PCLI Leads to Changes in Policy A year after the Press Club of Long Island published an unprecedented report card grading nearly 200 municipalities and agencies on their responsiveness to public records requests, some that scored poorly made improvements in how they handle Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests while others did not. The cumulative grade was a C in the project done by Timothy Bolger, editor in chief of the Long Island Press and PCLI’s Freedom of Information Committee
chair. “Suffolk County has reviewed software and is developing a FOIL request/ response process for all county departments to access and use,” said a spokesman for the county, which scored a C+. “In addition, the county implemented a search query on the home page of its website in an effort to allow for easier navigation of the site and easier access to FOIL forms.” In Nassau, which got a D+, Norma Gonsalvez, then presiding officer of
the county legislature, led a review of the report card’s findings. The panel made one change as a result: “We added the link to the FOIL request to the sidebar on the county website to make it easier to find/ access,” legislative aide Matthew Fernando said. Besides changes in policy, there has also been changes in personnel since last year. Republican Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, whose adminstration got an F in the report and is currently on trial for corruption
charges, was replaced by Democrat Laura Curran, who promised to do better than her predecessor. “The Curran administration promises transparency, including the FOIL process,” said Curran’s spokesman. “The system is already being reviewed and improved by the county attorney’s office.” On the village level, Roslyn Harbor passed new FOIL rules shortly after it got an F. Island Park publicly vowed to improve its complete lack

Easter Sunrise Worship Service The Long Island Council of Churches invites one and all to its annual Ecumenical Easter Dawn worship service at Jones Beach State Park on April 1st at 6:30 a.m. The service will be led by people from many denominations and people of all faiths are welcome. The preacher will be the Rev. Thomas W. Goodhue, a retired United Methodist clergyman and Executive
Director Emeritus of the Council. He also will tell a story to children (and the young at heart) from his collection “Sharing the Good News with Children,” published by Franciscan Media. Liturgical dancers from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cambria Heights, led by Carol Callendar, will perform. In addition, the Bethpage New Apostolic Church choir and the men’s choir
from Woodbury New Apostolic Church will both sing. Other worship leaders will include the Rev. Ron Garner, pastor of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, the Rev. Moira Ahearne from Community Presbyterian Church in Merrick and Yolanda Murray from the LICC’s Freeport office. The Council of Churches has been hosting this annual event for many
years. “It has grown steadily over the past fifteen years or so,” Goodhue notes, “drawing hundreds of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Easter celebrates something completely unexpected, Jesus being raised from the dead and God triumphing over injustice. This worship service always celebrates the Resurrection in some way that is fresh and new. This year we will have the
liturgical dancers from Cambria Heights for the first time and two choirs from the New Apostolic Church, the newest denomination to join the Council of Churches. I’m glad to be leading it one more time.” The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 6. This is just east of the East Bathhouse, which itself is east of the Wantagh
Parkway. Look for a large blue Long Island Council of Churches banner. The service will be brief (about half an hour) and fairly informal. Dress warmly and bring a blanket or beach chair. Donations for the LICC’s emergency food pantries and monetary contributions for the pantries will be gladly received.
Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the
children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve
children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during
the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free taxfiling help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer
questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season.

Renowned tenor Vincent Ricciardi has performed on countless stages throughout the world in the years since he graduated from high school, but he always thinks of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) stage as home. He, along with dozens of other alumni, will come back home on April 20th for the LIHSA Scholarship Gala. The gala is a memorable evening of spectacular performances, all to raise money for the LIHSA scholarship fund. “I will always support the Long Island High School for the Arts. It’s necessary for kids like me that need a place to perform and learn a craft that they love,” said Mr. Ricciardi, a concert artist who specializes in Opera, Jazz, Broadway and Opera/pop crossover favorites. The LIHSA Class of 2000 Theatre alumnus grew up in Deer Park. The annual event is an
opportunity for alumni and faculty to perform together and to share a variety of talents that they honed while attending LIHSA, including dancing, singing and acting. Visual artists will have their work on display and for sale in the school’s art gallery. The gala features an eclectic range of performances, from opera and guitar solos to sketch comedy and modern dance. Alumni are always excited to participate and give back to a school that helped shape who they are today. “Attending the Long Island High School for the Arts entirely changed my life,” said Heather Conn, a professional dancer and student in the LIHSA Class of 2020. “This school and its people did so much for me, how could I not give whatever I can back to it? I carry LIHSA with me every day of my life, in who I am and what I do. LIHSA shaped me, not only as an
artist, but also as a human being.” Heather performs with the Orsano Dance Project, directed by LIHSA alumnus Phil Orsano and Nickerson-Rossi Dance. She has performed in such notable venues as Jacob’s Pillow and Radio City Music Hall. “Just being invited to share the stage with all of these talented artists who also went here is incredible,” said Sarah Sixt, an actor, writer, comedian and 2008 LIHSA Theatre alumna who grew up in Locust Valley and is now living in New York City. “This place has such a warm and inviting energy. Laundry room renovation ideas T o former apartment dwellers or those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a dedicated laundry area, even the smallest washer and dryer space can seem like a luxury. The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.
Employ vertical space
Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can fit into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.
Clean designs reduce clutter
Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. ardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.
the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.
Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.
Cultivation
Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants flourish throughout the growing season.

My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to fluctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.
Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,
local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Junior Iron Chef Seven students from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently competed against 10 other middle school teams at the Long Island Junior Iron Chef competition held at Whole Foods Market in Lake Grove. The team was required to create an original recipe that used local ingredients, could be prepared in a school cafeteria and was,
ultimately, healthy. The young chefs used their creative talents to devise the “Good Morning Breakfast Taco.” The students - Ava Catania, Stephanie Cortez, Nick Esteves, Gianna Infantolino, Christina Li, Dakota Ramos and Erich Reineking - are all currently part of the Chef Master’s Club at OBMS. During the competition,
the students were judged based on taste, presentation, creativity, use of local and USDA ingredients, healthy choices and cafeteria readiness. Let the Pies Fly Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently lined the walls of the school cafeteria as they eagerly awaited the opportunity to “pie” some faculty and staff members as part of the #LetThePiesFly4EB fundraiser initiative. The fundraiser,

Sachem Central School District’s Nokomis Elementary School fifthgrade students in Jennifer DeCarlo’s and Robyn Griecos’ class strengthened their writing skills by crafting creative stories as student journalists for the Kidsday program at Newsday. In its third year at Nokomis, the Kidsday program helps students take their writing to the next level as they apply their skills in a unique way. The
fifth-graders wrote reviews on movies, books and other various activities to be published in Kidsday, a section in Newsday written by kids for kids. As part of the program, students participated in three workshops led by Kidsday editor Pat Mullooly. During the workshops, students practiced generating ideas for stories, answering advice letters from other students and creating illustrations to accompany their stories. In addition
to the reviews, they conducted interviews and focused on writing articles about fun activities for the summer months that will be published in the summer edition of Kidsday this June. The Kidsday program creates a complementary connection to the fifthgrade English language arts curriculum, reinforcing skills such as narrative and opinion writing.
Grundy Goes for Gold Students were off to the races at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as third-graders throughout the building crafted their own miniature bobsleds, a STEAM project that was inspired by the recent winter Olympics. To begin the activity, student groups collectively brainstormed ideas as they drafted their designs prior
to construction. Supplied with toilet paper rolls, pipe cleaners, Popsicle sticks, straws, yarn and paper, they began to construct their creations by incorporating design elements that would improve their race performance. Each student group was allotted a 10-minute build time before the tournamentstyle races began. As important elements of

the activity, teachers emphasized cooperation, teamwork and problemsolving, and shared various fun facts about the Olympic games. As a timely connection to the classroom curriculum, the activity served as an introductory lesson to the physical science unit, which explores kinetic and potential energy.

The class plans to donate approximately 20 horseshoe shamrocks to the foundation, which sells them to raise additional funds and also presents them to individuals who raise significant sums of money. ICC’s welding students have created and donated horseshoe shamrocks to St. Baldrick’s for the last three years. Said Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar, “Channeling creativity through welding is a lot of fun, but doing so to contribute to a worthy cause is even better.”

Great American Cleanup As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, it is time to prepare for the national community enhancement and environmental improvement event known as the Great American Cleanup. The GAC is an initiative of Keep America Beautiful and it involves over 5 million volunteers from approximately 20,000 communities across the country. Keep Islip Clean, which is a not-for-profit affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is the local
sponsor for this national program. KIC supports thousands of volunteers throughout all hamlets of Islip Township during the GAC each year. These volunteers don gloves, safety vests and litter grabbers to improve their shared community. The goal is to remove litter and debris, clean shorelines and waterways, plant flowers and community gardens and increase recycling, all in public spaces. KIC strives to have

This is a problem, as research has shown that prolonged isolation can be as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day—and these negative health consequences of chronic isolation may be especially harmful for older adults. Here are some suggestions to combat the problem of social isolation and loneliness: • Nurture and strengthen existing relationships; invite people over for coffee or call them to suggest a trip to a museum or to see
a movie. • Schedule a time each day to call or visit someone. • Meet your neighbors. • Don’t let being a nondriver stop you from staying active. Find out about transportation options. • Use social media to stay in touch or write letters. • Stay physically active. • Take a class. • Revisit an old hobby. • Volunteer. • Visit a senior or community center to see what’s going on. • Check out faith-based organizations’ groups and events. Five Ways To Protect Your Vision (NAPSI)—Did you know that women are at greater risk for blindness and vision problems? The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic
conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs.
Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance
where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.
Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what
you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive.
