Sachem High School East senior Ciara Torres recently had her painting, “Still-life in Tempera” accepted into the Juried Art Show at The Atelier at Flowerfield. Ciara’s painting was created in Ms. DelVallez’s Drawing and Painting 1 class. For the assignment, students were required to work from observation and develop forms using a limited pallet of premium tempera paint. Ciara paid attention to detail and often stayed after school to perfect her work. The art event provides art students with an opportunity to build their portfolio, as well as promotion and exposure of their works in The Atelier’s exhibition hall for a four-week period. The juried show also provides the winners with a scholarship to one free class and an Atelier oneyear membership.

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and signiﬁcant other support groups •Educational groups

Fire Island Commences Search For New Superintendent

The Fire Island School District Board of Education has commenced a search for the district’s next superintendent of schools, as current superintendent Loretta Ferraro has announced her intention to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. “Over the past 13 years, Mrs. Ferraro has led our district with class and bringing BARNYARD BUDDIES PROGRAM - The Pal-O-Mine Barnyard Buddies Program distinction, is a hands-on learning program for children ages 2-5 and involves the children’s about many important interaction with the Pal-O-Mine herd. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted and there is a 3.25% processing fee on credit card transactions. To learn more or enroll your child

As a member of this band, he will be marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City this November. REMARKABLE REPTILES - Libraries have something for everyone and wonderful ways of bringing us all together. Family programs present a collective experience encouraging learning, growth, and enjoyment. Despite the weather, many members joined us at Connetquot Public Library on Saturday, March 12 for a morning of family fun. Those who attended had the great pleasure of meeting “live animal ambassadors” up close. The Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) returned to the library once again, this time to introduce the remarkable reptiles found in nature. Among the live ambassadors were turtles, snakes, geckos, a blue-tongued skink, and an Argentine black and white tegu. Everyone had the opportunity to learn about the lives and habitats of their new friends and be inspired to connect with nature. It certainly was an extra special treat for our youngest members to touch and pet amazing reptiles. These unique interactions are an integral part of developing a positive relationship with nature and the environment. The library continues to offer many diverse programs for parents and children of all ages to come together and enjoy. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. Spring Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold the annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 2, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, The Fisherman Magazine, New York Life, Seaford Knights of Columbus Fishing Club, Art Flick Chapter Trout Unlimited, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Cathy Haas said. “The Spring Fishing Festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce family and friends to the sport with no license needed. Festival attendees can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and try their hand at fishing for trout while kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” “Fishing is a great way for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the environment,” said State Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman Jr. “I encourage anglers of all ages to discover what a great place Belmont Lake State Park is to try fishing.”

Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, casting instruction, rod use, fish identification, fishing instruction, fly-casting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. DEC and local fishing clubs will host informational displays and loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program. This event will be held rain or shine. The Spring Fishing Festival is designated as a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers ages 16 and older is suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid State freshwater fishing license to legally fish. All fishing regulations will continue to apply. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Pass holders. The 2022 Empire Pass can be purchased for $80 at State Park offices or online. The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking program in Nassau and

Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC will stock Belmont Lake with nearly 1,000 brown and brook trout. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. DEC will also stock Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, and Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 14 other Long Island lakes with trout before April 1, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing. In total, DEC’s spring stocking program, conducted by regional freshwater fisheries staff, staff from DEC’s Catskill Fish Hatchery, and volunteers, will place 20,000 brown trout and rainbow trout in ponds and streams in Nassau and Suffolk counties. A complete list of DEC fish stocking can be found on DEC’s website. Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is year-round for most lakes and streams. There is a daily limit of three fish per person. Spring trout stocking begins in midMarch and will be completed by early May. 11th Annual All Kids Fair Has Many Exciting Activity Areas Families across Long Island cannot wait for the All Kids Fair’s first in-person event since before Covid-19. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them. There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. In Suffolk County, we have three species of ticks to be careful of, namely: the Blacklegged Tick, the Lone Star Tick and the American Dog Tick. Black Legged Ticks The Black Legged Tick (deer tick) can spread Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Babesiosis. Lyme disease is by far the most common and can cause complications such as recurring swelling, painful joints, temporary facial paralysis and/or heart problems if left untreated.

A characteristic sign of Lyme disease is a red circular rash that may appear a few days to a month at the site of the bite. This occurs in approximately 60%-80% of cases. American Dog Tick The American Dog Tick typically transmits Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Tularemia. Support For Ukraine The Bellport High School Student Council, National Honor Society and the school’s life skills students have teamed up to provide support to Ukraine through a blue ribbon fundraising campaign and monthlong collection drive. The effort kicked off on March 18 with students and staff wearing the colors of the Ukrainian flag to show support for the war-torn country. On the same day, life skills students began selling blue ribbons that they had made for $1 each. All of the funds collected will be donated directly to the American Red Cross to provide humanitarian aid to those impacted by the conflict. Student Council and National Honor Society

members, meanwhile, are leading a communitywide collection drive for medical supplies, socks baby supplies (including diapers and wipes), nonperishable food and clothing. All items will be delivered at the end of the month to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead, which will ship the items directly to Ukraine. Community members wishing to help in the effort can drop off items to collection boxes located in the main entrance of the school. Monetary donations can also be delivered to the main entrance in an envelope labeled “Ukraine Relief, Attention: Ellen Hoffman.” Please also include your name and address.
