Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

PATCHOGUE PARADE - Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco marched in the Patchogue St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 19th. Thousands of residents came out to celebrate the annual parade. Calarco was joined by fellow elected officials Congressman Lee Zeldin, State Senator Tom Croci, County Executive Steve Bellone, County Comptroller John Kennedy, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Brookhaven Town Councilman Neil Foley and Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri.

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay teamed up with his colleagues at the State, Town and County government levels as well as business leaders all across Long Island for “Charting The Course”, an event aimed at building bridges between the business community and government, at Bayport – Blue Point High School this past wednesday. The event featured a round table format allowing for government and businesses to work together to solve problems while addressing the needs of the next generation - our students. Over the course of the two hour event the panel discussed starting a business, marketing and tourism in the region, the importance of organizations like Chambers of Commerce, networking, navigating governmental red tape, and the ever changing workforce that millennials are entering. Roughly 40 high school students were on hand to be a part of the dialogue. With a panel featuring small business owners, Chamber of Commerce presidents, elected officials and various other stakeholders, students had several questions that led to in depth conversation about job growth, the development of new and expanding fields and the importance of networking. The panel offered their best advice to students for success after they finish their education while providing real world examples from the business community. Charting the Course, first held by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory in June 2016, has continued to spread across Suffolk County’s legislative districts. Legislator Lindsay viewed the event as an opportunity to be proactive and continually show his steadfast commitment to local economic development. “As Chairman of the economic development committee it is imperative that I facilitate opportunities with the business community and continue to find ways for government and business to work together” said Legis. The cause is near and dear to Ms. Russo, whole close friends, Liz Cadmus and Nick Cadmus, have a daughter, Makenzie, who was born with the disease that causes painful blisters and skin erosions due to being born without skin on most of her limbs. In their efforts to raise awareness for this terrible

disease, the Cadmus family started the Rock the Socks Foundation as a way of sharing Makenzie’s story and raising money to help combat the effects of the disease. Since its inception, it has gathered the attention of not only thousands of individuals, but celebrities and professional athletes as well.

County Honorees Two county employees were rewarded for going above and beyond in their duties as part of a new recognition program sponsored by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Vincent Cordiale, systems analyst supervisor with the county’s information technology department, and Jennifer Kohn, a senior assistant county attorney, were honored with the firstever Employee Excellence

Awards at the Legislature’s March 7th General Meeting in Riverhead. Awards will be given out each General Meeting to acknowledge county employees for their hard work and contribution. “Many county employees work tremendously hard and are valuable assets to their departments, and the Employee Excellence Awards are a way for us to recognize their dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.

“Conscientious, honest and hard-working, Vincent Cordiale and Jennifer Kohn have excelled in their departments, making them perfect candidates for this award. I thank them for their contribution and service to Suffolk on behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County.” Vincent Cordiale, of Rocky Point in Suffolk’s Sixth District, was nominated by IT Commissioner Scott Mastellon. Cordiale has worked with the county

for the last 20 years and is responsible for the county’s technology infrastructure. A lead designer of the county’s redundant data centers, his commitment and dedication helped the county continue to operate during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Super Snowstorm Nemo, and he helped save $150,000 in county funding by obtaining a licensing rule exception. He has a stellar reputation for being the first employee to respond to issues in the evenings,

during the weekends, and even on holidays Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. She has represented the county in various fields

such as farm preservation, planning issues and Cornell Cooperative management, and she ushered through the sale of the remediated Circutron property. She has been instrumental in drafting new code and helped coordinate the county’s response to the detection of firesuppressing chemicals at Gabreski and in Yaphank, and to dumping at West Hills County Park.

As a part of Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s “Virtual Field Trip to Vietnam,” students throughout the building were able to experience a week of Vietnamese culture within their classrooms in honor of Speech Pathologist’s Laurie Katz’s and Christine Monahan’s visit to the country in support of the Smile Train Organization. The week’s activities incorporated the traditional Vietnamese sport Takraw into the student’s physical education classes, as they combined elements of volleyball, badminton and soccer into one and worked collaboratively to kick a small ball over the net in order to score points. Within their art classes, students were able to work on projects that reflected the culture of Vietnam. Younger students created beautiful lotus flowers, while the older students used their imaginations to make their very own Takraw jerseys.

Additionally, students were able to explore various aspects of Vietnam such as food, landmarks, school and others within their library classes. Prior to Mrs. Katz’s and Mrs. Monahan’s trip, the students took this information and created “Travel Tips” cards for the teachers based on what they had learned. In their music classes, students were introduced to Vietnamese instruments and learned how they are played. In addition, students watched video clips of “Vietnam’s Got Talent” and Vietnam’s version of “The Voice.” Sylvan Avenue Elementary School has supported the efforts of the Smile Train Organization for nine years now, and has raised over $25,000 in order to support children around the world who require cleft lip and palate surgeries. Throughout their weeklong visit to the country, Mrs. Katz and Mrs. Monahan were able to speak to the doctors who

Eventually, the original two teams of five students combined to become one coherent team of ten, and at the eleventh hour - the Friday night before the competition - their momentum was unstoppable. As they arrived at the Saturday competition, the students had come prepared with their diorama and 1,500-word essay, feeling great pride in their efforts and their vision. In preparing for this year’s event all the students in the competition were introduced to a simulation that

helped them learn “what a city needs currently to keep the residents happy and how that infrastructure is deployed,” Mr. Goodman explained. This meant that the students had to examine not only the construction of their city plan but also explore the social engineering of the services such as sanitation, hospitals, educational systems and facilities, as well as open spaces. Mrs. Lambiase recalled the challenge they faced at first. “How were we going to translate our team vision of using public space in an innovative way to build a three-dimensional model of our Future City?” She explained that “the team had to research technologies like carbon nanotubes, solar panels, vertical farming, and hydroelectric power before the model could begin

They conserved funds using recycled materials and utilized the 3-D printer to make trolleys and large billboard that stood in their public space as a community platform for graffiti.” For the competition, the Sayville S.T.E.M. students had been required to submit their prepared essay and give a presentation to explain their solutions and services in detail during an interview with the panel of judges who specialized in different aspects of city planning. “It was at this moment that East Lambston [the name the students chose for their city in honor of their adviser] revealed their undeniable chemistry as a team.” Mrs. Lambiase added. “The delivery of their vision was not a string of facts but a story of their Future City. This magnificent moment was shared by family and school representatives in the room as we watched our team ripen with pride and joy as their journey came to an end.” At the conclusion of the competition, the Sayville team was excited and honored to receive a special award for “Best Communication System” in their future city. The irony of winning for best communication had not gone unnoticed to all involved with the S.T.E.M. team, especially Mrs. Lambiase. Not only had the students overcome their team’s greatest weakness, it became their greatest strength for which they were recognized in the competition. Mrs. Lambiase was elated. “This was a magnificent evolution. Despite all the obstacles their camaraderie has grown. I cannot be more excited about what they have all learned in the process.” Honest and open communication, at least for this generation of Sayville S.T.E.M. students, may indeed prove to be a wonderful way to shape the world.

How will their generation shape the world? That was the question posed to the ten Sayville Middle School S.T.E.M. students who were among the students from twenty-seven regional schools attending the Future Cities Competition, a non-profit national competition sponsored by the engineering community to promote technological literacy and engineering. The annual competition was created to give middle school students a chance to share their solutions and ideas by addressing the future engineering challenges that might face cities and society. Sayville Middle School Science teacher Gabrielle Lambiase, Tech teacher Jeff Goodman, and the S.T.E.M. team reported at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning in January for the competition held in China Town. Even though they had to arrive quite early, everyone (the team leaders, team members, and their relatives who came along for moral support) showed tremendous commitment. For the Sayville team, the process of getting there had begun months before and the high spirits they brought that morning to the competition had been hard won. Science teacher and S.T.E.M. adviser Gabrielle Lambiase explained that after the idea to attend the competition was proposed in late September, the student-selection and planning began from scratch. Quickly she realized they had their work cut out for them. “From the start it was more than accepting the challenge. It was a lesson in teamwork.” Meeting them every day at lunch and after school, Mrs. Lambiase found most of her energies as their adviser was helping them get over their biggest hurdle - embracing communication - so they could learn the value of collaboration. As the team dynamics developed the students became comfortable sharing their ideas, listening to others and recognizing who had the most creativity and leadership skills that would benefit the team as a whole. It was a slow evolution at first; sometimes it

Prom Gown Collection Westy Self Storage continues its support for the 9th consecutive year of the Prom Boutique sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center. Westy Self Storage in East Northport is pleased to host this drive as a designated collection site for donations of new and gently-used prom gowns, bridesmaid dresses, special occasion dresses, shoes, handbags and costume jewelry. The collection will take place on Sunday, April 23rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Westy has also provided free storage space for the items collected and will assist in transporting them to the Prom Boutique. The Prom Boutique distributes all dresses and accessories free of charge to girls of families across Long Island who cannot easily absorb the expense of

a new gown to attend their prom, graduation, sweet sixteen or other significant occasion.
