to specific presentations by talented authors and illustrators from multiple disciplines. Origami artists Shrikant Iyer and Jacqueline Billig taught students precise folding sequences to form origami
art creations, such as a swan, that the students practiced. Graphic designer and illustrator David O. Miller shared beginner tips for drawing in three dimensions. He continued his tutorial on the fundamentals of sketching by guiding students through several character drawings and emphasizing the students’
ability to create things with the technology available to them. An art workshop presented by Imagine That! introduced students to famous artist Jackson Pollack’s work where students learned about the artist before recreating his work using his unique drip paint style. Continuing the focus on art, Marvel artist Billy Tucci spoke to students about his approach to art and the hard work that lead to the position he holds today. Tucci displayed a collection of his work for students to see and answered numerous questions about his profession. Additionally, the Manga style of drawing prominent in Japan was represented by comic artist Misako Rocks! as she demonstrated the unique techniques associated with the medium. (NAPSI)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that there are more than 38 million drivers age 65 and older. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving
often represents freedom, independence and control. But transitioning from driving doesn’t mean you have to lose these things. Your health care providers or Area Agency on Aging (www.eldercare.gov) can point you toward a range of transportation alternatives in the community. The first step toward finding those tools is recognizing when you might need them. Signs that an Older Adult’s Driving Skills Need Testing So how do you know whether you or an older adult you know is developing difficulties as a driver? These issues can be warning signs that suggest
that an older driver may need to be tested or evaluated: • Getting lost in familiar areas • Ignoring traffic signs and signals • Becoming easily agitated or angered • Falling asleep or being unable to concentrate when driving • Reacting too slowly to dangerous situations • Forgetting or ignoring driving basics (like yielding to the right of way) • Having trouble judging distances. combination of art and storytelling, Christopher Agostino painted several students’ faces to coincide with folktales he told from around the world. His theatric renditions of numerous folktales captivated his audience, some ending with a surprising reveal of the face he painted on his chosen volunteer. This year, students also learned
tips and tricks from ventriloquist Jonathan Geffner as they practiced numerous techniques of the trade together. Another unique addition to this year’s convention was African fabric painting with Mrs. Cole-Lacey, in which students utilized paint and several pattern stamps to design and create a unique piece of art on a section of cloth.

Connetquot Honors Dr. Seuss On March 5, staff and students from Helen B. Duffield Elementary School welcomed Connetquot High School students to celebrate the life and works of Dr. Seuss as part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America program. Ninety-five high school students, along with their English teachers Carolyn Paul and Megan Faeger, visited with Duffield students to read from Dr. Seuss’ books. Additionally, Connetquot School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dean Mittleman and Board of Education President Milynn Augulis were on hand to enjoy the day’s activities. “Our students planned and prepared for almost two weeks for this visit,” said Mrs. Paul. “We used a PowerPoint presentation of past visits to Duffield to get them excited for this special day. We then broke the classes into smaller groups who visited the individual classes depending upon the grade level. The students prepared lesson plans, and created writing and art projects developing thoughtful questions about the books they would read to their new friends. They also
incorporated the theme of “7 Healthy Habits” that are used at Duffield all year long.” One group of high school students created a “Cat in the Hat” photo booth, while another brought along helium balloons to display their friends’ writing for the book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” for the fifthgraders. “The experience has proven, year after year, to be extremely rewarding,” said Mrs. Paul. “Students have often written their college essays about their Duffield experiences, and some have even altered their future plans and decided to enter the field of education as a result of this experience.” Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell thanked the students, their teachers and guests for visiting and having so much fun with the students of Duffield Elementary. Although passing away in 1991, Theodor Seuss Geisel’s 114th birthday was celebrated on March 2. His first book was published in 1937, and some of his best-known classics are “Green Eggs and Ham,” along with “The Cat in the Hat.” The NEA launched the Read Across America program in 1998 to promote the importance of reading to school children.
