Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking
for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been
pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! Chicken With Matzo Dumplings - This delicious recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” can be enjoyed during Passover or throughout the year. 1 2 1 4 12

Note: You can use goodquality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended. For the dumplings: 7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth. Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21⁄2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth. Make the dumplings by
mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary. Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots. To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point. Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes. If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used. Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting. In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup.

Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven or eight day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays. Passover celebrations begin on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan. That day typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. One of the symbols of Passover is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made from flour and water. Though matzo is an enduring symbol of Passover, that does not mean it cannot be enjoyed at other times of the year. In fact, those who want to celebrate their Jewish heritage or even those who simply want to experience Jewish culture can enjoy matzo throughout the year. It’s even possible to get a little creative with matzo. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” from Michael van Straten’s “The Healthy Jewish Cookbook” (Frog, Ltd.). This delicious recipe can be a part of your Passover celebration or just a meal to sit down and enjoy with family and friends.

They presented on the state of Scouting in all of New York - youth members served, community hours given, and projects completed for community organizations. In addition, youth heard from leaders about the importance of of community service and how being actively involved will serve them throughout their lives. Youth had a chance to meet and greet and take photos with various leaders. Explained Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), “I did not speak to the assembly, but the people that did get the opportunity to speak spoke about the opportunities that Scouting has provided them, such as camping and developing citizenship in a way that many of their peers had never been able
High Technology and Strong Faith Working Together
The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any
device, anywhere they can access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.
As the schools and students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important. Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s representatives participated at the annual New York State of the State in Albany on February 24, 2020. The youth members and their adult volunteer leaders of the Scouts BSA Troops participated in this event and were given a tour of the NYS Capitol. The scouts presented the legislature with an update on how well scouting is serving the Suffolk County community and each of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers had a chance to speak to the NYS representatives as they shared this information. The 19 youth members and their ten adult Scouting leaders (among others scouts from NY State) had a lunch in the Legislative Building and took a photo with Senator Martinez following a tour of the Capitol Building. The Scouts and Adult leaders listened to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, as well as Senator John Flanagan and Senator Monica Martinez speak about their support for the Scouting

Sachem Schools Celebrate Black History Month Throughout February, in celebration of Black History Month, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a collection of lessons on prominent African American art, music, poetry, and men and women in history. In elementary schools
around the district, students learned about Ruby Bridges, an elementary school student who at 6 years old was one of the first African Americans to desegregate a public school. Students learned about Bridges and then discussed the similarities they shared with each
other. Additionally, students read Scholastic news articles on historical African American icons such as Mary McLeod Bethune, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson and Harriet Tubman. At the secondary level, students reflected on the civil rights movement
and the nonviolent acts of Martin Luther King Jr. through civil disobedience. Students also watched the movie “Remember the Titans,” which tells the true story of the mandated integration of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, during the
civil rights era of the 1960s. Students needed to identify examples of discrimination before explaining how the community and individuals overcame them. As part of a study on the Roaring ’20s, students looked at the Harlem Renaissance and
how African Americans contributed to the culture of the United States through the rebirth of African American music, literature, poetry, art and dance, showcasing key members of the movement including Louis Armstrong, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Bessie Smith.

Debate Team’s Undebatable Success

Bayport Blue-Point High School’s debate club recently participated in their second Long Island Forensic Association competition at Ward Melville High School. With the possibility of making the state championships this coming April on the line, the four debaters burst out of their silos. Gabriel Ross joined returning debaters Milo Fallon, Dillon Duffy, and Jack Harrington as they debated the proposition that
“States ought to eliminate their nuclear arsenals” for the second time. Judging other competitors were the Debate Club advisers John Limperatos and Sean Meade, as well as parent volunteer David Fallon. The Bayport Blue-Point team allied themselves with the three debaters from the Sayville debate team in preparation and representation, rounding out their combined effort to take on schools such as Jericho, Cold Spring
Harbor, Great Neck South and Ward Melville. Each team will be sending representatives to the state championship at Hofstra University. Two Sayville Debaters will debate at the junior varsity level and Bayport BluePoint will be represented by Milo Fallon at the varsity level. Milo Fallon took second place overall at the varsity level at Ward Melville. The team’s debaters each won rounds for the day as well.
Celebrating Black History Through Music And Dance
The beat of African drums, the bylaphone and djembe resonated throughout the halls of Brookhaven Elementary School in the South Country Central School District as students celebrated Black History Month with members of African Horizons. During two performances with this colorful and vibrant musical group, Mama Yaa, Billy Bungo, Kofi Mahama, Kiinar Zahiratu and Richard Byrd shared
the traditions and daily life of West Africa through costumes, rhythm, dance, song and traditional storytelling. The cultural program was generously supported by the PTA and the South Country Education Foundation. Not only did the students learn African vocabulary and phrases through the troupe’s performances, they received the opportunity to express themselves through the dance moves and music.
African Horizon members also described each of the instruments and how they are constructed. Leader Mama Yaa studied dance and movement at the University of Ghana and currently teaches at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and Newark Community School of the Arts. She encouraged the students to study their ancestry and to share their culture with others.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has proved extremely challenging for many businesses, with the restaurant and lodging sector of the economy hit particularly hard, as the world works together to employ social distancing in an effort to “flatten the curve” and stop the spread of the virus. Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, temporarily closed on Tuesday, March 17th with plans to reopen on Monday, April 6th. Woodloch’s tagline, “together is the best place to be,” speaks volumes about the emphasis it places on bonding and connection with loved ones. Understanding this necessity to come together emotionally while being apart physically, the family resort was inspired to create its brand new program, Woodloch at Home, allowing guests the chance to join in a wide array of activities and games remotely through both the resort’s

Easter is a time of great celebration that is preceded by Lent, a weeklong period of reflection, prayer and
repentance. The days immediately prior to Easter are commonly referred to as Holy Week. This encompasses Palm Sunday and lasts through Holy Thursday (the day of The Last Supper), Good Friday (when Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb), and Holy Saturday (the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death and burial). On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices and oils. They found the tomb was empty and were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener and says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” In regard to his apostles Simon and Peter who were the first to see the risen Christ. Easter is a time of joy and celebration, and a great opportunity for Christians to immerse themselves in their faith.
