Urine Damage Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate elsewhere, limiting the damage it causes. When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch. Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot. Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage. Insect Damage

Browsing The Archives By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

The success of their efforts undoubtedly made them all “Oscar-worthy” for which the ceremony would recognize each Sayville student with specific awards. “Academy” Assistants, Mrs. Andria Flynn and Mrs. Karen Donnelly, accessorized in splendid feathered boas, distributed the statuettes to each winner called to the stage. Starting with administrative awards for Assistant Superintendent (and former Cherry Principal) Dr. John Stimmel, Cherry Avenue Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne, and Musical Director Kristi Woerner, the presentation continued with the naming of categories and the student winners. Standing center stage, the actors and actresses

expressed their “shock, surprise, and gratitude” in their acceptance speeches that thanked family, friends and teachers. It all seemed great fun, but the actual purpose of the Cherry Avenue Oscars was to promote public speaking and help the students develop a sense of self-esteem, thereby fulfilling the New York State Standards for public speaking. By the conclusion of the ceremony, Hostess of Ceremonies had delivered enough corny jokes that had everyone groaning with laughter, and each radiant star wore a pleased look while clutching a shining statue. At that moment, it was not too difficult to imagine the voice of Sally Field in the background: “You like me, you really like me!”

SHOWCASE OF THE ARTS - Over 1,000 members of the Connetquot community recently visited Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School to view the artworks of some of the district’s most talented students during the Annual Showcase Of The Arts Festival. Some of the artworks on display included, pottery, paintings, and sculptures. The entire high school was decorated with various forms of artworks that were viewed by friends, family members, Connetquot residents, and members of the Connetquot Board of Education. The event was designed to show the continued support of an arts and musical education.

Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of fertilizer and watering the lawn immediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road. Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.

Counting Down To “Ivy Day” Decisions

For months, I have been anxiously awaiting March 27th. This Thursday, known as “Ivy Day,” has historically been when top tier colleges release their admissions decisions. As I am writing this, I am hours away from Ivy Day. Serving as the culmination of years of hard work, the final word from these prestigious institutions has been long awaited. If even one of the colleges that I have applied to admits me, I will have succeeded in my goal. An acceptance would serve as positive affirmation that my hard work has not gone unnoticed. However, in the likely event that I am

inundated with rejections, I know that everything will work out the way that it is meant to. I am a firm believer in God’s plan. After months of thinking, I have finally justified the idea that I do not need an Ivy League education to be successful. Not everyone who attends a great school is happy in life. Education is just an ingredient in the recipe for success. Hard work and motivation also play major roles. If everything works out the way I hope, I will be accepted. With that being said, a rejection is not condemnation. At this point, I know that I will end up where I need to

be. Everything is out of my hands, and I can only hope that the admissions officers have chosen to admit me. My father once instilled in me a great mantra. He preached the idea that, “If you can handle it, don’t worry about it; and if you can’t handle it, don’t worry about it.” I know that there is nothing I can do this late in the game to sway a decision. There is no sense in fretting. I can only hope. As I count down the minutes until Ivy Day, I will try not to think about the impending, life altering decision. Next week, I hope to share good news with you all!

tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers. • Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic

side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly. Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

Seventh and eighth grade students from Connetquot Central School District Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) recently learned and performed entertaining dance routines such as, foxtrot, merengue, rumba, tango, salsa, swing and waltz for their friends and families during the Dancing Classrooms event.

OBMS students completed the school’s pilot program of the internationally acclaimed social development, and artist-in-residence program titled Dancing Classrooms: Transforming Lives One Step At A Time. The students learned the intricate dance moves during physical education classes and

also wrote essays to describe their learning experience throughout the process. The program was introduced as part of a general school curriculum aimed at inspiring students to participate in physical activities, while also developing an appreciation for performing and cultural arts.

Talking Common Core

Upon the Senator’s request, high school and middle school students who were willing and able to speak about Common Core from their perspectives were invited to share a dialogue with Senator Boyle in a Student Focus Group. During the Focus Group meeting held at SCCC, Brentwood campus, Senator Boyle listened to the students’ points of view as they shared how the implementation of the Common Core was affecting them and their educational programs Sayville sent three students to participate in the Focus Group. Two High

School students, Dalen Ferreira and Nicole Farese, and one Middle School, student Philip Rinaldi, chose to participate, letting their voices join students from other districts. Senator Boyle’s Communication Director, Christine Geed, sent a letter to the school principals thanking the students for agreeing to participate in the Focus Group. “The students engaged in very honest, forthright conversation, and we appreciate their candor. Trust that the Senator will be taking their thoughts and comments to the floor of the Legislature to share

with his colleagues as the specifics of the Common Core Learning Standards are discussed and debated.” Ms. Geed also added, “We hope that you will allow the students of the Sayville School District to participate again in the future on issues that directly impact them. Connetquot Public Library Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III recently nominated Bayport resident, Chestene Coverdale, as the Senior Citizen of the Year for the 8th legislative district. The Suffolk County Senior Citizen of the Year Award is given to a person who has enhanced the lives of older residents in Suffolk County through advocacy, leadership, volunteerism, and acting as a role model to all generations. “Chestene is extremely deserving of this prestigious honor,” said Lindsay III. “She is constantly looking for ways to help her neighbors and improve the lives of all Suffolk County residents.” In addition to being an educator, philanthropist, wife, mother, and grandmother, Chestene currently serves as the

Executive Director of the Greater Sayville Food Pantry, where she has been hosting career workshops, providing counseling, and distributing clothing and food to people in need. Chestene also sits on the Board of Directors for Splashes of Hope, is an active member of the Sayville Rotary and is an educational supervisor of students and teachers at Dowling College. “Chestene’s an outstanding advocate for all people in Suffolk County,” said Lindsay III. “From her work with the Sayville Rotary to all of her generous efforts at the Greater Sayville Food Pantry, Chestene has shown time and time again that service above self is not only a Rotarian motto, but her way of life. I cannot thank her enough for all

that she has accomplished for our community.” The Greater Sayville Food Pantry serves over 150 people per month in the communities of Oakdale, Sayville, West Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point and Bohemia. Adult Education cosmetology students from Ward Technical Center provided community service at an event held at the St. Ursula Center in Blue Point titled Women’s Spa Night. The event for Long Island women benefitted the center; a home for retired nuns. The evening was about relaxation, refreshments, and beauty. Services included facials, massages, reflexology, Thai Chi, yoga, and nutrition lessons by professional practitioners, and manicures and paraffin hand treatments provided by the students. Ninety

women paid $50 each to attend. It’s through fundraisers like this, raffle baskets, and craft fairs, that the center remains financially stable. Asked why she was attending, Rosanne Sihler of Northport replied, “To support the sisters - they do wonderful work - and to spend time with my mom and sister, who are also here tonight.” A second spa evening is planned for May 16th and the students plan to be there. Eastern Suffolk BOCES Teacher Dorothea LoBiondo said this is the school’s second year of participation. She added

that it’s a good experience for the students, especially in the area of customer service, and they will receive community service credit. The New York State licensed cosmetology course prepares students for the state cosmetology exam and job possibilities that include working as a beauty supply sales manager/sales clerk, manufacturing representative, retail consultant, and working in cosmetic department stores.
