Fun at the Circus On March 1, the famous O-Town Circus Troupe presented its spectacular traveling big top show with assistance from the fifth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School. Principal John Delio
welcomed circus coaches Erin and Ray, who worked with all of the talented students during the course of the week. During their “training,” the circus stars learned the skills necessary to entertain the attendees, including clown work, juggling plate spinners, stilt walking and the
diabolo stick. The students enthusiastically participated in the program during the week, and were eager to display their new-found talents during an evening showcase for parents and friends.

How Do I Top That? After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?” Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there. Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people
confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time. It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot. It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations? So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own
expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler
so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that

Place Based Learning Fourth-and fifth-grade students from Cherokee Street Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by student teachers from Adelphi University in an effort to engage in and reinforce place-based education lessons. “The heart of placebased education is to extend students’
learning experiences beyond the classroom setting, expanding into the schoolyard and surrounding community,” said fourth-grade teacher Sandra Fantauzzi. Students who have participated in these place-based lessons have worked closely with Mrs. Fantauzzi to plant and care for a native-plant garden, monitor the migration
patterns of the school courtyard’s monarch butterfly population, and report the migration patterns and behaviors of bird populations through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeedWatch citizen-science project. Mrs. Fantauzzi, along with the Adelphi University student-teachers, are currently preparing to
present the benefits of a place-based education at an upcoming education conference, “Northern Lights: Illuminating Norwegian Culture, Environment and School
Connections” in Tromso, Norway. During this time, they will be visiting schools in Norway to see how the place-based education philosophy is being applied at the elementary and
secondary levels. Mrs. Fantauzzi plans to share her experience in Norway when she returns from her adventure.

Middle School Musicians Fifth-grade music students from the Sachem Central School District recently visited middle schools throughout the district to prepare for the transition to middle school music programs. The visits are an opportunity for students to become better acclimated to the experiences they will encounter while practicing and performing on the middle school level. Each year, elementary
school students across the district who participate in band, orchestra or chorus travel with their peers to the Sachem middle school they will attend. On this recent trip, the fifth-graders met with the music teachers they will learn from and gained key insight on things they may encounter as part of middle school music instruction. Districtwide Achievements The Connetquot Central School District recognized a number of staff and student accomplishments during the Feb. 26 board of education meeting. To begin the evening’s recognitions, the board of education was presented with a number of beautiful ceramic pieces of art courtesy of Connetquot High School students enrolled in Vincent Osmers ceramics class. A number of Connetquot High School student-musicians were congratulated for being invited to participate in this year’s New York State School Music Association’s All-State and All-National music festivals based on their musical talents and academic successes. The students were introduced and personally thanked by interim Director
of Fine Arts & Music George Rockwin for their accomplishments. Connetquot High School varsity boys swimming and diving team coach Alex Scichilone was presented with a token of appreciation for receiving the 2018 Ed & Alice Kropp Outstanding Coach in Suffolk County/Coach of the Year award due to his outstanding coaching tactics and abilities to motivate his team. Connetquot High School Class of 2019 valedictorian Dylan Macejko was recognized by the board of education for being named a News 12 Scholar Athlete as sponsored by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union based on his outstanding academic scores and unwavering commitment to swimming. As a News
12 Scholar Athlete, Dylan was featured on a personal News 12 segment, and has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of the Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The district hosted its annual Community Wellness Day this past January which promoted mindfulness practices and healthy lifestyle choices. Due to the vast efforts put forward by Director of Pupil Personnel Services Gail Santo and the Community Wellness Day Committee, the event proved to be highly successful. Both Ms. Santo and the Community Wellness Day Committee were presented with tokens of appreciation by the board of education for their efforts in making the day such a success.

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19.
In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!
Birthday Wishes relies heavily on donations of toys from generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations.
Students who have participated in these place-based lessons have worked closely with Mrs. Fantauzzi to plant and care for a native-plant garden, monitor the migration patterns of the school courtyard’s monarch butterfly population, and report the migration patterns and behaviors of bird populations through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeedWatch citizen-science project. Mrs. Fantauzzi, along with the Adelphi University student-teachers, are currently preparing to
present the benefits of a place-based education at an upcoming education conference, “Northern Lights: Illuminating Norwegian Culture, Environment and School Connections” in Tromso, Norway. During this time, they will be visiting schools in Norway to see how the place-based education philosophy is being applied at the elementary and secondary levels. Mrs. Fantauzzi plans to share her experience in Norway when she returns from her adventure.

They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one ever leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people.
