Bayport-Blue Point School District elementary students showcased their understanding of the scientific method through complex research projects on display at this year’s school science fairs. Prior to the event, the kindergarten through fifth-grade students selected a topic of interest to them and worked to prove a hypothesis. Projects submitted to this year’s fairs covered such topics as the physics of a roller coaster, probability of developing a nut allergy and even which gum kept mouths healthier. As a special component to the Science Quest fair held at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School, high school science students conducted hands-on demonstrations incorporating several science themes. In addition to showcasing their work during the school fairs, thirdthrough fifthgraders were invited to showcase their projects during the Celebration of Science event hosted by the BBP SEED Foundation. Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several

brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign

for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Matthew Richards of Bayport/Blue Point, was recently selected as Athlete of the Week for his achievements as part of the SUNY Oneonta men’s tennis team. Richards picked up a pair of wins, one at doubles and singles, in Oneonta’s 6-3 win at St. John Fisher. The senior teamed with Matteo Befi to pick up an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. However overwhelming a situation, to have the presence of mind to narrow one’s focus to the task at hand requires great strength. It is a truly admirable feat to be able to maintain such a mentality day in and day out, despite all those forces conspiring against us.

INDOOR RECESS - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School announced the introduction of a new “Indoor Recess” program. Students will be able to participate in activities to keep them active and busy indoors during the cold winter months. Both the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement for Children (CFAC) and the Edward J. Bosti PTA contributed to funding this program by donating 100 DAYS OF LEARNING - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s items such as modeling clay, board games, puzzles and a variety of physical education Sycamore Avenue Elementary School, Cherokee Street Elementary School and Edward equipment. J. Bosti Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of the school year with special activities. Students celebrated by dressing up as 100-year-old people and parading around school while older students cheered them on. Students also celebrated by creating Wacky Number Bond Monsters and colorful plastic cups.

Guide Dog Visitors Mr. Ryan McGuckin, Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator at Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, welcomed over a dozen beautiful dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, to the school on February 11th. Members of the Guide Dog Foundation had been invited by Mr. McGuckin to speak to the students, so they could learn about the special role these volunteers, and their canine friends play in our world. Mr. McGuckin explained

that these wonderful animals are trained by volunteers to work with people who are blind or visually impaired, free of charge. Rose, one of the volunteer handlers, explained that these dogs help promote independence, enhanced mobility and companionship to the visually impaired. The Guide Dog Foundation trains volunteer handlers from all over the U.S. and Canada to work with dogs that can then become so valuable to people in need.

The students were excited to pet their 4-legged visitors and to ask questions of their handlers. Mr. McGuckin, teachers, staff and students thanked the volunteer handlers, and their new four-legged friends, for visiting with them. McGuckin hopes that the children will come away with a deeper appreciation for dogs (and for animals in general) and learn how to be responsible citizens when it comes to the care and safety of our 4-legged friends.

As a culmination to their multi-week study on China, Academy Street Elementary School thirdgrade students celebrated their newfound knowledge during a Chinese New Year event. During the study, the

students learned about the Chinese culture and country through photographs and written words, including how red is the color of good luck and the capital region. During the celebration, the students fashioned

Carpenter and the Town Board are pleased to announce that the Islip Town Environmental Council (ITEC) will present the Charles Pulaski Memorial Environmental Award to a deserving high school student in grade, 9, 10, 11 or 12, who has displayed a genuine interest and concern in preserving the environment. This award, in memory of environmentalist and naturalist Charles Pulaski, will be presented at the May 5th Islip Town Board meeting that will be held at Connetquot State Park, at 2 p.m. Applications for the Charles Pulaski Memorial Environmental Awards are currently available at Islip Town high schools, or by contacting the following organizations: Great South Bay Audubon; Friends of Connetquot; Seatuck Environmental Association; Boy Scouts and

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr. welcomed over 500 parents, teachers, administrators, Board of Education Trustees and one district Superintendent to the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School on March 18th. In a community education forum co-sponsored by Connetquot Parents for Education, four influential education leaders shared information, and answered questions, about the current climate in New York State related to public school students and upcoming exams. Guest speakers included Dr. Joseph Rella, Superintendent of the Comsewogue School District; Jeanette Deutermann, Co-founder of NYS Allies for Public Education &LIOO; Beth Dimino, 8th grade science teacher and President of the Port Jefferson Station Teachers Association; Tony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association, and Daniel Carpenter, a 5th grade student from the Commack School District. Parents and teachers filled the Sycamore auditorium to capacity, carrying signs criticizing Governor Cuomo’s education policies, and his over-testing of their youngsters. Four such Education Forums have already been held on Long Island, which have attracted

thousands of parents and teachers eager to express their frustration, and dissatisfaction with the governor’s education plans. CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., in his comments about the history of these so called ‘education reform

movements’ said: “A child who goes to sleep at night hungry and cold, has no bed to sleep in, lives in a drug infested community, lives in an abusive household, or is surrounded by dysfunction, will not be able to learn in school. It doesn’t matter what these reform ideas are called - Common Core, Race to the Top, America 2000,

or Goals 2000. Children will not learn under those conditions, and to blame schools and teachers for that is just plain wrong.” Dr. Rella said that Common Core-related tests are designed so that a majority of children fail, leaving them discouraged. Beth Dimino has informed her administration that she will refuse to administer the exams. Jeanette Deutermann believes that the tests “… are not about children, but money, politics, union-busting, egos and corporate greed.” 5th grader Daniel Carpenter told the audience that he will refuse to take the upcoming exams because he wants to change the system to protect other students in the future, like his own brother and sister. Felicio went on to say, “If our politicians and bureaucrats in Albany and Washington were truly advocates for children, they would invest the money they’ve wasted on Common Core, and instead spend it on the root causes of poor school achievement.” Upcoming informational education forums will be held West Islip on March 30th, and April 1st at the Mt.
